fabulous gem
By: Anonymous from New York
Date of Visit: June 2007
this resort is a fabulous gem in the ruff. The hotel is very small, intimate, quiet, with lots to do or not. It depends on your needs and what you are looking for. It suited us to a tee and we loved it. The staff were fantastic and truly warm, caring, and helpful. Jamaica is great and would come back again.

The Busy Traveler
By: The Busy Traveler from New york
Date of Visit: February 2007
My family and I stayed at Beaches Sandy Bay in February. The rooms were very disappointing, but I have to say it was the best vacation ever. Sandy Bay is the most relaxing and friendly resort. The food was great and the staff was extremely accomodating. I felt like a princess. The beach is absolutely breath taking. We all had a wonderful time. If you didn't have a good time, it was your own fault. We knew all the staff by their first names. The restaurants were very tasty. The rooms need updating - but they are all ocean front. Please update the rooms!! I would definately go back.

a nice get-away
By: Anonymous from Canada
Date of Visit: November 2005
My husband and I took our two children (8 &10 ) to BSB last Nov. for a one week stay (our third trip to Jamaica and our children's first trip anywhere by plane). Overall we really enjoyed our week. The resort is a bit pricey in our view for the quality/size of the rooms (we did not see the suites - hear they are better) but the rooms really are our only complaint (also the walls were thin - could hear conversations in neighboring rooms). We found the resort to be beautifully maintained (grounds), the staff friendly and helpful, the beach enjoyable and the food was great (lots of choice offerred). Food-wise, we would have liked to have seen more offerings in the way of fruit given that this is the carribean. Aside from that we had no issues. Our children really enojoyed the resort - took part in some of the kids camp activities and thoroughly enjoyed day trips over to Beaches Negril (larger resort with water park).

Had a great getaway at Beaches Sandy Bay
By: Anonymous from Wisconsin
Date of Visit: January 2006
What a wonderful time we had at Beaches Sandy Bay. The staff was uber-friendly, the rooms were clean and comfortable (but not luxurious) and are so close to the beach. The buffet was decent. There was always a large selection from which to choose, but it wasn't always very warm. Go eat early if this will bother you. My 2 year old visited the 'sesame nursery' a few times and seemed to enjoy it. It was also a nice chance for mom and dad to truly relax for awhile. We had a 1 bedroom honeymoon suite, which was great. It had a king sized bed, a microwave and mini-fridge, a large bathroom, 2 pull out sofas and a large veranda...we were on the 1st floor, so we often left our veranda doors open and sat out on the beach, which was only a few steps away from our room. The beach itself was so clean and beautiful. Overall this was a lovely vacation. If your family includes children that are pre-teens or younger, this is THE place to go. Older children would probalby enjoy Beaches Negril more.

SECOND TIME IS A CHARM
By: C Cole from Chicago, IL/Milwaukee, WI
Date of Visit: September 2004
I previously wrote an article not to flattering about Sandy Bay, and I must admit that as a 'returning guest' you are treated like royalty and they have made numerous improvements since last year. Immediately, I was upgraded to a beautiful room. (All rooms are oceanfront.)I participated in just about ever watersport at the property...visited the piano bar and waterpark at Beaches Negril and enjoyed going back to my peaceful abode at Sandy Bay.
Some of the workers even remembered me from the previous year. Everything was wonderful!I wrote the previous review and very impressed this time around.

