The trip up into the Blue Mountains by 4 wheel drive Land Rover is not for the faint hearted, but wow, is it worth it. I got to stay in a house built in 1776 in the middle of some of the loveliest mountains I've ever seen -- and I've been to Switzerland, the Himalayas, etc. It's not that they're so tall -- but the scenery is BOTH tropical and mountainous. Surreal. The owner of Whitfield Hall, Mr. Allgrove, knows everything there is to know about plants (and coffee, which they grow) and he's more than happy to tell you about the flowers, the birds, etc.

The accomodations aren't fancy. By fancy, I meant no Frette sheets with Leonidas chocolates or room service. It's a farmhouse that functions as a guesthouse. For luxury in the moutains, I'd try Strawberry Hill or some other beautiful resort. This place is simpler and A LOT cheaper -- I slept in the cottage, which is a two bedroom, one bath cottage with a small porch. I also spent time in the main house in front of the fireplace. I spent about $15 a night (per person) and enjoyed myself immensely.
