The Placencia area is ideally located for those wishing to explore the coral reefs and palm covered cayes ( pronounced "keys") off of the coast, the rainforest and nature preserves inland, or the mysterious and intriguing Mayan ruins that lie hidden in the jungle. Snorkelers can swim the areas around the Laughing Bird Caye National Park, and French Louie Caye, a mangrove island that boasts a lovely coral reef and a resident chef who will serve up a home-cooked Belizean meal for the crowd. Scuba divers have a variety of options including "Shark Hole". This is an actual hole in the sea floor inhabited by sharks -- primarily docile nurse sharks.
