Very enjoyable stay...

My wife and I had 2 pleasant weeks there.
Location - Not the most picturesque of approaches. In fact we wondered where we had come to! But, once into reception our opinions changed.
Food - Buffet restaurant good, varied selection, but sometimes food was luke warm - need better heating. Soups, hot, meal in themselves, excellent!
Italian and Mexican restaurants good, but we preferred the buffet.
Room - Very comfortable, nice firm beds.
Entertainment - Very good. Staff worked v. hard. Caberet/International nights very professional. Round the pool, could be noisy with aerobics.
Foyer bar - Got a bit noisy in the evenings difficult to have a quiet drink. Well, it is all-inclusive..
Beach/pool area - Very good, beach v. good. Did get windy at times, difficult to find shelter. But still pleasant.
Staff - Very pleasant and helpful. Rarely found our drinks were late being delivered, but can happen when busy.
Room service - Tried one day, laid up with bad leg, vey good, prompt.
Cleanliness - Area was always tidy. However, wish guest would leave their used room meal crockery INSIDE their rooms, not leave them outside their door. Very unsavoury walking to your room at night with dirty dishes under your feet. Or maybe staff are rather lax in collecting them?
Amenities - My wife enjoyed the massages while I went diving. I realise the dive centre isn't part of the hotel but was convenient having it on the doorstep - or beach!
Trips - Good location for trips, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Xel Ha, Xcaret, etc.

This establishment sits on a windy section of beach a short walk from town. Hint, take this walk often – to get good, hot coffee at any of the many breakfast spots along the main drag - 5th Avenida, and to enjoy better food in better surroundings. The food in this hotel can be good – mostly it is the Mexican fare that is well prepared and flavorful. Much of the remaining menu items are mediocre at best. But the front line staff is quite friendly and the open-air café and its buffet-line service enable you to get food quickly – usually. You may find yourself in a long line for the omelets – made to order and very good – and you may also find they have run out of eggs, a problem for which no apologies are offered. This type of problem occurred frequently during our stay and points to management’s utter lack of understanding of hospitality.

Line up, take what you are given, ask for nothing and you too will be able to say good things about the place. If you arrive here expecting what the brochure promises, you will be sorely disappointed. The restaurants refuse service to more than approx. 30 people per evening, even though each can seat at least 40, and the odd hours and limited choices of the various food outlets make it difficult to obtain what you want at a given hour. Room service never answered the phone during my 8-day stay. The last evening, we placed an order with the front desk clerk and fully expected never to receive anything. Wanting a quesadilla but being told that was available only at the snack bar (which wasn’t open at the time), my daughter settled for a turkey sandwich that was to be delivered in 10 minutes. She received a ham sandwich twenty minutes later – an amazing accomplishment since we were certain nothing would arrive, such was our level of expectation by the end of the week.

One reviewer mentioned the hard beds. Check your room for insects as one of our group’s rooms was infested and unusable. If you are a light sleeper, the kitchen and its perpetually noisy air-conditioning equipment is a problem for many of the rooms on the north side of the hotel. But the most obnoxious noise is the blaring music from a centrally located loud-speaker at the pool that will be on most of the day, unless you complain in which case they will turn it down for awhile. The pool is not heated – no big deal; but neither is the hot tub – why it exists I cannot explain. Security staff is abundant but not all are in uniform and other staff is limited but all are genuinely friendly.

The bathroom lighting is dim, the toilets around the complex often do not flush and the water pressure and temperature can fluctuate wildly while you are showering. One afternoon there simply was no hot water. There is no Internet service as promised and advertised. If you are a beer drinker, there is one watery draft beer served. If you drink anything, watch carefully as your drink is poured. The small plastic cup in which it is served will likely be pulled straight from the dishwater, and the sudsy stuff will still be at the bottom of your cup.

Any one of these items would not compromise your pleasure. But all these things and more occurring during a brief 8-day stay is inexcusable. If you must stay here, plan day excursions to get away from it as much as possible. Better yet, stay somewhere else and put this poorly managed joint out of business. It’s a great location for a hotel and maybe someday someone will open one there.

The Reef Coco Beach far exceeded my expectations. A beautiful setting, beach is glorious. The resort is set off from others in the area providing a lengthy stretch of beach on which to run or walk without feeling crowded. The food was amazing. The facility was immaculate. The staff was always helpful and friendly. Be sure to look into this resort. Well worth the time.
