The hotel property comprises a small share of the beach here - basically a couple of hundred feet of waterfront, shaped into hexagonal 'pits' filled with sand (which may not be real)and are there to prevent erosion. There is no actual beach - just a sandy ramp into the water. We found barbed wire, trash and construction debris here. The place suffered during Hurrican Wilma - no doubt about it! The owners, while friendly on a required level, didn't seem to be 'hotel service people' - more a group of family members operating a business. There was no functioning bar that we could see - and they said they could not find wine to go with the American plan evening meal. In short, the place lacked a holiday atmosphere. I would not recommend the American Plan anyway - there are restaurants close by, and the owner - I think - should make that clear when the booking is made. The town of West End is a mecca for backpackers, divers, college kids, beach bums and quite a few destitutes. People won't care that it's a ramshackle, down-at-heel, potholed dump anyway - they'll believe what they want to believe! But we didn't like four bucks a pop non-alcoholic pina coladas. By far the best place to eat is Richard's Vietnamese/Thai restaurant. Excellent atmosphere and food.

Sure it rained and howled for the six days we were there. Just our bad luck, but we have been to a lot of places in the Caribbean over the years, and this was way down the list. Sophisticated travellers beware - but if you're on a budget, and enjoy student-level accomodations and a derelict environment - be my guest!
