RIU RIP OFF
By: Joel Kamins from Orlando, FL
Date of Visit: February 2010
My wife and I came to the Riu Palace Riviera Maya for our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived it was apparent that the elegance and luxury was all a facade. We checked in late afternoon and were told that our room was not ready yet. An hour later they finally gave us our room keys and sent us walking blindly through the giant maze of a property. When we found the room we could not have been more disappointed. We Booked a King suite. We got two full size beds pushed together in the middle, like some 1950’s TV show. We then returned to the front desk to straighten out the problem, and were told there was nothing that could be done. After returning to our room in dismay, the front desk had the nerve to call and ask if everything was alright with our room, or if they could do anything for us. We complained about the room, again, and we were told, again, there was nothing that could be done. What a kick in the nuts! Later, we went to the front desk and requested that some beers and a proper bottle of rum be sent to the room. The man at the desk said it would be done, as he wrote down the order and our room #. I waited, but the order never came. Two hours later there was a knock at the door. No drinks, just a woman asking if we needed more towels. I said “No”, and she asked if there was anything else she could do for us. So I said “Yes, we could use some beer and rum”. She said she could not do that. I was not surprised. WHY BOTHER ASKING IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HELP If you are looking for a relaxing, quiet getaway, then go somewhere else. After a long and expensive day of disappointment we decided to take it easy and watch some TV. All we did was watch, because we could not hear anything. All we could hear was the BOOM, BOOM, BOOM of the 1980’s dance music ringing from the courtyard. Thank God it was over by midnight. The collection of Michael Jackson songs made me want to throw myself over the balcony. At over $300 a night per person we expected more. Thanks for ruining our honeymoon Riu Palace Joel Kamins

Fabulous

Date of Visit: April 2007
My Husband and I just got back from our Vacation at the Riu Palace Riviera.
We had the most wonderful time. The service was great, the staff very friendly and the food was awesome. The beach was not so great but we did venture out a couple of days. The water was warm so can't complain. We travel a lot and this was one of our best vacations. Would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Just Returned From Riu Palce Riviera Maya Check out my photos!!!
By: LoonSong from Maine
Date of Visit: March 2007
Just returned from an awesome week at Riu Palace Riviera Maya and have spent a week editing several hundred photos. The weather was beautiful and the resort absolutely gorgeous and the food and service were great.
The beach was large and plentiful for the first two days of our stay but by day three the wind and surf had changed direction causing the beach to totally disappear overnight down to sandbags. According to people at the sailing signup hut - this is an ongoing problem and is totally at the mercy of the wind direction , when the wind comes in from the north east for several days straight, the beach erodes when the wind begins pushing the tides from the other direction the beach rebuilds itself.
The resort also lost it's boat launching area thus cancelling all catamaran and wind surfer use for the remainder of our stay. If you are a beach lover or a boating / sailing enthusiast, this is not the resort for you. At all times, the resort is cut off from any length of beach to walk on due to the sea walls of neighboring resorts running out into the water.
I'm including a link to my website which includes a photo of the beach after the erosion had occurred. Enjoy the photos at http://loonsong.smugmug.com/ and click on the Mayan Riviera Album.

DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE
By: Angie from Nebraska
Date of Visit: February 2006
Wow! What a beautiful place. We were treated like royalty to whole time. The resort was remarkable.
There were employees cleaning day and night. The food was very good and the waiters were exceptional. The location was good. It was a nice walk to Playa del Carmen, but after all we ate, we needed the walk!
The beach was spectacular and we even went parasailing. You could see for miles and we wished we would have taken our camera. We are ready to go back, but this time we would like to stay for 7 days instead of 4. We didn't have enough time to do everything we wanted.
