Service and food terrible.

We stayed at Grand Occidental Xcaret in January of 2006 Ė loved it.
This January, 2008 we brought 11 of our friends. Now it has a different name: Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret. And with the name change there are a lot of changes in quality of service and quality of food.
Now itís not easy to make reservations in restaurants Ė everything is booked, but when we went to 3 restaurants it was half empty.

I booked Occidental through MLT for my family of 3 people and when we arrived we found out that the Travel agency had made a mistake and they got us a room for 2 people instead. I asked the staff of Occidental to show us the room for 3 people junior suit - itís almost the same room except 5 feet longer, beside 2 beds there was a couch. I asked how much we have to pay extra and they told me $35.00 more per person or $735.00 for a week stay.

I had to complain to customer service that we donít have CNN or Fox News channel working in our room, only Spanish channels, it took 3 days to resolve this. They told me that we need to move to a different room with working TV. And guess who did the moving - me.
The food they were serving at the buffet was almost the same every day. Last year we even had caviar one day. This year I was ashamed because I told so much about this resort to my friends

The resort was beautiful however; I did not find the overall service very good. There is a huge language barrier!!! The beds are super uncomfortable and the quality of the food was o.k. Stick to the speciality dining at night. Make sure to reserve all your dining immediatley upon your arrival. I did not like that you have to dine in a resaurant at each meal. No poolside, beachside dining available. It was a lot of work for a a vacation. The other issue I had was it is very hard to exchange your money. No onsite banking and the front desk would not change american money for smaller bills. The beach area was very nice and the snorkeling at the beach was beautiful!

One of the great things about all inclusives is the food. Not this time. I actually dreaded the thought of having to eat. no selection, poorly cooked...
I never had Mexican food made with tomato sauce.
Ever heard spices? The nature park next door was great and the food looked good there too. The bar pool was closed duing our visit too. egh....
Don't go there!

Beautiful Resort / Stupid Management

Our family of 5 just returned from the Xcaret for 10 days. The resort is beautiful. The restaurants were ok, the buffet actually ends up being the best. The pools and grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The staff very friendly. The beach is small but perfect if traveling with small children.

The only complaint I have is with the managemeent. Our 13 yr old son turned 13 the 2nd day we were there. My wife was booking an excursion and when she said he was 13, the rep had her go to the front desk to clear up a computer problem. Turns out that they charge an extra $47 / night for a 13yr old as opposed to a 12 yr old. That was the computer problem. I explained to the desk and then the manager that we booked this 3 months in advance, supplied everyone's birthdates, and produced everyone's passports at check in. He basically said "Tough, that's our policy", so we had to pay an additional $400. To add insult to injury, they messed up the Peso conversion and called my wife the next day to have her come to sign for an additional $6 / per night that we were "undercharged". It is so incredibly stupid for them to "piss-off" a guest who just spent $8,000 to be there on their 3rd day of the stay. I got over it and enjoyed the rest of the vacation, but I will never stay at another Occidental property again. It's a shame as the resort was beautiful and my wife and I had been talking about bringing a large group down for a renewal of wedding vows.

A stunning disappointment

My family was booked for a week at this hotel. We arrived at different times since we were coming for the wedding of one of my sons. The hotel mistakenly placed my other son and his family in the Royal suites, which had been booked for the honeymoon couple. When the staff was told of the mistake they tried to get us to pay more and keep the room, a classic bait and switch. When we refused, they moved my son and his family into the regular room that we had originally requested, never once apologizing. The promised crib didn't arrive until late in the day. When one of the kids got sick later in the week and we had to take him to our room, the staff at Le Buffet would not let the mother take food out to him. Against their policy, they said. We have since learned that a child drowned in one of the hotel pools a couple of years ago. I think there is a callous disregard for human life at this hotel. I would never return. Whenever we asked for help, there was no manager on duty. We never were allowed to speak to anyone in charge during the entire horrible week we spent there.

