A Local Perspective
Traveler Review By: Nella Gasteazoro from St. Vincent
Date of Visit: November 2006
The difference between this review and others is that I actually live in the Caribbean. I know exactly what to expect when visiting certain islands. St. Vincent, for the most part, is not known for its posh hotels but this one surely takes the cake for lousy service and unsanitary accomodations. We lived in Grenada and were moving to St. Vincent to work at the hospital, so we planned a trip last year to find a suitable apartment. I thought it might be nice to stay at a spa hotel for a little R&R but their 'spa' services only include massages. We had informed the hotel that we would be taking the last flight from Grenada and that we would be checking in rather late. Had we come ten minutes later, there wouldn't have been anyone to check us into our room! But it doesn't end there. We upgraded, after a bit of coaxing as the receptionist wanted to leave half an hour before her shift ended, and found dead cockroaches and pubic hair in our sheets. Of course by that point we couldn't change rooms so we spent a rather uncomfortable night. There wasn't any hot water but we assumed that they had solar panels and that it was just too late for a warm shower but when we awoke and there still wasn't any hot water, we called the front desk. They said that they were working on it but when we returned later that day and there still wasn't any hot water, we called again. They sent over a plumber who turned on our tap and tried to convince us that the semi-room temperature water was warm - another night of cold showers. Though we called five or six times during our stay about the water situation, nothing was ever done about it. The lousy service didn't end there. We went to the restaurant and were informed that we couldn't order a pizza because the kitchen closed in half an hour and it would take 40 minutes to make. That morning I had asked if I could borrow an iron and was told that they charged for the service so I could have my clothes ironed for me but I couldn't iron them myself. That would have been fine except that the maid had already come by to change the pubic hair infested sheets and since she had to physically take the clothes and it was too much trouble to send her back to grab my things, I would have to wait until the next day and wouldn't even get my clothes back the same day. What sort of logic is that! The icing on the cake was that every other room had hot water but ours. They never offered to give us another room and never even apologized for the substandard conditions. Overall, any of the other hotels in the area would have been better than Beachcombers.
