They tried but...
Traveler Review By: KN from Las Vegas, Nevada
Date of Visit: August 2006
This was my first trip to the Cancun, Tulum Area. I researched quite a lot before settled for the Dreams in Tulum for much needed rest. The main reason I selected Dreams because of the rating and reading all the review from previous people that went there. All gave it 5 stars rating. In addition, it was close by the Tulum Ruin, which was about 2 miles away. You can walk from the resort to the ruin on the beach if you prefer. The resort is clean and well maintaince. However, it's in the middle of the jungle and there are lots of mosquitoes. They seems to attack at night the most. Every night, I stay up at least 1 hr to make sure I kill all the mosquitoes. The first night I squashed 10 of them. They came in when the cleaning crew open the door to make up the room. Plus, the water in the restroom is saltwater. So you will brush your teeth, and shower with SALTWATER. Make sure to bring your own bath towels. The one provides there looks quite used. They do provide beach towels so you don't have to bring any. One big disappointment was the beach. There are lots of seaweeds around the main beach. There are only a small area where it's comfortable to swim in the ocean. Make sure to bring beach shoes if you plan to swim. The other thing that bother us was the specialty restaurants. The Asian, French has only about 24 seats and most of the time you have to wait 20 minutes to an hour to eat. Otherwise the food is reasonable good. They do mean it when it's all inclusive. You can get as much drinks and food, even room service. They also have a small fridge in the room stocks with soft drinks , juices and beers. The employees are quite friendly and they try very hard to service you. We make some friends with people all over the world who was vacationing there. Most from US, some from Europe and they were all very friendly. One big tip: Exchange some money to peso if you plan to shop and take minivan around. At the airport it was $1 dollar=$10.90 Pesos.(You can exchange on your way out of to the taxi, shuttle area) At Playa De Carmen it was $10.50, the resort is $10.30 and at Tulum Ruin is $10.00 Pesos. One second big tip: If you plan to take the minivan (recommended) ask the driver first how much to take you to the desination, then pay him by pesos and you will save a little bit each time. It added up by the end of the trip if you travel often. We got cheated the first trip on the minivan, it was supposed to be 1 dollar from Dreams to the Ruins, but the driver got out and told us it was $2 per person. After that, we always ask first. With many people around he can't lied. Third big tip: If you travel to Playa De Carmen to shop, becareful of people hand out brochure and tell you they have bargain to cruises and parks. They all try to sell you time share and you have to spend at least 2 hrs to hear their sell pitch. Lucky for us, we read from another preview and got out of the sale pitch early on. I would be hesistant to stay here again.
