Myself, husband and 13year old son are fairly well travelled and as every family look forward and regard our holidays as precious,so when we arrived at the Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret after a 10hour flight from England we were shocked to be given a map and pointed in the direction of 'Block14'.
This was to be our 'home' for the next 2weeks and were a little disappointed at the fact it was a 10minute walk from reception! The balcony was stone and crawling with every jungle creature imaginable and the room was dark and basic. The mini-bar had 2soft drinks, 3 waters and a beer. This was only the start and we soon realised it was not 5star standard.
Booking a meal in one of the restaurants took forever. When you finally got to the front of the reservation queue, you were told at what time and which resturant you could eat.You were only allowed to book 4 in one go so have to go through the whole procedure again a few days later.
The pool shed rarely had towels and there is no pool-side drinks service. The pool bar closed at 6prompt but around 5.15 your drinks were tipped into plastic cups and the music turned off as a little mexican collected the portable walkman to take it to one of the restaurants. Cocktails cannot be served after 5pm at the pool-side either as the blender is taken away cause it is needed at the evening bar! The evening bar closed at 10.30 prompt also as did the entertainment.Again 30minutes before your drinks were transferred into plastic cups! You then had the choice of the sports bar which was freezing cold and noisy, the disco or the lobby bar. I have never spent so much time in reception while on holiday, but beware, if a group of more than 3 order tequila slammers here, you are asked to drink it from the bottle as they dont have enough glasses!
Laundry takes 2days as the reception cant decide whether there is a service on Sunday or not.
The beach is small and man-made with NO water sports and my 13yr old spent his evenings sitting around the pool as he wasnt allowed in the disco or sports bar.
The holiday has been an expensive experience. The only positive being we met some great friends as you couldnt help but laugh together. If you enjoy walking, jungle creatures and want to lose weight with a tummy bug(which most everyone had a some time) then go to the GRAN FLAMENCO. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