This resort get two thumbs up. I had a blast there. I actually went in 2004. Everytime you go on a trip there will be a chance to complain about something but if you make the best of every situation and relax since your on holidays then there should be no problems. The place is not perfect but it was in my opinion a fantastic time. The entertainment crew at the pool I give full credit to. They made the trip all worth it. Blanca, Alx, Gina, Dora, & Alberto & the rest of the gang.

Disappointing... wasted vacation

I came to this resort with high expectations, just wanting to rest my feet in the water on a nice beach.
The vacation ended up as a disappointment:
- The resort does not really have a beach, just a small creek on which they imported alot of white sand (the nice 'Beach' picture you see on all the internet sites is all you get). The rest of the coast is pretty much a reef. For those who like pools, the resort is OK.
- During the course of my trip, the Tour Operator which booked the rooms (and took my money) went bankrupt. The hotel management reaction to the news was appalling: as the tour operator had not payed the hotel, they actually (physically) kept the guests from leaving until we had forked over the dough. Ruined both my vacation and pocketbook.

On the bright side, the Xcaret park, right next to the hotel is great!! And the hotel staff (management excepted) is both cordial and friendly.

You Can't Complain About Paradise!

My partner and I stayed at the OGFX from the 22nd Sept to the 6th Oct and thought it was absolutely wonderful.
Donít believe most of the negative reviews you read, these people got me convinced I would not enjoy any of my holiday but it turns out my expectations before I read the reviews were 200% exceeded.
True the resort is large but I donít ever remember walking for longer than five minutes. The shuttle buses are supposed to run every 15 mins or so but you will understand why they donít ever meet these times when you get on. People get on and instead of letting the driver go about his planned route they demand they are taken where they want to go immediately. Then when the driver gets there more people want to get on and go back to where he just came from and nine times out of ten he is stuck going back and forth between the two locations. Whatís the rush anyway??? If you donít want to walk for five mins on holiday around beautiful grounds then perhaps you shouldnít even take the flight to get there and stay in your own back garden!
The food was wonderful, the breakfast buffet was the same each day BUT they had everything you can imagine having for breakfast. I think perhaps complaints about this were from people who stuck to the same type of breakfast every day???
Lunch at the beach is definitely better and has a lot more choice than the one above the pool bar which tends to be more of a fast food buffet.
We went to all of the Ďa la carteí restaurants and found them all to be delicious, order everything off the menus if your not sure which you would prefer! We werenít that fond of the Mexican but we are not a fan of Mexican food so it was difficult to choose however we still enjoyed our meal and the service was impeccable.
Getting reservations was not a problem but then the resort was not at full capacity.
All the pools were great, the pool bar waiters were great fun and succeeded in getting us very drunk on every occasion whether we were in the mood or not! They will not serve alcoholic drinks to underage children so donít do as we saw some parents do and lazily send their children to the bar for them.
The entertainment staff were brilliant and tried their hardest to get people to join in without being pushy and theyíll take the time to come and talk to you.
Iím glad children are not allowed in the sports bar or disco why people want to keep children up that late anyway is beyond me and maybe instead of leaving the children to amuse themselves by the pool how about spending time with them at the lobby or theatre bar instead???
Our room was gorgeous and so was the balcony. Donít go on the balcony if your scared of creepy crawlies unless of course you think the hotel should go around killing them all??? We hardly saw any anyway they run fast and are more scared of you. Our minibar was re-stocked everyday with 2 beers, 4 waters and 4 soft drinks. If you want more beer or anything just ask the concierge at the front of each building she/he will be more than happy to help. We asked for more beer and got 12 more cans! These people are not psychic! Ask and you shall receive!
Our room had a coffee machine unlike earlier posts so Iím assuming this is a new addition. Ask for extra sugars etc if you need them.
We were only in our room to sleep and shower so did not sit around listening to other peoples conversations or activities in the next room, not that they could be heard anyway and we were in a corner room which is supposed to be the worst place for noise!
We never had a problem with stomach bugs or Ďdelhií belly but still lost weight through swimming and walking despite the amount that we ate!
Our brochure said that only snorkling was included so we were aware of the lack of water sports. Scuba is available at extra cost. We knew the beach was not large but this did not bother us as it was so beautiful.
We tried out the spa too had a swedish massage and an exfoliating scrub on our first day so we could have luscious skin and I would really recommend both, I found it to be fairly cheap too compared to the prices in the UK.
Lots of people walking round with braided hair which I presumed they liked or it would be gone the next day!
The only thing I have to complain about is actually to do with other guests! You may or may not be aware that topless sunbathing is not appreciated around pools in Mexico (its ok on beaches) But people seemed to totally disrespect these beliefs and do it anyway. Please have some courtesy!
I found the music played to be a mix of American and European not strictly one genre although I think the sports bar could do with a couple more CDís so if you want something else playing take it along!
The best advice I can offer is to treat people how you would like to be treated in their position and you will find every part of your holiday will be as perfect as ours was.
We can also recommend the following trips Chichen Itza, Tulum, Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Jungle Tour and Dolphin swimming in Cancun. If travelling with first choice take the Night Time trip to Cancun Ďthrough the decadesí itís a must do!

