Hotel Cohiba - Playa del Carmen (Playa del Carmen)

The Hotel Cohiba management and personnel speak English and Italian as well as Spanish, and you'll find that any one of our warm and courteous staff will be able to assist you with all your needs.

We can help you organize diving excursions to the famous Playa del Carmen reefs, tours to the nearby Mayan Pyramids and Cozumel, golf, horseback riding, ticket reservations to the Xa-mán-Há Aviary or just give you the details of the latest happenings in and around the Playa.

Playa del Carmen is centrally located in the Mayan Riviera, therefore it will put you in the perfect position to start a journey to discover the Mayan history at Chichén Itzá, Tulum or Cobá or take in a ferry trip to the beautiful island of Cozumel or the resort town of Cancún.

The reminders of the great Mayan peoples are everywhere to be found in this region of Mexico, and no more so is this true than in the city of Chichén Itzá. Frequent buses make the 3 hours journey to this city, the center of one of the world's greatest and powerful civilizations. Dating back to 435, the city still has many magnificent pyramids and temples from these advanced peoples, some still nearly intact throughout the ages. The Castle, (or El Castillo in Spanish) at an imposing height of 24 meters has drawn scientists and archaeologists for centuries to marvel at these architectural wonders. With over 50 ancient builidings, temples and pyramids as well as thousands of artificats and impossibly green grassy fields, this setting will make you marvel at the great society that onced ruled these lands.

Equally fascinating, but on a smaller scale, there are the nearby cities of Tulum and Cobá. Each city is about an hour bus trip from the Playa. In Tulum, you will see the only Mayan city directly constructed on the sea and its' own imposing castle perched upon a hill overlooking the sea fronted by a beatiful sandy beach. Cobá, on the other hand is in the middle of the jungle. There you will find the highest pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula, Nohoch Mul which affords a fantastic view of Lake Ma Can Xoc to the east and of Lake Cobo to the southwest.

Hourly ferries make the 45 minute channel crossing to the island of Cozumel, arriving in the heart of the island's one town, where you can shop in duty-free stores, find dive shops or set out for an afternoon on the beach. Like Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is world reknown for the pristine beaches and fine diving, perfect for an unforgettable afternoon. It is also possible to catch a bus from Playa to the famous resort town of Cancún, whose spring break exploits have become famous over the years of partying college students. Even so, there are great beaches, golf and shopping to be done as well.

ACTIVITIES: Playa del Carmen is world famous for our pristine crystal blue waters, and stunning sun bleached sandy beaches. Whether you just want to soak up the sun, take a romantic walk along the shore, or let the children play in the calm surf, you won't find a more beautiful setting in our paradise of Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen is also famous for our shallow reefs and "cenotes" , perfect for the experienced diver. The reef breaks the waves heading to shore, which provides a perfect setting for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming among native tropical fish and sea life.
Never scuba dived before? Playa is a the place to learn! Introductory courses are taught by professionally licensed instructors. The basics are taught in a pool, then after a few lessons students are taken out with their instructors to explore the reef for a couple of hours to get a glimpse of the underwater world. Most dives, like the reefs, are relatively shallow (about 12-15 meters/40-50 feet) perfect for the beginner.

For cave certified divers, the Play region has many well known as well as "secret" cenotes, or underwater caves. Divers from all over the world flock to explore these crystal blue, freshwater canyons. If you are a certified scuba diver but not cave certified there are likewise several professional local operators who will take you on training excursions to explore this fascinating natural phenomenon. Even for those who do not dive, there are cenotes where you can just take a swim or come and view these wonders of Mother Nature that are located in only in this corner of Mexico.

During the afternoon siesta Playa is quiet, but as the sun sets the town is at its most festive and romantic. Street performers Fifth Avenue play guitars while singing Mexican folk songs, lovers walk hand in hand on the beachfront faces glowing in the soft orange and red rays of the setting sun. What more romantic way to spend an evening with the night sky overhead and gentle waves rolling in to shore. You might just find yourself falling in love all over again...
For the more lively crowd, taverns and bars come alive at sunset and Fifth Avenue becomes an international social club. You can mingle with the locals while enjoying a live band or make new friends from all over the world while sharing a refreshing cocktail. Asking if you live nearby seems unlikely in Playa.

Apart from a few beach-side cafés, Fifth Avenue is the town's restaurant row. With dozens of restaurants offering both traditional Mexican fare and International cuisine, numerous bars, pubs and and cafés, you will always be able to dine well with much variety or sit and relax with a famous authentic Margarita.
There are wide range of boutiques along Fifth Avenue which feature an eclectic mix of authentic handicrafts from all over Mexico and Guatemala. The diverse shops feature masks, embroidered or batik blouses, dresses, silver, shell and amber jewelry and much more. In addition there are designer outlets and other name brand stores and while the prices will be much lower than what you would find in the USA or Europe, the quality is the same if not better.

If golf is your game, the Playacar Club de Golf offers a spectacular par 72 championship course designed by world-renowned Robert Von Hagge which winds its way through the lush tropical jungle, around mystical cenotes, and next to ancient Mayan ruins. The course has a 148 slope rating, posing a challenge to even the most experienced golfer, yet with 4 sets of tees, is playable for all skill levels.

In Playa warm tropical days fade to cool afternoons, an excellent time to visit the Xa-mán-Há Aviary. The admission fee is a reasonable and it's well worth a visit. The aviary takes visitors into a tamed Yucatecan jungle to wander along trails in a natural botanical garden and plants are carefully labeled for amature horticulturalists to learn a little about the native habitat. Flamingos and other long-legged birds amble about in ponds and adventurous tropical birds occasionally venture onto the pedestrian paths giving visitors and up close and personal view of species found only in this region. Multi-colored parrots can be seen and heard in the trees and you'll be within ten feet of toucans. Nature enthusiasts will be delighted at the opportunity to view this natural wonder.
