Wonderful Vacation Spot
By: Mark / mjohn4330 from West Des Moines, IA
Date of Visit: May 2009
This was our third trip to the hotel region outside of Tulum. We had walked thru Copal on earlier trips and were not sure it would be a good place to stay. However this year the hotel and air prices were just right and we took a chance on Copal.
We loved every minute of our stay there. We had a partial sea-view room (#41) and it was in very good condition. The room was kept very clean and met all our needs. Bugs and critters were not a problem. Although the weather was hot, the sea breezes kept our room quite nice at night.
The beach was just great. Lots of room and lots of areas with shade if you wanted it. Plenty chairs and loungers. The beach bar was right at the beach and the waiters made regular rounds of the beach. We had nachos and guacamole, and a couple beers, every day on the beach. Regarding dress, or the lack thereof, it was about 50/50. And we very quickly got used to it. It's really not a big deal. Although it does feel good.
The main restaurant was great. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. We had breakfast there each morning and were very happy with the variety and the quality of the food. The Mexican breakfast in particular was so good that we had to repeat it. We tried a number of dishes in the evening for dinner. All were very tasty and well prepared. The fish was just stunning. We really wished they produced a recipe book.
Regarding the flu problem in Mexico, there hasn't yet been a single case reported in this area. Our next door neighbor came down with a case of heatstroke late one evening. We reported the problem to the front desk, and within 5-6 minutes paramedics showed up to help. She was fine in a couple days. We were pleasantly surprised with the quick medical attention. Other than that, everybody seemed happy and healthy.
We both tried the Swedish massage overlooking the ocean one afternoon. I was so relaxed at the end I could hardly stand up. Best massage I've ever had.
All in all, it was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable vacations we have ever taken. We are definitely planning on a return trip next year.

Not As Disappointed
By: Lisa Olsen from Salt Lake City, UT
Date of Visit: March 2004
I would like to add this addendum to my previous review entitled 'Disappointed'. Since I wrote that review, I received great concern and attention from the manager regarding our disappointments. She was able to explain most of the misunderstandings and we have reconsidered staying with them again. I received the professionalism that was lacking originally and greatly appreciated the attention our concerns were given.

Disappointed
By: Lisa Olsen from Salt Lake City
Date of Visit: March 2004
We reserved 5 cabanas at least 4 months ahead and when we arrived, we were told that not all of the cabanas were available due to repairs. One couple in our party had to stay in a property down the road. We later found that there were no repairs - they had given the cabana to another couple. The 2 shared-bathroom cabanas were presented as only sharing a bathroom with each other which was okay since we were travelling with family. We soon learned that the shared bathrooms were a row of about 6 stalls with flush toilets that anyone could use. The shared showers were 2 stalls with barely warm/cold water. We were also told we would receive $20 at the end of our stay. This never happened. They could use some professionalism at this facility.

A lovely experience
By: Kristin Browske from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
Date of Visit: February 2003
First, allow me to preface that my stay was in February 2004 (not 2003... which was the latest option above).
I recently returned from my first trip to southern Mexico. I spent three days in Merida and 4 days at Cabanas Copal, Tulum. As a relatively young female traveling alone, a number of factors can make or break an experience.
I found my stay at the Cabanas Copal to be the highlight of my vacation. The customer service was polite, helpful and accessible. The spa services were top notch (and I have well over 200 massages to compare to), the morning yoga was more than just a 'watch and copy' experience... the instructor described the positions as we progressed and a second person periodically walked around the room to help us achieve the balance and positions to the best of our individual abilities and always within the range of our comfort.
I found my partial sea-view room to be quite lovely... I awoke every morning to the sunrise over the water and showered under a conch-shell shower head. I slept under the mosquito net, although I never saw a biting insect during my stay... I suppose I slept under it more for the ambience. The candle-light at night was very relaxing... if you stay at Cabanas Copal, please remember that other guests may be resting and keep your flashlight use to a minimum. I found the candle-light on the paths to be more than adequate.
The food at the hotel restaurants all along the beach tend to be tourism-priced, but the quality was also uniformly good.
As far as activities go, I recommend renting a bicycle for a day and riding to the Tulum ruins at 0700 before it gets hot and crowded... I would also recommend riding out to a couple of the cenotes in the afternoon for a refreshing dip in the cool, fresh waters. If you have your scuba certification, DEFINITELY DIVE! The company that works on site is Dive Tulum. They were able to set up a very personalized experience including a start time that allowed me to wake, have yoga and breakfast in a very leisurely style. I found the dive master to be professional, highly skilled and fun to dive with. There are reefs all over the world and we have all dove them... it would be a crime to come to this magical area and not dive the cenote caverns. The dives are not deep, so you have plenty of time to look around... bring an underwater camera if you have access to one. You won't see sights like this anywhere else!
I travel a lot... and very rarely do I go to the same place twice (after all, it is a big planet!). However, I will certainly return to Cabanas Copal... and next time I will bring my friends as well.