Disappointment

Myself, husband and 13year old son are fairly well travelled and as every family look forward and regard our holidays as precious,so when we arrived at the Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret after a 10hour flight from England we were shocked to be given a map and pointed in the direction of 'Block14'.
This was to be our 'home' for the next 2weeks and were a little disappointed at the fact it was a 10minute walk from reception! The balcony was stone and crawling with every jungle creature imaginable and the room was dark and basic. The mini-bar had 2soft drinks, 3 waters and a beer. This was only the start and we soon realised it was not 5star standard.
Booking a meal in one of the restaurants took forever. When you finally got to the front of the reservation queue, you were told at what time and which resturant you could eat.You were only allowed to book 4 in one go so have to go through the whole procedure again a few days later.
The pool shed rarely had towels and there is no pool-side drinks service. The pool bar closed at 6prompt but around 5.15 your drinks were tipped into plastic cups and the music turned off as a little mexican collected the portable walkman to take it to one of the restaurants. Cocktails cannot be served after 5pm at the pool-side either as the blender is taken away cause it is needed at the evening bar! The evening bar closed at 10.30 prompt also as did the entertainment.Again 30minutes before your drinks were transferred into plastic cups! You then had the choice of the sports bar which was freezing cold and noisy, the disco or the lobby bar. I have never spent so much time in reception while on holiday, but beware, if a group of more than 3 order tequila slammers here, you are asked to drink it from the bottle as they dont have enough glasses!
Laundry takes 2days as the reception cant decide whether there is a service on Sunday or not.
The beach is small and man-made with NO water sports and my 13yr old spent his evenings sitting around the pool as he wasnt allowed in the disco or sports bar.
The holiday has been an expensive experience. The only positive being we met some great friends as you couldnt help but laugh together. If you enjoy walking, jungle creatures and want to lose weight with a tummy bug(which most everyone had a some time) then go to the GRAN FLAMENCO. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Our trip to the Occidental Grand Flamenco was sensational.

We decided to enjoy it to the fullest and registered for the Royal Club. It was well worth the xtra cost. We had a beautiful suite right on the ocean, with our own private pool, restaurant, and office with complimentary internet service.

The staff was incredible, polite, helpful, and always pleasant. We brought our 12 year old daughter along and she said she never felt so special. The food was wonderful, both in the club restaurant and in the specialty restaurants. The buffets carried such a variety that everyone could be pleased. The variety of pools provided us with a choice of activities so we were never bored, and when we did want quiet we would head to the Club private pool.
The park was immaculate, as well as the suite and nothing was left unattended. The beach was small but adequate, the water beautiful.

We also had the luxury of express check-in and out, so our arrival and departure were effortless. Our stay lasted a short week, and we never remember being so pampered in our lives. It was the most relaxing vacation we have even been on and we have traveled extensively.

We certainly plan to return next year. Our only complaints were that the golf carts seemed to always be threating to run us down, we were always looking over our shoulders. Although the water in the resort was filtered, when they watered the plants there was an offensive odor, so we assumed that water was not filtered.

