Bottle Creek Lodge....

My husband and I chose the Turks and Caicos for our honeymoon destination after reading much about the beauty and tranquility of the islands.
It did not disappoint! The island of North Caicos is beautiful in a dreamy, traditional Caribbean kind of way. And it’s a little adventure in itself getting there from Provo by tiny prop plane.
It’s a hot, easy-going place where the beaches are deserted, and the occasional local you meet is smiling and friendly. It was the perfect place to honeymoon, and twice we took a scooter and picnicked in front of the famed Three Marys Cay without another soul in site.
It was very windy our entire stay, so we weren’t able to snorkel or kayak as we would have liked, but we made the best of it.
We would certainly recommend the northern coast of this island (Whitby Beach area) to anyone looking for peace and relaxation in the quiet sun. We managed to find a few low-key restaurants in small resorts on this side of the island where the staff was willing to feed us. Conch fritters – yum!
Our stay on North Caicos was cut short by our rather unpleasant stay at Bottle Creek Lodge. We packed up three days ahead of schedule and went back to Provo to stay at Ocean Club West ( a very different experience).
Bottle Creek Lodge could, I suppose, be a pleasant enough place, but the proprietors are strange and quite unfriendly. It did not live up to the website, and the taxi ride from the airport (while very friendly) is, indeed, a rip-off. A sludgy defunct pond outside our ‘cottage’ emitted a faint sewage stench, and there was very little hot water.
During our stay, the proprietor told us he was looking to sell the establishment. Perhaps if the lodge changed hands it might become a more desirable place to stay.
Until then, we would not recommend Bottle Creek Lodge to anyone interested in staying on North Caicos.

Bottle Creek Debacle

The promised 'first night potluck' at this island B&B was more than we bargained for ... in a bad way. We were the only guests at this dinner where the proprietor, an ex-Navy Seal, decided to wave his bowie knife from the Vietnam War in my face to demonstrate how to kill versus how to maim people. This was unnerving.
The recommended transportation was a rip-off at $40 per ride (approx 5 miles). We had to rely on the proprietor for transportation to the beach which was about 10-12 miles away. He said he'd pick us up after heading for a drink nearby. He came to get us after two hours (we felt like high school students chaperoned by a knife-weilding, vengeful person). As he drove with beer in hand, the proprietor observed that was all the time one needed to spend at the beach (2 hours). He drove past another North Caicos charm, Flamingo Pond, noting that there was no interest in going there. Knowing that we'd pay an $80 round trip cab fair at best or that we'd have to continue to rely on the proprietor, we decided to salvage the rest of our vacation time and headed to Provo. On our last night we still had to rely on the proprietor for food becuase an $80 cab ride seemed absurd. Even though he knew he planned on keeping $390 for the two days we wouldn't be at their B&B he charged us $60 for dinner even though we brought salad, steamed brocoli and wine (hence my low rating for the dining experience).
Trying to communicate with the proprietors in advance of the trip was easy. Since we left, they've refused to return telephone calls we've made in an effort to receive a partial refund for the days that we did not spend at their facility. The only communciation was an e-mail after one week explaining that they do not refund for weather related concerns. Oddly, we relocated to a place with precisely the same weather.
Bottle Creek Lodge is quaint and charming (although the linens and towels could use updating); however, the strangeness of the proprietor makes this remote B&B seem isolated, inhospitable and somewhat scary. Not the way vacationers want to feel. The propietor related that a set of guests left the night before we arrived and we learned of another group who left from the cab driver. Such frequency of early departures is surely not a good sign; however, I can only attest to my experience.
If you're going to the quieter island of North Caicos, I suggest finding a different place to rest your head.(Please note that the reason for a '1' in terms of privacy/quietness is due to a sense of discomfort that results from being the only guests aside from the ever present proprietor.)
