Horrible, horrible experience!!!!
Traveler Review By: Anonymous from Trinidad, Caribbean
Date of Visit: July 2007

Stayed here in 2004 and really enjoyed it. So after trying other hotels for the past two years, we decided to go back to Sandy Point. HUGE & HORRENDOUS MISTAKE!!!!!! This was the worst vacation I’ve ever had: from check-in to check-out. Upon check-in we were greeted by a receptionist with a really bad attitude (Ms. Bacchus) who informed us, rather disdainfully, that one of the apartments was still being cleaned (even though we checked-in over an hour later than their check-in time of 1pm). We were given two shoddy, run down apartments that could not accommodate all of us. I informed them that these were not the apartments that I'd reserved and was then told by the receptionist, who looked at me scornfully over her glasses, that there was nothing she could do, except advise me to check-out. Splendid idea!!! By this time it was already after 5pm and there were 9 of us, 4 of which were children and 1 teenager. What was I supposed to do at that late hour? We were all tired and hungry by then.
I thought that maybe we were being treated this way because she didn't think we were tourists, since we're from their sister isle, Trinidad, but while I was awaiting some sort of acceptable redress to my situation, I witnessed the same attitude being given to an American. His problem arose from the fact that his apartment was filthy and he had two very young children along with him and his wife. Again, I saw scorn in the receptionist's eyes when she said there was nothing she could or would do, and that the gentleman and his family should check out. He explained to her that this was his first trip (and I'm sure his last) to this island and he does not know his whereabouts. She couldn't care less apparently, because her explanation was, and I quote “That is Sandy Point, a bag of problems”. Imagine that!!! Anyway, her supervisor finally found two suitable apartments for me and family and because of her gentle mannerisms and kindly persuasion, we decided to stay. (By this time I'd located another hotel that could accommodate us, but had to call back and cancel).
The next day, we ventured to the larger of the two pools at the hotel. That same night, two family members had to be hospitalized for extreme vomiting and diarrhea. They thought it was something they'd eaten, but a couple of days later, when we ventured to the same pool, I along with the four kids had to be hospitalized with the same illness. When I returned from the hospital and informed a member of the hotel staff of what had happened, they just brushed it off nonchantly.
We were supposed to check out on the Tuesday, but because we were not scheduled to leave until the Wednesday morning @ 3:30 I explained my plight to the supervisor on the Monday, asking her if we would be able to keep one or both of the apartments and was told that she would have to check to see if they would be available for our further use.
On Tuesday morning I was informed that we would be able to use the larger of the two apartments, but would have to check out of the other by 11am. On so doing, when I went to give up the keys at that time, I enquired (and fully expected to) if I had to pay an additional charge for the further use of the apartment. To my pleasant surprise I was told that I did not have to do so, and I thought that was probably my compensation for the horrible check-in we had endured. The four adults had gotten an invite to eat some local dishes that same night, from a mini-mart owner where we'd patronized frequently during our stay in Tobago, so we attended, leaving the kids in the care of the very able teenager. About 10pm I received a call from her saying that there was a lady outside the apartment demanding that they vacate at once. We immediately went back to the hotel to find out what was going on, and was told by another Miss Attitude that we had to leave the premises at once. When I explained to her my earlier discussion with the office staff, she said that they were wrong to have not charged me extra for the continued use of the place and that we were to pay an additional amount of $1,000.00 for using the apartment for the next 5 hours. I felt that that was exorbitant, to say the least, and she apparently didn't like my disagreement with that so she told us we'd have to leave in no uncertain terms, despite the late hour and the fact that we had kids with us. Along came her husband Mr. Troy Small, (who said he's managing the place for his father), to whom I explained my predicament and pleaded with his better judgement to at least allow the teenager and the kids to stay, at which point Ms. Bacchus decided to argue that we could easily sneak back in to sleep. In the end, I paid app. $650.00 for the kids & teenager to spend the next couple hours, and the four of us were extended the kind courtesy of a place to sleep by the kindly gentleman who had invited us to the cook. Thanks to him, we actually got a little rest before leaving Tobago.
Needless to say I, neither my family, will ever set foot at Sandy Point Hotel ever again, and I strongly urge anyone contemplating doing so to reconsider. There are too many other lovely places to stay on that island, where the staff actually knows about Customer Service!!!