My wife & I went to Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret (ish-caret) June 16th 2003 and stayed for 14 nights. We read some negative reviews before we went and had our doubts but let me tell you this place is fantastic. The staff were very friendly and more than helpful and you can tell they all love doing their jobs with pride. The food in the restaurants is amazing, our favourite was La Hacienda. You can see the menus on the hotels website. Victor at the pool bar is a riot; he makes the most amazing cocktails and generates a fantastic atmosphere. The complex is so big that we never had problems getting sun beds at any of the pools or beach. The beach is the only thing I can see people not being happy with, it is man made, but my wife isnít a confident swimmer so it was ideal. It is still excellent and full of sea life; there is also a pool bar with waiter service. The rooms are very spacious, with air con, TV, balcony and fridge with soft drinks and beer all part of the all-inclusive deal and these were restocked every day. With the hotel being next door to the Xcaret Park is a good bonus, you get one free visit and you can come & go during the day as you please because the hotel has it's own entrance. If you want to go again another day, its only $20 (cheaper than normal) if you book through hotel. We did the Dolphin Trainer for a day, well worth the cost; we spent over 5 hours in the water with the dolphins and got a video & photos included. We loved it so much we are planning to go back next year. Hope this helpsÖ

We just returned from our trip today. After reading the other reviews, we must disagree about several comments. There are public phones located close to the hospitality desk. We found plenty of shady areas to be avalible at the pool. I do agree that more bartenders were needed at the swim up bar. The pool areas were fantastic and beautifully landscaped. The mosquitoes were annoying but that is something to be expected when you travel to Mexico. The food was satisfactory, even for a picky eater as myself. The entertainment could have been better, but the jazz band was great. The resort is spread out, but the shuttles were conviently available to run you back and forth. We were a little dissapointed about the lack of beach front, but the great pool made up for it. While we were there they were filming a Mexican Soap Opera, so we ad to make ways for the many cameras and chords running about the hotel. Overall it was a very enjoyable place and I would recommend it highly. We have stayed at many, many resorts in the Cancun/Playa del Carmen area and found this one to be the nicest as of yet.

My family always travels all inclusives, this was one of the best to offer a family. The property is beautiful and clean. The room was comfortable and very clean. The safe we used everyday never a problem. The kids had plenty to do they had ice cream parties, parrot shows, magic shows, kids club open till 5pm and after dinner,There was kids games and kids disco on stage. My husband and I enjoyed the sports bar and disco along with my parents and the shows where very good not corny. Besides the mexican resturant(we were a little dissappointed) the buffets and other resturants were great. As far as the pool bar even though he was by himself at times he was up and down the bar like a road runner. I was shocked to hear someone complained about waiting a long time. This property had the most beautiful pools . There are jacuzzi's in 2 pools and a swing bar at 2 pools. There's a quiet pool and the swim up bar pool.I was also shocked that someone said swimming in the river in caves at xcaret park was no big deal. Everyone was saying how amazing it was and believe me it was!!!. They have shopping in the resort and the market comes to the resort for those who like to shop. The beach was what I expected from the reviews, but we felt safer with the children and it was still white sand and beautiful. We never had a problem finding a shady spot even after 9am or 10am. They have a gym opens at 6am and a really nice spa . A river runs through the lobby and waterfalls over the lower lobby bar. I've stayed at the moon palace and it felt like I was in Las Vegas. This place felt like I was in mexico. We loved it and we are definetly going back in 2004. P.S. Besides one or two waiters at the mexican resturant The mexican people were very friendly, helpful, and especially to my children.

