No peace, no serenity, no calm
Traveler Review By: janicii from york, maine
Date of Visit: March 2007
One of the worst vacation experiences I’ve been through; what was a beautifully-appointed hotel has been ruined by the two construction projects directly next door. Oceanview has been minimized by half, and the noise is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.
Noise/construction: The biggie. Our first two days at de los Suenos were Sat/Sun, so there wasn’t work/noise going on next door. Still, the advertised (online) hotel pictures aren’t what the resort looks like; anywhere poolside directly faces the construction. No way to avoid it if you want to use pool or grounds. 7:30am Monday awakened by construction sites’ set-up next door; by 8am a crew of 15 workers had a stereo cranked with music and were using every method of power tool to begin their day. Ear-screeching sounds didn’t stop until 5:30pm everyday.
Main reason to splurge (at $350/night!) was advertised “peace,” “tranquility,” and “comfort” supposedly offered. This couldn't have been more misleading, as one had to basically leave the resort all day to not be treated to mind-numbing noise. Even in our room with the doors closed and a/c running the noise was piercing. Management, after admitting “Yes, the noise is terrible, no? Many say this,” suggested that we could just “enjoy the resort in the evening” – for $350 a night we’re supposed to leave the place all day and only sleep there?!
These construction projects didn’t just begin the day before we got there – they’ve been going on for months. Better if the resort just closed entirely during the construction, instead of continuing to book people into a place that they then suggest one leave for 10hrs/day. Roberto was nowhere to be found when we finally concluded that this was intolerable and we wanted to leave. For over a day we politely inquired if we could speak with someone in charge, and when we finally spoke with Roberto (by phone – probably not surprisingly, none of the owners live on-site) he also admitted that the noise and construction was “terrible.” When I asked what could be done to salvage our vacation he said that he could offer us 20% off of our stay! So, to stay at a place that is uninhabitable (by the owner’s admission) for most of the day, the best recompense offered was $280/night. Had we known the condition of the resort’s location, we wouldn’t have stayed there, even at $100/night! We packed our bags, paid our bill (at $280/night – Roberto would not budge on anything else in good faith), and left. We have traveled all over Mexico, staying at everything from cabanas on the beach to luxury resorts, and are not ethnocentric American travelers who expect America in another country. Nevertheless, we’ve never been treated to such false and misleading advertising as what we experienced at Casa de los Suenos– the “peaceful environment” and “nature sounds” that were promised for $350/night were not even close.
