Location Overview / Where is Bay Islands located?: Roatan, in the Bay Islands of Honduras, is a Western Caribbean island about 35 off the coast of Honduras in Central America. The Bay Islands are south of Belize and share the same reef system that runs from Cozumel all the way south to Roatan, Guanaja and Utila. Roatan was the setting for Fox-TV's "Temptation Island 3." Roatan is the largest of the three major Bay Islands. About 40,000 people live on the 40 square mile island, including the descendents of slaves and British colonials and Spanish families from Honduras.

Safety Tips Crime Information. Most visitors to the Caribbean have a relatively safe trip. However, thievery, purse snatching, and pick pocketing do happen, particularly in cities and at beaches. There has also been an increase in violent crimes, such as rape and assault against tourists. In some places, U.S. passports and identity documents are especially attractive to thieves. Robbery of yachts is a problem in some marinas.

Getting Around TACA offers domestic flights between Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba and Roatán. Isleña and Sosa airlines have flights between La Ceiba, the Bay Islands and towns in the Mosquitia region. There are frequent buses to most towns; the first bus usually leaves at the crack of dawn, the last late in the afternoon.

Taxes and Banking Roatan, Honduras has a sales tax of 12% to be applied to merchandise and services. There is an alcohol beverage and cigarette tax of 15%. There is a 4% tourism tax for tour related services. Property tax in Roatan is .25% of the recorded value of said property.
