disappointment

The beaches were awful. We have stayed in Playa del Carmen before and never saw dead fish on the beach with fishermen's boats littering the beach area. It was hard to navigate around the boats to get into the water. Food selection was mediocre and not a lot of variety. When sending letters to the facility, none were ever answered. This is the second time I have posted a review and it has yet to make this page. Which leads me to believe you do not want people to have a very diverse opinion of your facility. It was nice to be close to town but I would take something further out like we did the last time because Viva Azteca had a much nicer beach area and better variety of food. And the timeshare people were relentless. They make you get ugly with them just to leave you alone. My idea of a vacation is no hassle and this part of going to a resort is just a nuisance and very distracting.

Returning in September 2003
By: Steve G from Springfield, Missouri USA
Date of Visit: September 2002
We spent 3 nights at the Gran Porto the first week of September. Most of the storms that came thru stayed inland. The water clarity off the beach at the hotel is poor but walk just North of the hotel and find the best beach in Playa. Walk two blocks West and you are on 5th ave, the main shopping district, which runs all the way to the ferry dock. The staff were friendly and helpful (this comes from someone who spent his younger years working in the tourism industry). If you plan on shopping, do so in the morning as there is not much of a cooling breeze in town. We are splitting our vacation this year between Cancun and Playa, but will be spending 4 nights at the Gran Porto!

Relaxed

Despite the variety of reviews I found Porto Real to be fantastic. The service, cleanliness and food were great. The Timeshare folks are an annoyance. I was hit with timeshare promises from the moment I got off the plane. Don't waste your time unless you are willing to give up lots of it and one timeshare place (not porto real) didn't even show up for the promised trip. Leave that aside. Enjoy the beach, water and occasional topless senorita and go all inclusive. Eat at their Italian restaurant, drink the cerveza, take some sight seeing trips. It looks like they take pretty good care of kids too. I would go back in a second and haven't quit thinking about it since I left. I hear to stay away in September due to hurricanes.

where is the beach
By: Mark from Rome, Italy
Date of Visit: January 2003
Porto Real was build on a very nice beach. it WAS a evry nice beach, because at present there is no beach anymore (if you don't consider 'beach' this trash that mixed with the sand washes itself in a very bad smelling water). People of Playa del Carmen hate Porto Real and desire that once it will be destroyed by an hurrycane!!
