Years ago, I had read about the opportunity to rent your own island and kept it in the back of my mind for that very special occassion. When it came time for our 10th year wedding anniversary, I thought this would be perfect. So I booked the vacation... for September... 2001. Needless to say, with everything going on the week we were to fly out of NYC, we had to rethink our plans. The owner of the island could have very well insisted on some type of compensation to offset our cancellation, but instead insisted that we do whatever we felt comfortable with and graciously allowed us to reschedule for several months later.

When we did finally land, it was Nirvana. Total peace. Total quiet. Total freedom. It's not for the faint of heart - or more precisely those looking for excitement. This was hours watching the Gekkos roam, the surf splash and the sun set. We awoke to the sound of waves and slept to the sounds of crickets. The home was clean and well-kept and the owner met us there the first day to give us the tour. He left us alone completely, but was always reachable in case we needed help, which, as luck would have it, we did on one occassion. Let's just say that the ladies should rethink flushing feminine products. Us city folk don't know much about septic systems, but we learned quite quickly. Even as God-awful as that was, the owner came and cleaned everything up and never made us feel as badly about it, even though we felt horrible.

The only thing we had an issue with was the boat. We had some problems with it going into town, but we managed. We just never used it again after the first time. It might be a good idea to rent a bigger boat if you go.

All in all, it was fantabulous and one of the best vacations we ever had. The owners (brothers) are wonderful people and a pleasure to deal with. Price wise, it may be more than a traditional vacation, but this is definitely not your typical vacation and after you add in the cost of the outside activities usually incurred on other vacations and the money you can save by cooking in, it's not that bad. If you share with another couple, then it is even better. Word to the wise, the other two homes are very small. They might be best used just for sleeping and have everyone hang out in the main house. However, that means those staying in the main house should probably pay a little more since the accomodations cannot be equally split. Either way, a great time.