Copal is Paradise
By: Kenster from Houston
Date of Visit: June 2002
I have spent a week at Cabanas Copal in June of the past two years and I will be returning to Copal In June of this year (2003). Copal is set on one of the most beautiful, secluded beaches in the Tulum area. Copal is staffed by a great group of folks who go out of their way to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The owners are on-site and are dedicated to customer service. Sometimes things go awry. I had some very minor problems during my first visit but Holly, who along with her husband Eduardo are the owners, was determined to make things right. I was so impressed that I returned the following year and I'll keep going as frequently as possible. As a veteran of 21 years in customer service, I recognize, and appreciate excellent service when I receive it. One of the other reviewers complained about a reservation problem. I know for a fact that Copal does not intentionally overbook, as many hotels do. The problem encountered by the 'anonymous' reviewer above was the result of a new employee who was not following procedure. The employee was terminated. 'Anonymous' has posted this same story on other message boards. She has also repeatedly ignored Holly's attempts to reconcile. Holly has responded to 'Anonymous' many times on other boards, yet 'Anonymous' continues to post these nasty messages. I understand that 'Anonymous' was disappointed when someone at Copal dropped the ball on her reservation. It was a tragedy that she missed out on what might have been the best vacation of her life. But, like I said, sometimes things go wrong in any business. The real test of customer service is how the company handles the problems that occur. Complaining and bad-mouthing a business without giving them a chance to fix the problem or make it up to the customer is the action of a very small person. What does 'Anonymous' have to lose by contacting Holly directly about the problem, even at this late date? Why would 'Anonymous' rather complain than get satisfaction? I have two lengthy reviews from my previous visits available if anyone is interested. E-mail me.

Beautiful beachfront getaway
By: Beth Newton from California
Date of Visit: March 2002
Thanks for an amazing getaway experience at Cabanas Copal! This was the best vacation we have had in years. We enjoyed the free morning yoga classes. They were such a great way to start out our day! Definitely try the temazcal, which is the sweat lodge ceremony they have a few times a week. It is the best! The restaurant is great. The food is excellent and the service is always good. Everyone was very friendly, even though we don´t speak any Spanish. Talk to the spa employees for the massages and facials that are offered. They are the best! We both had massages with Daniel and loved them. We have recommended this place to all of our friends and make sure to spread the word whenever we get the chance. We will definitely be back next year, and only wish it could be sooner. Thanks to everyone at Copal for making our stay so enjoyable.

Excellent Romantic Retreat
By: M. David Gupton from Lake Arroehead, California
Date of Visit: June 2002
Last June (2002), my wife and I had a most excellent, peaceful, and romantic 14 day vacation.
We had the great fortune to find an off the beaten path place to stay called the Cabanas Copal located in Tulume, Mexico. We had a little trouble finding the place only because we arrived late at night and were unfamilar with the area (this being our first time vacationing in Mexico and we were driving a rented car).
Once we arrived, we were greeted by a most pleasent man who checked us in, explained a few things and carried our bags to our very private cabana on a little bluff over looking the ocean.
The cabanas have no electricity and our guide lit candles for us, showed us the bathroom, stored our belongings, and left us with a smile on his face and a nice Buenas noches! This was a great beginning to what turned out to be the best vacation my wife and I had had in many years.
I wish I could tell all of you who read this every little detail of this fantastic experience, but I don't want to make you too jealous and I don't think I will be allowed the space. However, I will say that the service was great, the people friendly, helpful, and very courteous. We are returning to this fantastic place again this June 2003 for another 14 days of peaceful, romantic bliss!
Thanks again to all the great people who help make our stay at the Cabanas Copal (including the owners) a wonderful experience!
The Guptons

Cabanas Copal Experience
By: Anonymous from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date of Visit: February 2003
I made a reservation at Cabanas Copal three and one half months prior to arriving in February based on a web site which I now know is a fabrication. They charged my credit account for the deposit (1/2 of entire bill) at the time the reservation and the remaining portion 30 days prior to our arrival date.
Upon arriving at Cabanas Copal they spent two hours moving us from cabana to cabana, unfortunately they all already had guests staying in them. They were willing to pack up the other guest's belongings and move them, without the guest's consent.
Unfortunately, about an hour later they let us know that they had no available cabanas. We were then forced to go find other accommodations for NINE nights. Additionally, we now have to fight this through our credit card company, as we never stayed at Cabanas Copal.
This was not only happening to us, but other guests who were trying to get their room AND guests who were stating they had been to their cabana, BUT all of their stuff was gone. Which was our fear had they been able to find us a cabana.
Further, the cabanas are very squished together and the beach is small and quite rocky. This establishment is not a good representation of the accommodations available in the Tulum area.
