We actually just returned from Journey's End in March 2004, not 2003, but this year wasn't an option above. The resort is nicely situated between the ocean and a mangrove lagoon. However, the constant trade winds from the east made it uncomfortable to sit on the beach at times. The ocean is protected by the barrier reef and the water is full of seagrass (and enormous amounts of trash once you walk along the beach off the property) and isn't too appealing to swim in. The seas were too rough outside the reef to allow for diving five out of our seven day stay. From what I hear, fishermen had the same problem. It was a little inconvenient to get to town, which is why we purchased the meal plan. However, seven days at the same restaurant can get boring. Breakfast and lunches were good. Dinners ranged from just edible to good, not excellent. Shrimps Ambergris was probably the best dinner choice. Although it was winter time, the resort was only about 35-40% full and the pool bar was not in service, which was a little disappointing. We had an ocean front cabana, which was small but nice; a few too many ants visiting us. I would recommend Bonaire over Ambergris Caye for diving any day. In Bonaire, it is easier to dive, the water is calmer and you have more shore dive sites that you could possibly visit in a week's stay (there is no shore diving on Ambergris). If I were to re-visit Belize, I would probably stay at a dedicated dive resort such as Lighthouse Reef on its own separate atoll or would stay closer to San Pedro town (walking distance) on Ambergris Caye or go to different part of the country altogether, such as Placencia.
