Taken advantage of
Traveler Review By: Anonymous from Wisconsin
Date of Visit: September 2006

The place was beautiful and the grounds lived up to its name, but the service was awful. We were told it was "semi-all inclusive" being breakfast and dinner was included, drinks at dinner included and bottled water available free of charge (could have been a misunderstanding between travel agent and hotel?) and travel to and from airport was $35.00 round trip. Here's what actually happened:
Water was $2.50 a bottle. It was available for purchase. They gave me ice and filtered water from the bar twice, then told me I had to buy water. Drinks were not included at anytime with exception of coffee and water at dinner and breakfast- although this could have been a misunderstanding between the travel agent and the resort. I asked for a glass of water at lunch and was told they didn't have glasses of water at lunch, but I could buy a bottle. The food was adequate at best. It appeared they offered two soups and two entrees and two desserts along with one salad, but 3 out of 4 times, the "second" soup was crossed out. They "ran out" of the deserts two nights, but were offered a dish of ice cream. At our purchased lunch when our food arrived cold, suddenly the English speaking waiters could no longer understand us. Finally they said they would take care of it "tomorrow", yet when pressed, they again didn't understand. We were never compensated for that. We had to continually ask for water at dinner and the waiters replied "yes, it is coming", however, they were always there to sell you soda. If a single rider took the shuttle, it was $100.00 round trip, and they couldn't calculate when a rider came with a group and left alone. I felt we were misled they were out to find ways to make you pay for things and in spite of it's beauty, I couldn't recommend it.

Re: Taken advantage of - by: Sandy T Harris
I just returned from Shangi La yesterday and could not disagree more with Taken Advantage of. Our stay was wonderful. We had a large 'free' bottle of water in the room each day. At dinner, we immediately received water along with refills without asking. There were 9 friends on this trip staying in 5 different rooms and the service and friendliness was unsurpassed. Breakfast was fantastic and we loved grilled shrimp for lunch. Waiters went out of their way to accommodate requests. Will recommend to anyone.

Re: Taken advantage of - by: Susan Yates
Just to add another point of view, we just got back from Shangri-la Caribe and also had a fantastic time. I think that there must have been mis-communication between the travel agent "Taken Advantage of" used and the hotel's policies. Water was in the room each day (a large bottle, for free) and water was also free at dinner. All other drinks (including water at breakfast and lunch) had to be bought. Since breakfast and lunch is at the restaurant in front of the ocean, maybe all water there is bottled and maybe that's why it has to be paid for? At any rate, any time our group had a special request or was in need of anything, the service was excellent. The beach, pools, food, drinks, decor, cleanliness, atmosphere, staff, service, security - all excellent! It's unfortunate that there was a misunderstanding of what "Taken Advantage of" was expecting versus what they experienced, since it seemed to keep them from being able to enjoy SO MUCH!
