Location Overview / Where is Bahamas located?: Caribbean, chain of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida, northeast of Cuba - 24 15 N, 76 00 W. Between the islands of Grand Bahama and Great Inagua are 23 inhabited islands and thousands of unpopulated cays (pronounced "keys"). Geographically The Bahamas are considered part of the Caribbean, however the archipelago that includes The Bahamas lies in the Atlantic Ocean, extending more than 650 miles from the eastern coast of Florida to the southeastern tip of Cuba. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the Great Bahama Bank and through the Island of Great Exuma. The Bahamas stretch Southeast off the Florida coast. The nearest island to the USA mainland is Bimini, approx. 50 miles off the coast of Florida. The rest of the islands stretch across 100,000 square miles of ocean, beginning at their northernmost point about 175 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida and winding nearly 750 miles to the southeast within 50 miles of Cuba and Hispaniola.

Camera Tips Always keep your film, tape, or computer disks out of the sun. Carry an extra supply of batteries, and be prepared to turn on your camera, camcorder, or laptop to prove to security personnel that the device is real. Always ask for hand inspection of film, which becomes clouded after successive exposures to airport X-ray machines, and keep videotapes and computer disks away from metal detectors.

Hyperbaric Chamber There is a hyperbaric chamber in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Air evacuation services are available on all islands that supply diving services. All Bahamas diving operators carry oxygen and emergency first aid supplies.
Internet There are a few Internet cafes on Grand Bahama Island and Nassau Island open seven days a week. Laptop connections are available, as are webcams and facilities for scanning and copying. The main ISP is BaTelNet (website: www.batelnet.bs).
Business Hours Store hours: Monday – Friday 9 am – 5:30 pm; Saturday 10 am – 5:30 pm. Many stores tend to close for lunch and most are closed on Sundays.
Restaurants: Most restaurants are open 7 days a week with varying hours.
Banking hours: 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 am-5:00 pm on Fridays.