We just got back from a great stay at the Xcaret Resort. My husband and I and 3 boys - ages 18, 16 and 13 would definetly go back again. The food was great at all of the restaurants, the staff was very friendly and the resort is beautiful. We were very worried about not having a big enough beach, but the volleyball court is full-sized and that is what we wanted to do on the beach. Our rooms were nothing special, but were nice enough. The bar was re-stocked every day and cute towel animals were left on the table each day too. The kids enjoyed the waterpolo and volleyball matches in the pool, the archery and riflery and tennis. The day spent in Xcaret park was wonderful - swimming with the dolphins was the highlight of my youngest son's life! The older boys enjoyed the disco and met lots of kids their own ages. The only negatives about the resort were that twice, we locked ourselves out of the room and had to get new keys - and they didn't ask for ID - they just gave us new keys. Also, if you put a glass down in the hallway, it might still be there 3 days later - it seems it's noone's job to clean up dishes, etc. in the halls. However, you do have to just tell yourself that you are in a foreign country and they don't necessarily work to our specifications. All in all, it was a great trip and we would go back again.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Occidental for one week, and in general we enjoyed the hotel and its staff. The beach was a dissapointment, but the pools made up for the lack of beach. When we arrived at the hotel at around 10:30am, we had a room right away. They showed us how to get to our building, and someone brought our bags for us. That night we went to make dinner reservations, and we booked all the way through the week. We went later in the evening, they are open late, and so there was no line. The food was okay, better than I expected. Breakfast is a must!!! True, you can make only 4 reservations, but that is all we needed. The staff was very nice, and everyone said hi as you passed. I would go back to this hotel, and I will reccomend it to my clients-only if beach is not a priority to them. We did get locked out of our saftey deposit box one day, and two other couples said the same. Someone was there to fix in one hour. That would be the only complaint besides the convention that came in close to our departure. They ruined the resort's beauty by putting Tel Cel and Nokia signs everywhere!!! All and all we did like this resort.

Dissapointed

My wife and I are fairly discriminating travelers - we normally stay at or near top of the line hotels. In Cancun, we like the Moon Palace and especially Paradisus. We decided to give Flamenco Xcaret a shot, based on some reviews and recos. keep this in mind when you read the review - it's quite possible this hotel is a decent choice for many people, but we were dissapointed overall.

Our flights into Cancun were delayed a few hours, so we got in a bit later than expected. Long line for check-in. The room we got had windows open directly into another room (and I mean, 10 feet away - no privacy - a big deal for my wife). Why a property THIS large has to have buiuldings one on top of another I'll never know. We also got 2 double beds instead of king we asked for (we requested and were moved into a better room the next day). When we arrived, no one could explain to us where we could eat (and we left at 6am for the airport, no meals on planes, so we were pretty hungry around 4pm in Cancun!). We later found out there was one place open, way down at the end of the property, but no one directed us there. Instead, we ran around for about an hour between places that were closed, but no one would tell us they were closed when we asked about it. Very frustrating.

The food at the restaurants was somewhat comparable to Paradisus, but the buffet was MUCH worse. Also, no room service! The restaurant policy was to only allow guests with a 7 day stay to eat 4 times, and that's for a property with 5 restaurants - basically not letting you eat at one. they had a coupon system (like Paradisus) and enforced it strictly (unlike Paradisus).

The biggest difference we found was the staff attitude and the 'little' things. At Paradisus, the staff tried to anticipate your wishes and help you BEFORE you asked for it. At Flamenco Excaret, not only did they not volunteer help and you had to really get it out of them, but they also didn't think to provide much info beyond what you asked. They weren't horrible or hostile -just indifferent and uncaring.

For example - no one would tell you you have to insert your room key into a slot inside your room before AC or electricty would work (EVERYONE we talked to had this same problem, it boggles my mind the check-in desk doesn't tell you). If you ask for directions to a restaurant, sometimes you wouldn't get good directions, and the staff people would NOT tell you the restaurant is closed right NOW, even if it's obvious you're headed there.

The property is very large, and it's difficult to find things at times - much better signage is needed. We didn't mind the small/man-made beach - if anything, we liked it! However, get ready to not have enough space and definitely not in the shade when you get to teh beach or to the swimming pools by later than 9am. We typically go out until late - say 3-4am, then sleep until 11-12, so this was a real problem for us. That's purely unacceptable - a rosort of this magnitude simply must have enough 'shade space' to accomodate all the guests who want it.

