Date of Visit: May 2004
Stayed here 3 nights in early May 2004. I have stayed at other places in Jamaica, and this place just wasn't as nice. First, the property is built upward on a slope, which creates nice views, but there is a lot of walking involved, up and down the stairs. Don't bother with the elevator cause it's always clogged with the housekeeping cart. There are a ton of kids at this place! Tons! If you want a vacation with lots of screaming kids in the pool, this is your place! The 'beach' here is not a real beach- go to Negril if you want a real beach. Here, it's just a little strip of sand (about an 1/8 of a mile) with very few beach chairs and lots of seaweed. While the place is 'weathered' compared to newer resorts, it looks as if some parts have been remodeled over time. In the bathroom, I had a new marble or granite sink, but the tub was old with rusty handles. Another thing I noticed was that the 'alcohol' must be watered down, cause I never felt a buzz even after drinking a few drinks. Maybe it's because this place is a 'kids' resort, and they don't want drunk people running around everywhere. Another reason to avoid Ocho Rios is the horrible drive- advertised as 2 hours, but really takes closer to 3 hours. The road is a mess, very dangerous, and it took nearly 4 and a half hours to get to the airport because we got caught up in a dead-stopped traffic jam because a truck had crushed a car in an accident. When we drove by the scene, there was a dead woman in the car. Not my idea of vacationland, but oh well, things happen. Just be careful on the road. Oh yeah, be prepared for rain- this is the rainy part of the island. Again, go to Negril for better chances of staying dry. That's all I can think of- I rate this place 2 stars out of 5.
