What I liked:
- Resort and rooms are clean and well maintained. The site is beautifull.
- Food is good quality
- Staff is effective: no need to wait for drinks. This resort is heavy drinker’s paradise. Tequila is in free service at all bars … If you have troubles with the room staff will come in 5-10 min.
- If you are bored between 5PM-10PM go to the bar at the main lobby. Charly (bar man) will amaze you.
- Well located on Riviera Maya: you can organise your excursions without the expensive tour operators


What I didn’t like:
- Very noisy resort: On the beach the animation is on from 10AM to 5PM. Then you have the theatre from 9PM to 11PM. Finally Capitan Morgan will keep you awake until 3AM. However if you stay in building 1-2-3 you can avoid these annoyances.
- Limited choices in food. The buffet is very pasta and pizza oriented. I would have appreciated more meat and fish.
- Grill isn’t a grill but is a mini buffet .
- Excursions are outrageously expensive from the resort. Between 50 and 100$US.
- House wine taste some sort of unknown chemical. Bavaro tends to force its resorts to have the same shit of house wine. This is not the first Bavaro resort where we got this shit. I hate Bavaro for this.

Excursions:
- Very easy to get around from the hotel. Colletivos are running on the main highway every 5 min ! To Playa Carmen the cost is 10 pesos/pers. To Tulum/Xel-Ha the cost is 15 pesos/pers. Cancun cost 40 pesos/pers. Pay the driver when you get off.
- We preferred the Collectivos over the regular bus service because of their speed. Yes, these drivers are running at 120km/h all the time.
- Renting a car is waste of money and time. Collectivos go everywhere.
- If you want to have a guided tour, go to Playa Del Carmen. There are plenty of local agents. We got our tours with Odessy but there are other agencies too.
- For the Chichen-Itza tour we paid 40$US at Odysse, in the hotel the tour was 75$US with less visits !
- Xel-Ha is a beautifull place. Need an entire day to visit. At the Hotel, this tour cost 100$US !!!! We paid 50$US at the entrance. But you can get in for 25$US if you don’t take the all inclusive package. In that case you need to have your own diving staff. HAVE a wet suit!! The water gets cold after 2-3 hours …. Take a lot of bottled water …
- Yal-Kul is another interesting bay to visit at Akumal. Akumal is an average place. You have to walk 15 min to get the the bay. Take some bread for the fish … and bottled water for you.
- Tulum is different from Chichen-Itza. You have to visit both places. Try to get a guided tour at both places. We loved our tours.
- Playa del Carmen is great for shopping, long distance calls and buying tours.

As you see we didn’t spend a lot of time at Barcelo but we have appreciated the resort for its good localisation and service. I recommend this place.


I have seen several resorts in the area and I believe that Bavaro is the one that give you the most for your money.
