Blue Beach May 30 - June 4, 2003
By: Anonymous from Kansas City MO
Date of Visit: May 2003
We were pleasantly surprised with our stay at Blue Beach. This was our first visit to Playa. There was limited information and marketing hype on property. We were doing a last minute trip(booked room 3 days before leaving) and had limited expectations. This is a boutique type property and not a large upscale all inclusive. We stayed in a 2nd story master suite, 2 large bedrooms, 2 large baths, 2 cable TV's, small kitchenette, in room safe, and dining room/family room area with couch. It also can be divided and rented as 2 junior suites. A large concrete deck completely surrounded the whole second floor with shade from palm trees. Our room did not have a hammock on the deck, but most do.
The property is not new but has weathered well and appears well maintained. Although the suite was not advertised as oceanview the deck allowed an ocean view in two areas. At $100/night total for 4 people, with maid service( kept very clean), air conditioning (seperate units for each area) , and bottled water service(5 gal jub with pump) it was a good value. The employees were very conscencious of the property and those entering it. The beach is shaded with palm trees, provided with beach lounging chairs, and has a small beach restaurant with drink service to your chair. For swimming and water activities it is a short walk to Coco Beach(1/4 mile north which is the best beach in the area). The water area of the beach directly in front of Blue Beach usually had small fishing boats and some rocks but was adequate to jump in and cool off with.
It is 2 blocks from the heart of the best restaurant area of Fifth Ave(stay away from the south end of 5th avenue as it primarily consists of street hucksters geared toward Cancun bus tourists and cruise ship tourists. The quality, variety, and price of the food on 5th Ave. was so good I can't image anyone staying at an all inclusive in Playa. The area has a very diverse cultural feel with more Europeans and South Americans than US citizens ther while we visited. A car is not required in Playa. A taxi ride to the large grocery store is only $2. You can walk to the ferry to Cozumel and take a nice snorkelling trip(most liturature says there is snorkelling from shore at Playa but if you have much Carribean snorkelling experience you will be disappointed unless you go to Cozumel). Cozumel is a nice place to snorkel/dive but I would not want to stay there. With Blue Beach the only down side is the area north between there and the Gran Porto Real is under decay/reconstruction and probably should be avoided at night. The Gran Porto Real must mean large Italian architechure all inclusive hotel that is eroding into the sea and where all the stinking seaweed collects daily. The whole feel to the Playa area reminds me of Aspen CO in the 1970's before big money and big corporations took over. My reccommendation is go now before it is too late. If your idea of a perfect vacation is a cruise ship, all inclusive, or Cancun, you probably would not fit in in Playa. A little background about the reviewer, we are a family of 4 ( husband, wife, 18 year old daughter and 20 year old son) that love the water and beach. We have vacationed in St Thomas, Aruba, Key West, and Cayman Islands. The Blue Beach experience was equal or better than our other trips.
