Idyllic and Beautiful
Traveler Review By: Sonia from New Jersey
Date of Visit: August 2006
We enjoyed Jungle Bay enormously; it certainly exceeded our expectations for service and scenery. Jungle Bay is beautifully and naturally wooded, the cottages are comfortably and tastefully furnished and the view from our oceanview cottage was so lovely, day and night.
The staff are perhaps the best part of the deal; they ALL knew our names by the end of the first day and whenever we encountered them during our stay they addressed us by name; I was impressed. They are the most accommodating service providers that I have come across. We were there for four days and said good bye with hugs and kisses to everyone, the cook, the servers, the guides, and the interns. They were warm and helpful and made the stay very special.
Jungle bay serves fruit juices from island fruit, guava, tamarind, coconut water, grapefruit, passion fruit etc., and the juices are delicious. There was always a vegetarian option at dinner and the appetizers were unfailingly outstanding. Joanne, the chef, is warm and welcoming and very polite. Every meal is fresh and made to order. I ate heartily because there were over a hundred steps to our cottage and we got more exercise than we normally would on vacation just by going about our business. There is a gym but unless you are in training for something you won’t need it.
If you are fit and/or energetic, the tours are good value for money. You get to see the island and hear about its history. Moses our guide was well informed and resourceful as he led us on river walks, hikes, to the falls, the Saturday morning market, the botanical gardens and the boiling spring, all beautiful, all impressive.
I did not do Yoga but there are classes every morning; I did get my half hour spa treatment every day.
You should be prepared for the ride from the airport to Jungle Bay; it is an hour and a half up down, round and round. The island is mountainous and the roads are curvy; if you get car sick sit in the front of the van. Expect to encounter lizards as you walk around the premises. They show no interest in humans but take some getting used to if you are not familiar with them. You will need flexible climbing shoes to be most comfortable on the tours.
You are going to LOVE the shower.
