Holbox (hole-bowsh) is one of the best-kept secrets of the Northern Caribbean. Located at the eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, 100 ml/160km from Cancun. The Yucatan Peninsula is home to over 520 different species of birds of which 150 live in Holbox, some of which include: storks, flamingos, herons, ibis, cormorants, and pelicans. The exotic village of Holbox currently has a population of 600 and dates back 100 years - originally it was home to Spanish pirates who founded the town. Holbox is uncontaminated by mass tourism and the native Holboxenians wouldn't have it any other way. 
 
The governor was escorted home when he attempted to pave the streets a few years back - today they are still made of sand. The Island is 15 ml/24km in length and 2 ml/3.2 km wide. Holbox Island, is separated from the mainland on its southern border by the Yalahau Lagoon which spans over 6.8 ml/11 km. On your crossing the lagoon to the island, you can witness schools of dolphins, experience flying fish, as well as various game fish in their undisturbed natural surroundings.
