An unpretentious paradise
By: Victor Nunnally from Asheville, North Carolina
Date of Visit: May 2005
Arthur Frommer stated in USA Today when he was asked what his favorite hotel in all the world was: 'In all the world Maho Bay Camps on St John is my favorite hotel for its ethereal setting and unpretentious clientele.'
He's right. At first Maho Bay Camps seems too rustic with its simple cabins that come with at least one ghecko lizard. But after settling in and jumping in that crystal clear water you realize all you need is right here. It's back to the basics and community. The guests are awesome and I feel that because there is no gratuity the staff are real instead of hustling you for money. The Pavilion Restaurant has the best food for the best prices. The watersports activities are plenty with sailing, scuba, night snorkeling, windsurfing, sunfishing, bone fishing....
It a very special place along with its sister resort on the south side of the island Estate Concordia, a smaller version of Maho.
Stairs is the novelty. The resort boasts hundreds and hundreds of stairs that wind their way along a 14 acre hillside. It is a maze of walkways and stairs that have names such as Mongoose Highway or Donkey Crossing.
A fun and invigorating place for all kinds.
www.maho.org is the website. They also have a cool workexchange program in the off season.
