Not bad - facility needs upgrade

My wife and my two small children (3yr & 6yr)and myself stayed for three days on an all inclusive package. It was overall an enjoyable stay. Some of the staff were warm anf friendly others whilst not rude or abusive may have had personal issues which they brought to the workplace. The children loved the pool and we had to keep them busy until 9.30 am before they could use it. A feature that management should consider would be lights in the pool and earlier opening and a later closing hour. At 6.00 pm the place was still bright and the kids were disappointed to leave it. The room was cozy, the showers were old but functional. The A/c worked well no excessive noise. The TV (kids stations )were horrible could not see anything. The beach front is a reef so no bathing is possible its cozy though for a seaview and relaxation. the meals are not the greatest and fruit variety would be welcome. not much to say about lunch, was never there for it. Dinner was very basic, we expected a bit more variety however all meals were tasty and luke warm, not hot. Food warmers would solve this. Things that could transform this facility to truly a bargin hunters paradise would be an in house one stop shop for things like mosquito repellant, sun tan lotion, floats for kids ect. Also a Tour guide leaflet that the HOTEL recommends, There was a guided tour which i took from the facility which i am not sure was sanctioned by the hotel or not, but it was a total disaster, the front desk knows the individual and one of the other staff members recommended him. This tour was costly and 90% of it was seeing bush. and i had to pay for meals as well as entry to Pigen Point(We spent 45 Minutes there)The tour guide went to carry some one back to their hotel. The Tour did not even take us to Fort George or the unnamed grave, or to any other beach facility or to any waterfall or to the Gulf city mall in lowlands, seven hours of crap. Get this guy off your premises he will do no good for your image. On closing the hotel could do with a Paint job and proper lighting at the entrance. Other simple maintenance which a power washer could fix and a laundry service would be welcome. In spite of the negatives the ambience of the facilty is good and my family and i enjoyed our stay. This review is done with the intent that your facilty can truly become a sought after one.

My husband and I visited the tropikist resort in the month of october for our one year anniversary. After some searching we decided on this resort for our stay. I can't begin to explain how utterly disappointed we were just after a couple of minutes. when we got to the reservation desk we waited over two hours before given our rooms seeing that it wasn't ready.

These rooms were decrepit and very old fashion not to mention the condition of the bathroom and toilet. The rooms were hot and very clustered. The compound was very tarnished and aged, not to mention the state of the pool.

Staff members, inhospitable which made our stay even more intolerable... finally we decided to make the best out of it and get some dinner. There wasn't a variation of meals and drinks. The lunch menu was very revolting and absurd. It was either fries and fried chicken, fries and fired fish or burgers. I mean how can you expect people to eat that on an every day basis. Damn you'll get tired of the same meal all the time espacially for persons staying for weeks. breakfast is the worst. You can't even have a nice quiet breakfast in peace. You are always disturbed by some crows that are always hanging around the breakfast table waiting for you to just blink before they take of with your food. Breakfast is always cold and tasteless.

On there paplette it stated that there was going to be a disco and live entertainment, which we never experienced while there and which they never had. We were bored just after one night. The bar closed at 11:00 which was the only fun this resort offered. The hot tub wasn't even hot. It was just a horrific experience one which I'll never allow myself to have again. Take my advise.

When I told a friend I was going to stay at Tropikist he flipped and said i should cancel the reservation right away, by that time it was already too late cause my flight was a couple hours away. Anyway I got there expecting the worst after what my friend had told me. To my surprise it actually wasn;t that bad. Ok firstly when i got there. to check in, i had to wait close to an hour for the room to be ready cause no one had cleaned and prepared the room form my arrival. The room itself was average, clean but the bed is way too small, even for me, and i;m only 5'10'. Can;t speak for breakfast cause I didn;t even risk it. I opted to eat out. the pool was ok , not the cleanest tho and the Hot tub wasn;t hot at all. needs some scrubbing too. Check Out time is too early as well. Overall the hotel needs some major cleaning and upgrades done. In the end, i went to Tobago to see Tobago.. Not the hotel room. so my trip was a blast!

Horrible !!

To begin with, Tobago -the island- is a beautiful, unspoilt piece of paradise. Truly amazing and unique, the people fantastic and warm and friendly.

The tropikist hotel on the whole - an experience one would never forget. The rooms very crappy and shabby, this hotel needs a major overhaul and a change of management. The facilities are falling apart, the dressers horrible, outdated and falling apart, the bathrooms- in dire need of being upgraded. The outside of the hotel, really nice and well scaped, but the inside like a cancer!

The linens, are old and tattered and in need of changing, towels are not replaced as soon as removed, not to mention pool towels, this hotel has a policy if you're not first, god help you.

Breakfast is a comic affair, the restaurant on the whole is crappy to say teh least, in need of some major overhaul and brought up to standard. Lucnh is boring and tasteless. Dinner is a next joke, by far is the better of all meals, but always finishes first.

