nice, but beware

The island itself is beautiful. The Rendezvous is on a beach that is one of the nicest, most picturesque beaches I’ve ever seen. The Resort is right in the middle of the 2 mile beach. There are 4 types of rooms there starting with the Garden view, Garden Cottages, Ocean View and Ocean cottages. We stayed in the Ocean view. Our room was literally steps from the beach. The 2 restaurants on the resort provided great food. The open terrace has the buffet and as buffets go, it is excellent with a good mix of Caribbean and British food. The Trystin restaurant (where you need reservations and can only visit 3 times a week) served al a cart and was also great food.
BUT, here are the negatives. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t have gone had I known these ahead of time, but I would have been better prepared.
The Ocean view rooms were musty, damp and smelly. Our bed the first night was very damp. We learned to roll our sheets down each day after the maid made the bed to air it out and put clean towels over our pillows so we could breathe rather than have our faces in the damp, musty pillows.
The draperies were made of a thick material and held the humid air all too well. They need to be replaced with shutters and the damp couches need to be replaced with rattan furniture or something.
All beaches in St Lucia are public and the locals are free to go where they please. Although the locals never talked to us directly, they were not afraid to show how rude, obnoxious and LOUD they could be. They really enjoyed the fact that their loudness and rudeness just might interfere with the peace and quiet of the ‘white tourists’ as they liked to call us. The weekends were the worst; especially Sunday’s when the beach was literally swarming with locals. In fact, we didn’t see a single tourist go in the water that afternoon as the locals took over the water front with their soccer games and destroying of a large piece of styro-foam that they tore into little bits and left all over the water front. They also enjoyed a game of getting wet and then rolling in the white sand and standing up and yelling, “look at me, the white tourist”, just what you want as you lie under a palm tree sucking a pina calada. The other negative was ‘some’ of the staff, especially the staff that served drinks on the beach. They did nothing to hide the fact that they resented us being there. I don’t know if it was because of their friends and families being on the beach, or what, but they sure didn’t get many tips. Tips of course are not needed according to the brochure, but good luck getting a smile without one.
Sounds like a negative review…but it was still a great holiday and the staff that were friendly were great…just be prepared for the negatives.
