In Akumal...

Akumal offers a great atmosphere and water sports for individuals and families alike. Akumal Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. It's white limestone sand beach stays cool under foot even in mid summer with warm trade winds. You can enjoy windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkeling or just people watching; for those who want to relax.

You will find two grocery stores in town, Super Chomak and El Pueblito. Both offer a variety of goods for cooking or for stocking up your party supplies. A film development center, pharmacy, and gift shops are open daily in the Concha or square adjacent to the grocery stores.

Scuba Diving. Akumal has two full service dive facilities in the center of town. As you head toward the beach turn to the left (north) for the Original Akumal Shop....or to the right (south) find the Akumal Dive Center. Both dive facilities offer daily ocean diving and instruction.

As you go North...

Xpu-Ha is approximately 15 minutes north of Akumal and has a great beach and scuba diving. Aquanauts Dive Center offers daily ocean diving with professional service, specializing in small groups.

Puerto Aventuras, 20 minutes north, is a resort community with a 9-hole golf course, outdoor tennis courts, a marina, a marine museum, restaurants, and hotels. Deep-sea fishing trips are available. Swimming with the dolphins is available daily at "Dolphin Discovery".

X'caret is a bit farther up the road. Billed as "Nature's Sacred Paradise" it is much like a natural amusement park. It is a great place to spend a day, especially for families. Snorkeling, horseback riding, and swimming with the dolphins are but a few of the activities offered.

Playacar is just before Playa del Carmen. Playacar is a luxurious community with a delightful aviary for tropical birds, 18 hole golf course, club house and tennis facilities. Plaza Antigua in Playacar offers fine dining and shopping.

Playa Del Carmen is 35 minutes away from Akumal. Catch the ferries to Cozumel. Playa del Carmen offers great shopping for gifts, cigars and groceries. Some stores are closed for siesta around mid-day. Playa Del Carmen is a wonderful place for exciting nightlife. Restaurants of almost every nationality can now be found there. Medical facilities, banks and immigration are located here.

As you go South...

Xel-Ha is one of the most popular snorkeling spots on the coast. Modern facilities offer snorkeling gear, gift shops and restaurants. Swim with the Dolphins!

Tankah - Casa Cenote is one of the favorite restaurants in the area. Located 21 km. south from Akumal. The restaurant is located on a sandy beach with a picture postcard view of the sea. Behind the restaurant is Manatee Cenote; this fresh water lagoon offers a winding open water snorkeling route and a refreshing swim.

Tulum ruins, about 20 minutes from Akumal, known as "The Walled City." These are some of the most dramatic ruins of the Maya. Sitting right on a rocky bluff above the shoreline, the Tulum ruins have an incredible view of the turquoise Caribbean.

Coba is another impressive ruins site just 40 minutes west of Tulum. These jungle ruins have a pyramid over 100 feet high. A less traveled site, the ruins aren't manicured like Chichen Itza and Tulum and retain that jungle feel. Mornings are the coolest time to walk around.
