Great Resort
By: Anonymous from BC Canada
Date of Visit: March 2008
The food, staff, room, cleanliness, bars, organization, and beach sand were all great. The only complaints I can think of is the room walls and roof letting noise in/out. The roof is thatch and the walls are typical 4 inch concrete. The units are 8 room condos. The beach is disappearing fast. If you find pictures from a few years ago and compare it to present ones you will see what I mean. Do not try to snorkel out front, you will see nothing. Having said that the resort is awsome. 5th Ave. is a great, close place to shop, hang out and party. The Ferry to Cozemel is at 5th Ave and very close, walk if you want. We went to Xcaret (15-20 min ride) and spend $100/person at the front desk for swimming with the dolphins and $125 to get into Xcaret. Do not waste your time with the hotel or street venders trying to get a deal unless you have a large group. Take a taxi there and back as we wasted alot of time (one or two mexican minutes) waiting for our tour group getting organized. Xcaret is huge and I wished we could have stayed another day. Cozamel has good snorkeling and we really did not stay there long enough. So we will definantly go back to Allegro playa car. I can not imagine the above negative users experience/comments being accurate at all. More likely someone who does not like occidental AI. The food was all very good and meal times had a large window. We went with friends and kids. It is not a wild party place but there were a lot of younger to 25 year olds having a great time but the resort was well organized and kept the noise away from the rooms after ten pm. The only bars that were open were up at the lobby and I sleeped great. Go, you will love it!

Overall Great Trip
By: Anonymous from Toronto
Date of Visit: July 2004
My husband and I just came back yesterday from the Allegro Playacar. We stayed for one week. This is our fourth trip to the Playa del Carmen area so you can obviously tell that we love it. Overall, the resort was great. The food was plentiful and good. There were two a la carte restaurants (Mexican and Italian) - we did not go to either during our stay. The reason being that you had to make advance reservations for a specific time and being on vacation we did not want to commit ourselves to any timetables so we ate at the main buffet restaurant during our stay. As far as drinking water goes, we never had any problems at all. Our maid (who was absolutely fabulous!!) left us at least 2-3 bottles of water in our room daily along with 2-3 coffee packets. We also found small surprises in our room every day - she always decorated our beds with an array of flowers daily and would hang the curtains various ways and tie them back with flowers. There were also a few evenings when we came back to our room and even found our beds turned down! She was superb! (important note: a little tipping goes a long way - I realize the resort is all inclusive but let us not forget that these people clean OUR mess up after us! My belief is that showing a little extra gratitute goes a very long way as we witnessed first hand).
We found all of the staff very friendly and helpful. Everyone always had a smile for us and a kind word. Even though we could see how busy they were and what long hours they put in (we normally saw the same faces from 7 am to 11 pm!!) they always made time to come over and ask us how we were enjoying our stay and asking us about where we come from and how we like Mexico, etc. Just absolutely beautiful people! (that's why we keep going back!!)
The activities and entertainment were good. There was always something going on. Whether or not you choose to participate is up to you.
The resort grounds are stunning. So lush and clean. The beach is georgeous! I have to stay we took several walks along the beach just to scope out other resorts and none compared to Allegro's beach! The best part of Allegro is that the main pool is practically directly on the beach. We often hopped from pool to beach all day! You are not really committed to one or the other - this way you have the best of both. None of the other resorts that we saw have that. A few years ago my husband and I honeymooned at the Iberostar which is abound a 10-15 minute walk south of the Allegro and the beach was nothing like the Allegro.
Also, there is a little pizza place and snack bar by the pool/beach so you don't even have to change from you bathing suit to eat lunch. You could just each your lunch at the beach/pool.
The other best bonus feature that we found is that the town of Playa del Carmen (which you must see if you go there) is within walking distance. My husband and I walked into town several times (20-25 minute walk). There is also a little plaza about a 5 minute walk across the street from the resort. This way you are not committed to staying on the resort the whole time - you can get out and do things and enjoy the people and culture. It is very safe and very clean. We were often off of the resort property late in the evening walking around and never felt unsafe for even a moment.
I can go on and on but won't. The only thing I can say is that I would definitely recommend it and I know for sure that my husband and I will be back again. Go, have a great time and remember, it's all what you make it!

Fun and Friendly
By: Anonymous from Colorado Springs, CO
Date of Visit: February 2003
We just visited (Feb 2004, not 2003).The staff is friendly, professional, and fun. The meals are good but the buffet is the same thing every day. The beach is incredible. The pool is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate. The only real knock on the resort is the rooms. They are basic and noises are easily heard. I heard the guy in the room next to us vomiting and flatulating after a night of partying too hard. The beds are concrete slabs with a mattress on top. They have 2 restaurants that you can make reservations to the previous night that you want to eat there. The restaurants are Mexican and Italian. We went to the Mexican restaurant and it was fantastic food. Overall, we were treated like royalty and had a great time.

Terrible isn't even close!
By: Anonymous from Toronto, ONT
Date of Visit: December 2003
I recently had the misfortune of going to a resort in Mexico. It was called Occidental Allegro Playacar and it was sold as a great 4 star resort. The resort looked fabulous on the net, all the reviews, pictures, descriptions were Great! Once I got there, the resort left a lot to be desired. In fact, it was a complete DISASTER!!!
The rooms were shabby motel rooms with very very thin walls. I could hear my next door neibhours too clearly for my liking. It was very dark and smelly in there as well.
The resort itself was fairly dirty, and poorly designed. Walkways were dirty, service fromt he staff was non-existent. I didnt' even know if there were any Activity personel working at the hotel.
The beach was nice, however instead of palm trees they had these thatched mushroom umbrellas. They're fine in general, however these ones were infected with GIant-sized fruit flies, or some such thing, and they were always landing on you, and biting you. Not a single peaceful moment.
The resort had a problem with their drinks. Straws it seems are a rare commodity here. NO straws. Anywhere in the hotel. This hotel also doesn't skimp on the amount of ice (probably NOT purified) that they put into the drink, so the ONLY way anyone can drink, is if they use a fork to first toss all the ice out of the glass.
Now, I say probably not purified, since we got sick. Not a pleasant experience. Thank god for Immodium.
When we were complaining to our Sunquest Rep, a saleperson from the parent company of the hotel (Occidental) walked by, and hearing our complaints, wanted to listen in more in depth. When we told him that this was a very poor 4star resort, he scoffed and stated that the company doesn't recognize it as anything higher than a 3 star!
We then requested a switch over from our rep, as she offered it to us. She actually informed us, that we weren't the first to have thought the Allegro was bad enough to get a transfer out of. How ridiculous that it is still being sold as a 4 star.
NEVER EVER travel to an Occidental property in general, and the Allegro in particular!

Some pluses and some negatives
By: Anonymous from Toronto, Ontario
Date of Visit: March 2003
Our room had a king size bed (very firm, no box spring) was somewhat small, dark, a bit noisy and a bit musty but we didn't spend that much time there.
Beach and pool facilities are great (get to the beach before breakfast to save a lounge chair under one of the thatched umbrellas).
Food in the 2 a la carte restaurants was very good and the buffet dining was the usual (breakfasts quite good). Staff are friendly. The resort is a nice 15 - 20 minute walk to town. Also in the other direction a 5 minute walk away is a small plaza for tourist shopping (including internet cafe - cheaper than at hotels, also public phone to use phone card and avoid hotel extra charges).
The property was clean and in a very nice setting.
