My husband and I and another couple stayed at the Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret for the week of Jan 25 to Feb 1st 2003. We are all in our mid to late twenties. We went through Funjet and they were great. Overall the place was OK but with some flaws, they only opened in July of 2002.

Positive: The resort was absolutely beautiful and clean, landscaped really nice with stone walk ways throughout, with lots of pools and pool space and chairs but the pool was very cold. If you want a tube at the pool, sign up early, they don't have many. The rooms were real nice, marble throughout room and whole hotel, hallways were all open. Every room had a balcony with 2 chairs and a small table. Beach is only a small inlet but with lots of chair space. Hammocks through pool and beach area. We drank and ate everything with no problem. They had water bottled in Mexico in our mini bar that we drank all week with no problem. That water and the sprite had a little of a funny taste but everything was fine. They say the refill the mini bar every other day but ours was filled every day. Most of the staff was real nice; they would all say hi and smile as you passed them but watch out for the golf carts, they really get going in them things. They also give you a free day at the neighboring Xcaret Park ($50 admission) that you can come and go as you please through out the day.

Negative: We arrived at 10:30 am on Saturday, when we arrived we went up to the desk and registered, the desk staff was very nice. We filled out the form and they gave us our bracelets to eat and they told us to come back at 3pm to get our rooms. We came from Cleveland and our flight was at 6am so we had been up since 1am in winter clothes. All we wanted to do was shower, change and rest but could not do that until 3pm. We did eat and get something to drink and there were plenty of comfortable couches but it was still a huge inconvenience to have to wait almost 5 hours to check in. Another thing that made me uncomfortable was we just left our luggage in the entrance, it was fine and there is a lot of other luggage there. I went and got into it several times; no one ever said anything to me.

The other big bad thing was the food situation. It said 11 restaurants and that was probably true but here is the breakdown. There were 5 specialty restaurants that you had to make reservations for and if you wanted to make them for that day it probably would be full so you had to make it for the next few days but only for 2 days ahead cause that is all they would let you. And you had to go to the desk across from the check in desk from 8am-2pm and there was usually a line and they only had dinner in those restaurants from 6pm to 10pm. Also they did not all know the same rules, one girl told us you had to go to the buffet restaurant every other night (which would mean you would not get all 5 restaurants in on a 7 day trip).
