Better than expected

Stayed here over New Year. The location is on the NE coast, so it is pretty breezy with the prevailing winds. The overall impression is that the place needs a bit of a makeover, but is by no means bad.
Our room, to illustrate this, was a bit 'tired' - for example, there was a large rust-stain where the enamel had become de-laminated around the plug-hole in the bath/shower, and one of the bed lamps didn't have a switch: one had to plug it in when needed. We had a fridge delivered (apparently they thought we'd asked for it, but we hadn't!) and it was exactly what you'd find in a bed-sit in a university town - you know the sort of thing I mean.
These minor niggles were compensated - totally compensated - by the unfailingly cheerful and good-natured staff, who went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable. The Manager (Paualo) was extremely welcoming and attentive. Unlike Liz's experience we found the food to be excellent throughout - particularly at the Pineapple Grill. Drinks are available all day, there is a coffee/tea machine by the main restaurant which you can just keep going to for refills and there's a little burger/hot dog stall which opens in the afternoon - and then again very late at night.
The New Year celebrations were very good indeed - a very comprehensive and varied buffet meal followed by a good-quality band and fireworks on the beach. I felt that the Resort did more than they actually needed to - which always leaves a good impression.
In short, a great place in need of some refurbishment - I've stayed at the St James' Club before, which is several rungs up the ladder, but I actually enjoyed this rather more - mainly because of the staff.
