Beautiful surprise
By: Richard Hicks from Tyler, TX
Date of Visit: September 2007
I arrived late with no reservations and enjoyed a great evening and great hospitality. My biggest regret is that I did not arrive earlier in the day. This is definitely a place that I will return to.
I have traveled throughout this region for 10 years and watched this hotel being built. Was glad to experince a quality hotel after a difficult time distributing food to remote and Hurricane Dean affected villages near Bacalar, QR.

Most Incredible Experience
By: Mary Lind from Boulder, Colorado
Date of Visit: April 2007
I have never been so enthralled with the beauty, accomodations, service, and amenities as I have with what I experienced at Azul Blue. Each day began with a delicious breakfast in our fabulous room serviced by our own personal butler. Then we were off to Yoga, Pilates, and a swim followed by a spa treatment. We had the most exquisite meals that we even photographed them. Swims in the pool overlooking the water were accompanied by a refreshing offshore breeze and poolside drinks made to order. I don't know how to describe what I experienced at Azul Blue. The staff was incredible and each and every day was truly a slice of heaven. I recommend it to any and all for the time never to be forgotten or duplicated. Mary Lind

many problems at Azul Blue
By: Anonymous from Chicago, Il
Date of Visit: March 2007
The design of the hotel is flawed. It is supposed to be stress free, but the poor design and poor management combine to cause more stress than an airline trip. Our room on the second floor required us to climb a steep ramp and 35 stairs each time we returned to the room. The first floor rooms required a steep ramp and 15 steps.
Food presentation was good, but the food quality, preparation and selection would embarrass any motel six operator. Waiters could never get an order right. Room service waiters had to carry trays up the same 35 steps. There are no tables or chairs in the rooms for room service dining. We never (yes never) could get salt or peeper with any meal.
There is a good wine list. We tried to order numerous wine selections off the wine list - not one was ever available. House wine is not drinkable. Bar tenders are not trained. A vodka Gimlet never contains cranberry juice or ginger ale.
THERE IS NO BEACH. The pool looks great, but it is only three feet deep and is not swimable. Children are welcome, but there are no facilities for children's activities. The kids turned the gym at the spa into a playroom. Imagine getting a $200 (USD) spa treatment while the kids are screaming and yelling. It really did not matter because the spa therapists were totally untrained. The spa is on two levels and requires climbing a large flight of stairs to reach the treatment rooms.
There are 96 rooms and only 24 chairs at the pool. The advertised butler service consists of one "butler" for each villa with 18 rooms.
Each restaurant and bar hostess and waiter insisted on getting our names and room numbers at each visit. Sometimes several times during a meal.
An experienced management company with a reputation for fine facilities and service manages Azul Blue. It is a shame that they are not living up to their reputation.