There are no public phones on site or nearby! To make any phone call, even locally, the hotel charges ~$3.00 USD/minute!!! Also, no free taxis/shuttles are provided, even to Playa Del Carmen 5 minutes away (Paradisus had free shuttles to basically anywhere you wanted to go in the area of Cancun).

The park adjacent to the property is great - definitely worth spending a day in there, although the river adventure everyone raves about is over-rated.

This place is GREAT for kids - we didn't bring our little one, but we've seen all kinds of kids of all ages in organized activities having all kinds of fun. In this respect, Flamenco Xcaret stands alone - I didn't see anything like this at any other hotel in Cancun.

Again, we enjoyed our stay, but we doubt we'd come back to this hotel - unlike Paradisus, where we had low expectations and were blown away, Flamenco Excaret dissapointed in many respects. If you are a traveler looking for a high quality experience, Flamenco Xcaret isn't it.

I highly recommend the Moon Palace or Paradisus, you can catch it for a good price on an Apple or Vacation Express special- very comparable to Flamenco.

I spent one week at this resort. When we arrived at 2 in the afternoon, our room was not ready. During the week we were biten terribly by misquitos every night in our room. Getting a reservation for dinner was quite difficult, first you had to wait in line, and then to find out there was little to choose from in terms of availability. Food, well finding a worm in your food, I think says enough!!!!! The hotel is very short staffed, therefore the service is lacking. For example there is one bartender at the pool bar servicing the entire pool. There is NO beach!!!! There is no staff walking around the pool serving drinks, therefore there are empty and spilled drinks all over the place. I would not recommend staying at this resort, there are much nicer resorts in the Rivera Maya!

My husband and I and another couple stayed at the Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret for the week of Jan 25 to Feb 1st 2003. We are all in our mid to late twenties. We went through Funjet and they were great. Overall the place was OK but with some flaws, they only opened in July of 2002.

Positive: The resort was absolutely beautiful and clean, landscaped really nice with stone walk ways throughout, with lots of pools and pool space and chairs but the pool was very cold. If you want a tube at the pool, sign up early, they don't have many. The rooms were real nice, marble throughout room and whole hotel, hallways were all open. Every room had a balcony with 2 chairs and a small table. Beach is only a small inlet but with lots of chair space. Hammocks through pool and beach area. We drank and ate everything with no problem. They had water bottled in Mexico in our mini bar that we drank all week with no problem. That water and the sprite had a little of a funny taste but everything was fine. They say the refill the mini bar every other day but ours was filled every day. Most of the staff was real nice; they would all say hi and smile as you passed them but watch out for the golf carts, they really get going in them things. They also give you a free day at the neighboring Xcaret Park ($50 admission) that you can come and go as you please through out the day.

Negative: We arrived at 10:30 am on Saturday, when we arrived we went up to the desk and registered, the desk staff was very nice. We filled out the form and they gave us our bracelets to eat and they told us to come back at 3pm to get our rooms. We came from Cleveland and our flight was at 6am so we had been up since 1am in winter clothes. All we wanted to do was shower, change and rest but could not do that until 3pm. We did eat and get something to drink and there were plenty of comfortable couches but it was still a huge inconvenience to have to wait almost 5 hours to check in. Another thing that made me uncomfortable was we just left our luggage in the entrance, it was fine and there is a lot of other luggage there. I went and got into it several times; no one ever said anything to me.

The other big bad thing was the food situation. It said 11 restaurants and that was probably true but here is the breakdown. There were 5 specialty restaurants that you had to make reservations for and if you wanted to make them for that day it probably would be full so you had to make it for the next few days but only for 2 days ahead cause that is all they would let you. And you had to go to the desk across from the check in desk from 8am-2pm and there was usually a line and they only had dinner in those restaurants from 6pm to 10pm. Also they did not all know the same rules, one girl told us you had to go to the buffet restaurant every other night (which would mean you would not get all 5 restaurants in on a 7 day trip).
