NOT Recommended
Traveler Review By: Ricardo Ramirez de A. from Houston, Texas
Date of Visit: June 2006
We rented Villa de Palmas for 10 days in late June 2006. The following is our impression and recommendation to other travelers. While Villa de Palmas is an impressive property, we would NOT recommend this rental to other travelers. The basic reason is very poor upkeep. This property clearly must have been a nice rental after opening several years ago. Now, however, it shows lack of care by the owner and staff.
We arrived to find a very poorly cleaned home, especially the kitchen. My wife had to spend several hours cleaning before it was ready for use. A number of things were missing or broken, such as the blender, light bulbs were burned, towels haven’t been replaced in years, and linens appeared unwashed from prior use. The washer and dryer did NOT work, so we were forced to go without washing clothes. One of two cooking gas tanks was empty. The A/C control in the second room did not work. On the second day we woke to a crew of workers pouring cement in our driveway, and had to ask them to come back later. They came back later in the week even though we asked to come after our departure. On the fourth day we ran out of water. Upon talking to the owner it became apparent the house cistern was empty, and the villa depended on a complicated arrangement of pipes and valves to get water from an adjoining villa. An backup water well was not in service.
The beach and grounds are nice, but poorly kept. There are no outside amenities such as beach chairs, grill, etc., other than those left by previous guests. These are haphazardly piled outside and many are broken and just basically discarded.
The TV/entertainment center consists of a simple TV and an impossible-to-figure-out, outdated VHS/DVD surround sound system. The owner, Mr. Bruce Palmer was very nice to arrange for adding the World Cup channel to the Direct TV box serving the house.
Early on our ninth day we had water problems again. The water completely ran out and after a full day of trying to fix it, we were forced to leave the house for a hotel. We had to throw away a considerable amount of food and drink from the refrigerator, and take all our dirty laundry with us. The owner indicated over the phone that he would refund two nights stay for all the inconveniences. A full 30 days after our arrival back in the USA, we received a check for only one night refund and Mr. Palmer apparently chose to ignore a telephone message and various emails trying to clarify this situation.
There are a large number of nice beach rentals in Eleuthera. We recommend finding one that has an involved owner, to guarantee a hassle-free experience. A nice house in a nice location is not enough, as we found out at Villa de Palmas.
