Worst Experience Ever
By: Pissed Off from Dover, Delaware
Date of Visit: June 2003
My trip to Jamaica in this hotel had to be the worst travel experience in my life. As soon as we got to the hotel, we were early so we ate at the in-hotel restaurant. We were seated right away to a dirty table in the middle of the room and handed an over priced menu. Being as hungry as we were, we ordered 3 curried chickens ($5 each) and a grilled cheese ($6), (4 of us there). We then sat and waited, and waited, watched 3 seperate groups of locals be seated, waited, watched the 3 be served, waited again watching 2 of the 3 groups finish and leave, then finally we recieved our meals (at approximately 58 minutes later!). The chicken was horrid. It looked like half a cornish hen thrown in a blender with highlighter ink, bones and all. The grilled cheese must have been from goat or something because it was discolored and tasted stale. We finished half the meal due to the amount of bones in the curry and the taste of the cheese, and were served the menu. It read: 3 Curried Chicken @ $9 each! We complained and watched the manager argue with the server(who was trying to get her to change it to $5 as stated on the menu). 10 more minutes later a new bill was given to us almost suitable to our tastes.
We left the restaurant displease and was shown to our room. To our surprise it was actually pretty nice (it was a corner room so it was bigger than the rest). The only problem we had with the room is that the water pressure for the shower was very low. We then decided to explore the 'Hip Strip' and was scared $hitless. As soon as we left the gates, locals constantly harrassed us for a taxi and 'smoke'. They even would step right in front of us if we said no then continued to ask us if we wanted something from them. We walked about 50 yards south of the hotel then immediately turned back because we were fed up with the locals. We then decided to call it a day.
In Jamaica (according to the in-room tour book) it is law to honk your horn for certain actions you take in your car such as coming around a corner or backing up. I say this because the Gloustershire has a bend in the road not to far from it both to the right and to the left of it AND it has the beach across the street with parking spaces. The windows are paper thin so pretty much you heard every car screaming down the road ALL NIGHT. That must be why its called the hip strip because the shops are all run down. The next day we went to the beach, and again were harrassed for a taxi and smoke even though they saw us heading for the beach. Its a beautiful beach but small, and make sure to eat at the 'Groovy Grouper', its fantastic. We went on tours the next days so I can't say anything about the hotel for those times. But after that we tryed to swim in the pool there. It had no chlorine in it and plenty of leafs, and ofcourse as EVERYONE else says, the jacuzzi did NOT work. The maid also kepted giving us odd numbers of towels such as 3 then 2 then 5, never 4. The breakfast was a rip off, $10 for a small buffet.
The only fun that I seriously had in that area was the casino (EXCELLENT SERVICE), Pier 1 (once again EXCELLENT SERVICE and extremely cheap meals too! $6 for almost anything, and $2 for any drink you can think of [from heiny to a by the bay] and they have very exciting fashion shows on wednesdays!), and Margeritaville!
Margeritaville, don't trust the ads and the bartenders are truely rude. I say don't trust the ads because they said win $100 USD for a dance contest and all I won was $100 USD worth of alchol! AND they said free shots for the ladies and the bartenders denighed the ad even when we showed it to them and then they said that you would get some shots from the DJ gesturing with his hand 'jerking off'.
CONCLUSION: It is an OK rundown quality inn on a very dangerous and annoying road.
