St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands... In the entire Caribbean, there is no equal. Fascinated by its magnificent natural splendour, conservationist Laurence S. Rockefeller bought about two-thirds of St. John's 21 square miles in 1956 and deeded them to the U.S. National Park Service.
Under the protective arms of the U.S. Park Service, St. John will forever remain a natural wonder of turquoise seas, mile after mile of white powder beaches, sparkling bays, hidden coves, and tropical forests.
St. John was formed by volcanic action, as were most of the islands in the Caribbean. It is about nine miles long and lies two miles east of St. Thomas, about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico, and 120 miles west of St. Martin. The main town on St. John is Cruz Bay, where most of the island's restaurants and shops are located. Ferries from St. Thomas and the British Virgin Islands dock at Cruz Bay.

Two thirds of St. John is the Virgin Islands National Park including the waters and coral reefs surrounding it. Some of the Caribbean's best snorkeling and scuba diving can be found in these waters. Underwater photography is also good here due to the clarity of the water. It is not unusual at one location to see dozens of brightly colored varieties of fish and coral, including 12" angel fish, 24" parrot fish. Elkhorn coral rises up to eight feet from the floor some with "antlers" extending over five feet wide. Sea turtles, octopus, and southern rays may also be seen.
Most of the good beaches on the island are on the north shore where strong winds are the least, allowing for good beach development from coral. The most famous is Trunk Bay where the Park Service has set up a marked snorkeling trail. Cinnamon Bay and Hawk's Nest Bay are also favorites. Of interest to many visitors is St. John's unofficial secluded clothing-optional area, Salomon Beach.

On the east end of the island is Coral Bay, the island's oldest town, which includes an excellent restaurant. Some good undersea creature-watching has been reported in this area. The south shore is mostly rugged terrain to the waterline, reflecting the island's volcanic origins. The center of St. John is a tropical forest with sugar mill ruins and petroglyphs (carvings by prehistoric dwellers on volcanic rocks around a breath-taking waterfall pool). A visitor's map of St. John shows the main roads and attractions.

Cruz Bay, St. John's quaint tiny sailing port, is a lovely five minute stroll from Suite St. John at Gallows Point. Here you can shop at elegant specialty stores, dine at restaurants featuring fine international cuisine, and enjoy entertaining evenings of reggae and calypso music.
A map provided free to all visitors shows most attractions in Cruz Bay.

AMENITIES:
ACTIVITIES: There are four modes of transportation on and around St. John: rental cars, walking, taxis, and boats. From Suite St. John at Gallows Point, all of Cruz Bay and the closest beach (Salomon Beach) are easily accessible on foot.

Most sailing, snorkeling, and other excursion trips start from the Cruz Bay or National Park dock. For an occasional day trip to the east side of St. John, a rental car is convenient. Use the major rental companies for best service. During the "shoulder" and low seasons (spring - fall) cars may be rented for a day rather than a week.

Taxis, which are basically pickup trucks with facing bench seats in the back with canopies are plentiful and reasonably prices. Getting to and from the beaches by taxi is dependable with rates being approximately $3.50 per person each way.

Motorized rubber dinghies may be rented at the waterfront in Cruz Bay for visits to beaches and off-shore diving and snorkeling sites. See the National Park Service (NPS) regulations about boats and beaches.
DINING/RESTARUANTS:
Type: Condo No. of Rooms: 8 Beach Location: Beach Front (Directly on Beach/Water Front)
