Real Gem in Jamaica
By: Anonymous from Iowa
Date of Visit: December 2010
I stayed at Whitfield Hall in December 2010 and hiked to the peak of Blue Mountain. The hostel was built in 1776. It is very quiet place surrounded by huge 230 years old eucalyptus trees. People who take care of the hostel are really kind, quiet, reliable, and honest. You can just relax and spend time without TV, advertisements, internet, etc. It is a real gem in Jamaica and we are so thankful that we found this place. Also you can request meals with cheap price. They will cook an authentic Jamaican food in mountain area for you. Red bean soup with dumpling and yum is really yummy! The lady who is handling the reservation at Kingston sounds little bit grumpy, but PLEASE don’t give up this place because of her. The hall and people who live there are really nice! We think this place is much cooler than beach area. No harassing by street vendors at all. If you are not a big fan of tourism, Whitfield hall is the place to visit and stay for a week. We will visit there again definitely.
Thank Tiger and his family. Please keep this place alive for us. Peace.

Lovely spot in the mountains
By: Anonymous from Tampa, FL
Date of Visit: December 2005
The trip up into the Blue Mountains by 4 wheel drive Land Rover is not for the faint hearted, but wow, is it worth it. I got to stay in a house built in 1776 in the middle of some of the loveliest mountains I've ever seen -- and I've been to Switzerland, the Himalayas, etc. It's not that they're so tall -- but the scenery is BOTH tropical and mountainous. Surreal. The owner of Whitfield Hall, Mr. Allgrove, knows everything there is to know about plants (and coffee, which they grow) and he's more than happy to tell you about the flowers, the birds, etc.
The accomodations aren't fancy. By fancy, I meant no Frette sheets with Leonidas chocolates or room service. It's a farmhouse that functions as a guesthouse. For luxury in the moutains, I'd try Strawberry Hill or some other beautiful resort. This place is simpler and A LOT cheaper -- I slept in the cottage, which is a two bedroom, one bath cottage with a small porch. I also spent time in the main house in front of the fireplace. I spent about $15 a night (per person) and enjoyed myself immensely.

Excellent!
By: Anonymous from Miami, FL
Date of Visit: June 2005
This is a really cool place for anyone who wants to see a little-known side of Jamaica. The Blue Mountains are so pretty, and this little inn is in a very remote, unspoilt part of the mountains. Most of the rooms have bunkbeds, so it's pretty simple. They might be upgrading a room or two -- check with the owner. If you're interested in getting away from it all -- really away, not lying next to 500 other people on the beach in Ocho Rios -- Whitfield Hall is just the spot. One thing is that it can be surprisingly chilly. The staff people will light fires if you ask. I think this is a good side trip for anyone going to Jamaica -- get away from people hustling you on the beaches, and meet some real people who are nice, considerate, and interesting. Meeting the folks up at Whitfield Hall gave me a whole different perspective on the country!