Don't even try complaining, as there is no manager. Yes that's right the hotel has no management team, no one running the show, the owner is a retired old guy, who curses loudly and hates to spend money. The staff says he abuses everyone and hence the reason there is no manager at this business. All in tobago would warn you against the Tropikist Hotel, it has a very bad reputation on the island, and the tourism people needs to look into the operations of this hotel, I personally believe it should not be in peration.

With reference to the reviews i have red on this page, We have been going to the tropikist for 13 years incorporating 30 trips, in the past they have had problems with clenliness, food, staff but we have found over the last four years things are getting consideribally better. food which is not on the menu may be available if requested we have certainly had no problems in that respect. Staff at the moment are absoloutely brilliant. I cannot understand why all these people complain when, if asked customers requirements are usually met with the upmost urgency.
If any requires any more information on the tropikist my email adress is alanhobson1@hotmail.com
We recently returned from the tropikist on the 26/01/05 after spending a further month there. Once again we were over the moon with the food, staff and management. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

My wife and I have just returned from a last-minute all-inclusive at the Tropikist Beach. Despite an excellent beachfront location, a generally good level of facilities, and a number of charming and obliging staff, it is quite one of the worst maintained and managed hotels it has ever been our misfortune to stay at. Evidence of a crude penny-pinching approach is overwhelming, from the dilapidated state of the rooms, the wretched plumbing (we reported our bath tap as not functioning on Day 2 and I dare say it still is'nt!), the poor choice and standard of food, the laughably poor level of service in restaurant and bar, to the column of ants that adopted the bathroom wall as a a dual carriageway! Management was not remotely 'hands-on', elicited not the slightest interest in its customers' well-being (or otherwise), and appeared solely motivated by considerations of the minimum expense and standards it could get away with. As my wife shrewdly observed, 'Not all the sharks in the Caribbean are to be found in the sea!'. If you don't want to be ripped off and picked clean, do not go there. This is a management that does not deserve to be in business.

My wife and I arrived at the Tropikist for a four-night stay in January of 2004, having reserved a deluxe room. We had just attended a friend’s wedding in Trinidad, and were set to relax in Tobago for a few days. Upon arrival, we were required to pay the entire amount for our full stay by credit card. In retrospect, this should have been the first clue that something was awry. However, we were eager to check in, and so agreed to have the four-night stay charged in advance.
The deluxe room itself seemed pleasant enough at first – spacious, with a king bed and a lovely view of the water. Regrettably, this was to be the only positive feature I can think of to point out when it came to our dreadful experience.
The front desk neglected to inform us when we checked in that there was no power in our room or the entire building we were in. Hence no electricity, no air conditioning, no toilet, no running water. To seek some relief from the heat, we went back to the front desk to get beach towels to go to the pool. We were curtly informed that towels were a “luxury item”, which seemed to mean that none were available. This, despite the fact that the literature in the room made it abundantly clear beach towels were available to all guests at any time.
Two hours later, we had our power and water back, only to discover that the toilet leaked. Unfortunately, this was only to be the first of many problems we were to have.
The room had a phone, but not one from which it was possible to make an outgoing call. (Try to figure that one out.)
Other couples we stayed with were even less fortunate. The superior and standard rooms were cramped and unpleasant. The wall-mounted air conditioning unit leaked onto one of the two double beds in their room, soaking it through. No cable was available, and no effort was made to fix it. One needed a degree in engineering to discern how to turn on the shower, which once mastered, had ridiculously low water pressure.
The hotel currency exchange rates could only be described as outrageous. The Canadian exchange rate that week at the nearby bank was 4.7 TT to the CDN dollar. The hotel was offering 3 TT to the dollar, or in other words, charging a sickening 57% premium. The US exchange was somewhat less severe, but a still a swindle nonetheless. The result was that after conversion with their rates, it was actually more expensive to stay at the Tropikist than it was for us to stay at the lovely Coco Reef down the road.
Trying to make the best of a bad situation, we went down to the restaurant for dinner. The entree we ordered consisted of an anemic fish with perhaps a few grams of meat on it at most. Amazingly, we were actually lucky to have eaten the pathetic meal—a larger group of about 15 we traveled with ate at the buffet, and half became quite ill the next day.
Exasperated, we felt we had no alternative but to leave after only one night of being there, along with two other discouraged couples. We got up early the next day and attempted to check out. Not only were we refused a refund for the three nights we hadn’t used, (after waiting a full 40 minutes while the clerk consulted with someone in the back room), we were also denied any type of itemized receipt detailing what we had paid for.
I am sorry to report that the front desk staff was exactly as several others have described in their own reviews: smug, arrogant, and rude to the point of utter absurdity.
After a few tears, a phone call to the credit card company, and a great deal of frustration, there was little we could do. We simply chose to go to another hotel, and absorb the cost that the Tropikist had bilked from us. Astonishingly, as we were leaving the hotel, our cab driver pointed out that he regularly hears similar complaints about the Tropikist, and that they frequently try to stick people with phone calls and charges they didn’t incur. (Which I found impressive, since we couldn’t even call out.)
It is absolutely incredible to me, even in a remote place like the Caribbean, that a business this unscrupulous could actually remain viable. I could elaborate at further length about our how bad our experience was at the Tropikist, but we discovered that someone had already stated it more eloquently by etching a few words into the drawer of the bedside table: “This is the worst hotel ever. Good luck here.”

