My wife and I just returned (Feb 24 2004) from a trip to Roatan where we stayed at AKR. Having read a couple of reviews, one of which was VERY negative we were somewhat apprehensive.

What a waste of energy that was. We were greeted at the airport on Roatan with smiles and welcoming hug. The staff was some of the best I have ever encountered. The food was delicious and elegant in an understated way and included conch chowder, coconut glazed grouper, calimari and the tenderest beef and pork I have enjoyed in some time. My only complaint was a bit too much salt (which I rarely use)

The accomodation was simple. Period. We stayed in the basic 20 x 20 hill standard room and will do so again if for no other reason than convenience (100 feet to the bar and dining room - no boat necessary). Our room had a small bathroom and a reasonable sleeping/living area that accomodated four during the inclemant day we had. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Central America where the building material of choice is raw mahogany. If you are looking for airconditioned rooms with cable TV, saunas, and room service: dont go to Roatan. The only problem encountered was one light that did not function and this was repaired the following day.

The diving and snorkelling were outstanding as was the entire dive operation.

Bring an extra hundred US$ for tips at the end of your stay. This is how people make their money and if you plan on returning you would not want to leave anybody out.

Car rentals in Roatan require a $1,000.00 deposit which they put on your card along with the rental then return when you bring the car back.

There are biting insects on Roatan (Central America again) so bring and wear bug juice with Deet at all times and stay away from the Mangrove swamps.

The beaches are not what you would expect if you had just come from Cancun. In Westend the beach is the main road once you get out of 'town'. Sunbathing is best done on your deck
