THE TURKS and CAICOS AT A GLANCE

This 192 square mile (landmass) British Dependent Territory comprises two island groups, the Turks and the Caicos, which are separated by the Columbus Passage and are situated at approximately 22 degrees longitude and 72 degrees latitude. Of the 40 islands and cays 8 are inhabited with a population estimated at 23,500. The capital, Cockburn Town, is situated on Grand Turk. Quietly awaiting your discovery this "Beautiful by Nature" jewel of a country is blessed with 230 miles of white sandy beaches, 170 miles of virgin barrier reef and 11 national parks, 11 nature reserves, four sanctuaries and seven areas of historical interest covering 270 square miles.

The principal airport is Providenciales International Airport (PLS)

BANKS
Barclays Bank, CIBC and Bank of Nova Scotia on Provo. Their ATM machines are only valid for local account holders.

CLIMATE
Typically winter 75 degrees F – 80 degrees F high/ 65 degrees F – 70 degrees F low and summer 90 degrees F – 95 degrees F high / 75 degrees F – 80 degrees F low. Humidity averages 35% and rainfall averages 21".

CURRENCY
The United States Dollar is legal tender.

CUSTOMS
Visitors may bring in duty free for their own consumption one carton of cigarettes or cigars and one bottle of alcohol. Firearms may not be imported without prior written permission from the Commissioner of Police. Controlled drugs, spear guns, Hawaiian slings and pornography are also illegal. Since there are no income or capital gains taxes, Government raises funds through import duties which normally range from 10% to 30%.

120 volts/60 cycles AC. U.S.A. standard.

IMMIGRATION
Visitors from USA and CANADA may enter without a passport, if they have an original birth certificate (or, a notarized copy) and a photo id (e.g. Driver's License). Visitors from other countries do require passports, but no visas are necessary except from countries of the former Eastern Bloc. They are advised to contact the nearest British Consulate Office. Please double check with the nearest British Consulate or the Department of Immigration at telephone: +1-649-946-2700 or +1-649-946-2939 or Fax: +1-649-946-2924. All visitors must hold a round trip ticket. Visitors are allowed to stay for 30 days, this is renewable once.

DEPARTURE TAX: $23 is levied on persons 12 years of age and older. 

MEDICAL FACILITIES
There are hospitals and clinics on Provo including one with a diving decompression chamber. There is a doctor on call 24 hours per day.

COMMUNICATIONS 
Cable and Wireless operates a totally digital network with worldwide direct dialing, fax, telex, toll free 1-800 access (charged at international rates), cellular and Internet services. Public phone booths require pre-paid phone cards. Guestroom phones have a dataport for portable computers and you can dial-up the Internet. We also have a public Internet computer kiosk. 

TIME ZONE
Eastern Standard Time. Daylight Savings Time from April-October. Just like Miami, New York or Toronto.