Tropikist Hotel should read these reviews

I have just returned from a week's all-inclusive stay at the Tropikist and I must agree with the comments that I have read on the internet. Although clean, the hotel rooms are shabby with grey, stained linen and towels. Tablecloths and napkins were also stained and in need of replacement. We paid extra for a superior room which had broken furniture and hair dryer. Staff were not the most friendly I have met in the Carribean although the Manageress was very sweet. Food was edible but there was a very limited menu. By the end of the week, we went out to eat as we couldn't face being offered the same menu and the grey cauliflower served up one evening was a real turn off. Red and white wine were also a no-go because there were so rank; I will usually drink anything!

The most serious concern I have is over the safety regarding electrical equipment throughout the complex. Several external lights were broken and children's fingers could easily have probed into the broken fittings and received shocks. The socket for the hairdryer in our bathroom was also exposed. Broken glass was also left by the pool for some time before being cleared up. Please, if you are taking children to this hotel - be careful!

On the plus side, we did sleep well and our room was very quiet. It was probably because the bar closed at 11.pm.

Liz, Caversham.

We stayed at the Tropikist for a week. The room we stayed in was awful, in desperate need of refurbishment. Having looked at other rooms within the complex it seems that there is no consistency at all. All standard rooms are supposed to be equiped with a fridge, however ours was not. The shower rail was hanging off the wall, by the end of our stay it had been placed in the bottom of the cupboard, not repaired, resulting in a flooded room after each shower. The choice of food at the Tropikist was very limited and not very nice at all. The service on some occasions was ok, but we often waited 20 minutes at the bar, which was not busy, for drinks. There is no consistency with regards to quality of rooms or service provided. From the complex you can walk out onto the beach which would be lovely if not for the broken furniture and debris scattered around. The all inclusive plan was very restrictive, I wish we had researched beforehand!

We stayed at the Tropikist and found the owner and the booking clerk to be two of the rudest people we have had the misfortune to meet. During our stay and that of our friends who stayed the week after us, the towels were holey and unclean, the covers were never put on the beds and breakfast was so disorganised that it was a complete 2 hours of stress. When you check out of this hotel you have no bill given to you, so you cannot see what you are paying for and if you ask for one you get abuse. In fact if you ask for your telephone bill you wont get it at all, but will just have a demand for an amount and a threat to call the police. If you complain about anything they will swear at you. It wasn't just us either, while we were there other guests complained of the bad attitude shown by those behind reception. One guest was told he was stupid for bringing his beach towel back in the morning instead of the evening and was also told that people like him made the girl on reception sick. He had only stayed at this hotel about 7 times, but said this was the last.I have looked at other sites to see what others say of the Tropikist, to see if I just had an unusual experience and I see that my experience was quite normal by Tropikist standards. Shame that they can give Tobago a bad reputation as it is a beautiful island with wonderful people. Their reputation at the Troplikist is known among the locals, many spoke of other experiences people had had. Some had come to the hotel to visit freinds and had been shown rudeness and open hostility. I can only hope that others get to know of it too and dont make the same mistake we made and ruin their holiday. The hotel looks beautiful and is clean and well maintained but oh dear the directors are the rudest business people I have met in tourism and they allow their staff to be rude too. I run a holiday establishment, people come and stay at it from all over the world. I would be ashamed if anyone at my holiday accomodation had an experience like the ones I experienced or have read about.

Bad Experience

My husband and I stayed at the Tropikist Beach Hotel in January on an all-inclusive basis. After three days we were very disappointed with the service. Food was late, always cold and the quality was not good, tables were not cleared, it was impossible to get served at the bar as staff ignored you and breakfasts were a nightmare.

We complained and asked to be taken off all-inclusive. The hotel manager agreed and put us on the bed and breakfast option immediately. However, the owners did not take kindly to this and as a result we were sworn at, verbally abused, ripped off and kicked out by one of the Directors. We had to call the police for this abusive behaviour to stop. They refused to provide an itemised bill so we would know what we were charged for and as they had taken our money up front we had no alternative but to sign the refund slips and leave. However on calculating our charges after leaving we realised that they had charged us for 2˝ days all inclusive that we never had and 3.3% to refund our credit card.

If you stay at the Tropikist, complain at your peril. The reception staff at this hotel are trained to be rude and the Directors are very nasty. They ruined the first week of out holiday and seeing the obvious distress we were in they laughed in our face.
