A Neat Place
Traveler Review By: Les Imboden from Tulsa, Oklahoma
Date of Visit: February 2003
First things first. If you are looking at Playa del Carmen, that probably means you have already decided to skip the glitz of Cancun and the isolation of Cozumel. If that is right, this may help you make a decision on a place to stay. If you are in the tattoo/piercing crowd and are traveling with a backpack, you’d best check on down 5th Street. If you are a junior executive on a get-away with the kids, you need to get clear out of town. But, if you can afford a few amenities while traveling within a budget, Hotel Quinto Sol may be a good choice for you. I am giving it an overall B+, based on normal US hotel expectations. More like an A- if you are using Mayan Riviera standards. THE GOOD - Staff: Management is Italian, office staff mainly Canadian. Your main contact will be with Natasha, who sets the tone for dealing with guests. She and those who work for her are quite service oriented. You need it, she will try to find it. It is a small hotel, and they have time to help each guest personally. A word of caution. Any arrangement that requires two locals to carry it off (like a Mayan ruins tour) has a flaw already built in. Be prepared for carefully arranged plans to fall through for lack of coordination. Double check all arrangements for transportation, tours, etc. - Facility: In a word, the place is cute. We had people who were not staying there ask us about it because of its looks. It is actually as good inside and out as it looks on the website. Beware, though. The size of rooms that are nominally the same varies considerably. We had one room with two double beds that was huge, and another at the same price with a single king size bed that was sort of dinky. If you’ve been in the tropics, you have seen places that ask you not to flush your toilet paper, but to put it in a trash can. If that is a deal breaker, don’t bother reading further. Also, it takes so long for hot water to reach the second floor that part of our group never knew there was hot water until the second day. - Location: If it’s your first time to Playa, you will have trouble guessing where to stay. As the hotel website says, it is located on Ave. 5, which is where all the tourist action is. From there, it is going to depend on what you prefer. The hotel is right on the north end of all the action. This gets you away from the noise of the crowd, but creates a bit of a walk to reach the opposite end of the main hotel/club/shopping district. We preferred it that way, but it would not be suitable for anyone who is not up to walking maybe a couple of miles in the course of a shopping frenzy. Until the new ferry dock is completed, you will be quite a walk from the ferry to Cozumel, although a taxi down there is only about $3. We so much preferred the quieter location that being a bit removed was no bother to us. The beach is a walk of a few blocks from almost all hotels in Playa, so in that regard this one is no worse than most others. I reckoned it to be about 5 city blocks away. You will pay a hefty premium to book an in-town hotel that is much closer to the water. - Price: We took two standard rooms for a week, with the room package that included two tours and airport shuttle service. We got a rate of $800 per room, less 12% for paying cash. From my perusal on the web, the price was quite good for the amenities we got. Naturally, the rate is less if you don’t want the tours and prefer to arrange your own airport transportation. THE BAD - Not much bad to report, outside the toilet paper thing and the slow hot water. Do be aware that here a continental breakfast is just coffee, juice, toast and jelly. It doesn’t add much to the value of a room to get that for free. The construction of the building is stucco, which looks great, but tends to help any noise (such as neighbors who stay up later than you) reverberate all over the place. If you turn in early and sleep lightly, bring ear plugs for sure. Being Italian, management has a tendency to push the several nearby Italian restaurants. They are fine, but we really wanted Mexican food. Luckily, it is everywhere, so you don’t need the staff’s help to find it. There is no elevator, so be prepared for the hike if you book above the first floor. We insisted on being at least one floor up, to avoid street noise. I doubt that made any difference, since it’s pretty quiet there, anyway.
