You Can't Complain About Paradise!
Traveler Review By: Jenny And Alyn from England
Date of Visit: September 2003
My partner and I stayed at the OGFX from the 22nd Sept to the 6th Oct and thought it was absolutely wonderful. Don’t believe most of the negative reviews you read, these people got me convinced I would not enjoy any of my holiday but it turns out my expectations before I read the reviews were 200% exceeded. True the resort is large but I don’t ever remember walking for longer than five minutes. The shuttle buses are supposed to run every 15 mins or so but you will understand why they don’t ever meet these times when you get on. People get on and instead of letting the driver go about his planned route they demand they are taken where they want to go immediately. Then when the driver gets there more people want to get on and go back to where he just came from and nine times out of ten he is stuck going back and forth between the two locations. What’s the rush anyway??? If you don’t want to walk for five mins on holiday around beautiful grounds then perhaps you shouldn’t even take the flight to get there and stay in your own back garden! The food was wonderful, the breakfast buffet was the same each day BUT they had everything you can imagine having for breakfast. I think perhaps complaints about this were from people who stuck to the same type of breakfast every day??? Lunch at the beach is definitely better and has a lot more choice than the one above the pool bar which tends to be more of a fast food buffet. We went to all of the ‘a la carte’ restaurants and found them all to be delicious, order everything off the menus if your not sure which you would prefer! We weren’t that fond of the Mexican but we are not a fan of Mexican food so it was difficult to choose however we still enjoyed our meal and the service was impeccable. Getting reservations was not a problem but then the resort was not at full capacity. All the pools were great, the pool bar waiters were great fun and succeeded in getting us very drunk on every occasion whether we were in the mood or not! They will not serve alcoholic drinks to underage children so don’t do as we saw some parents do and lazily send their children to the bar for them. The entertainment staff were brilliant and tried their hardest to get people to join in without being pushy and they’ll take the time to come and talk to you. I’m glad children are not allowed in the sports bar or disco why people want to keep children up that late anyway is beyond me and maybe instead of leaving the children to amuse themselves by the pool how about spending time with them at the lobby or theatre bar instead??? Our room was gorgeous and so was the balcony. Don’t go on the balcony if your scared of creepy crawlies unless of course you think the hotel should go around killing them all??? We hardly saw any anyway they run fast and are more scared of you. Our minibar was re-stocked everyday with 2 beers, 4 waters and 4 soft drinks. If you want more beer or anything just ask the concierge at the front of each building she/he will be more than happy to help. We asked for more beer and got 12 more cans! These people are not psychic! Ask and you shall receive! Our room had a coffee machine unlike earlier posts so I’m assuming this is a new addition. Ask for extra sugars etc if you need them. We were only in our room to sleep and shower so did not sit around listening to other peoples conversations or activities in the next room, not that they could be heard anyway and we were in a corner room which is supposed to be the worst place for noise! We never had a problem with stomach bugs or ‘delhi’ belly but still lost weight through swimming and walking despite the amount that we ate! Our brochure said that only snorkling was included so we were aware of the lack of water sports. Scuba is available at extra cost. We knew the beach was not large but this did not bother us as it was so beautiful. We tried out the spa too had a swedish massage and an exfoliating scrub on our first day so we could have luscious skin and I would really recommend both, I found it to be fairly cheap too compared to the prices in the UK. Lots of people walking round with braided hair which I presumed they liked or it would be gone the next day! The only thing I have to complain about is actually to do with other guests! You may or may not be aware that topless sunbathing is not appreciated around pools in Mexico (its ok on beaches) But people seemed to totally disrespect these beliefs and do it anyway. Please have some courtesy! I found the music played to be a mix of American and European not strictly one genre although I think the sports bar could do with a couple more CD’s so if you want something else playing take it along! The best advice I can offer is to treat people how you would like to be treated in their position and you will find every part of your holiday will be as perfect as ours was. We can also recommend the following trips Chichen Itza, Tulum, Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Jungle Tour and Dolphin swimming in Cancun. If travelling with first choice take the Night Time trip to Cancun ‘through the decades’ it’s a must do!