Good/Bad/Ugly
By: C Cole from Chicago-IL/Milwaukee, WI
Date of Visit: August 2003
1. Air Jamaica-if you have a choice, Air Jamaica is worth it. Free movie, best airline food meal, music and staff puts you in a Jamaica mood.
2. Customs-quick-both ways.
3. Beach-white sands, irredescent turquoise water-perfect water temperature.
4. Weather-even the rain was warm!
5. Watersports/Entertainment Areas-Staff friendly and award deserving. Encouraged to try new things without annoying you. Watersport equipment available right away.
6. View of ocean from every single room.
7. Fruitplate and Appleton Rum complimentary-nice added touch.
8. Strawberry daquiris-best at Sandy Bay of all three resorts.
9. Access to Beaches Negril and Sandals at a Sandy Bay price.
10. Negril-perfect vacation spot-laid back-beautiful.
BAD/EVEN UGLY AT TIMES
1. I have heard of people not complaining about the rooms. I am not high maitenance by any means, but the first room they tried to give me was awful. When the representative walked me to my room, she didn't even go in, after I unlocked the door, she left. There was a lot of water damage. Water seeping in the closet. I didn't want to put my bridesmaid dress in there. The next room seemed more well-maitained but it was a constant mold odor.
2. Them dang crickets. I was on the first floor, and they were loud. But I realized I was in there city, so we got along well.
3. Sandy Bay buffet-not as many choices as at Beaches Negril and Sandals. If you will like to eat at any restaurant that required reservations, book them as soon as you arrive, or else it will be very difficult. Buffet at Sandals was excellent.
4. Phone calls-do not purchase a calling card-no matter what. The phones won't accept them. Have the hotel operator place your calls-(cheaper than using phone instructions with credit card) You are also charged for no answers, so dispute them with hotel. Hang up before 2 minutes or they will give you a problem refunding. Otherwise RENTACELL is a great option.
5. Poverty along the way to hotel. The people oddly enough seem to look happy. Maybe they know a secret.
6. Nightclub-not much of an option at Sandy Bay. Go to the city. Try out the beach parties. Ask staff for hot nights at the clubs.
7. Night pass at Hedonism-not worth it. Probably a better deal if you stay, but do not purchase the night pass.
8. Shuttle to Negril-should be more trips
9. The ride-It can scare the timid, but it wasn't too bad, much of the roads are paved, but they do drive on the left side of the road, no traffic lights, everything and everyone is walking in the street. The driver zooms down hills and roads, but we all made in in one piece. Our driver honked hello at everyone.
10. Patience-you require a lot of it at times if their is a management issue or request.
Overall, my first experience with Negril was lovely. The room situation bothered me. From the wait to transport my luggage, to me carrying it around myself. I was so annoyed I wanted to cry, but when I looked at the view of the ocean. I felt peace. I felt so close to God. I would go through all the aggravation again, the feel that feeling of peace that I had all while I was there. I felt safe, there were times I even left my door unlocked. A more detail description of my joys and angst are on tripadvisor.

Not worth the high price
By: Nathan from Pittsburgh, PA
Date of Visit: June 2003
This letter is regarding our recent trip/wedding at Sandy Bay Beaches in Negril, Jamaica, both good and bad BAD 1. Upon arrival in Jamaica, we proceeded to the Beaches counter located in the airport. All room vouchers were given to the representative. There were only 4 rooms for 5 couples. All parties had to remain at the airport for 20-30 minutes while the problem was “SUPPOSEDLY” being rectified. (We booked over 9 months in advance) 2. From the airport, take your own bags to the shuttle. If not, the concierges will take your bags and will demand a tip, as was the case with our party. Be patient on the trip from the airport to the hotel. You’re looking at a good hour and a half to get from Montego Bay to the resort. The poverty along the way is distressing. 3. At the hotel, after the ordeal at the airport, we were delayed once more because the problem we initially encountered was not rectified. After waiting 20 more minutes, the four couples traveling with my wife and I received their room assignments and my wife and I had to wait an additional 30 minutes until a “room” was being cleaned. 4. We finally received our room and were “thrown” in a room with double beds, in corner of the hotel area, facing a road and work-out center. This was not acceptable for a couple who were going to get married at this resort!!!!!!!!!!!! Any time we had a problem, nobody ever gave us a straight answer. In talking to other couples, MANY, no lie, MANY of them had difficulties with the rooms. It seemed as though everyone we talked to had some sort of problem. We had problems with the T.V.s in both of the rooms we were given. The first had green people, and the second was faulty and had to be replaced. 5. As I understand, couples getting married on the resort receive a complementary bottle of Rum and a fruit basket. We never received this and when it was told to the manager in charge, the response received back was just a puzzled look!!!!!! Nothing was ever given to us. Our wedding itinerary was also placed in someone else’s room. We had to retrieve that from them. We did not receive this wedding information until late in the evening the night of our arrival which stated that we would meet with the wedding coordinator early the next morning. 6. Beaches has an exchange shuttle between Sandy Bay and Negril. There are not too many shuttles at night and when we went over on the 7:30 p.m. shuttle, we couldn’t get into a sit-down restaurant, so more buffet food.
GOOD 7. The wedding and subsequent reception after went off without any problems. In fact it was beautiful and well done/organized. I recommend not purchasing a picture package with the resort. Instead, work out something with the photographer. One thing you might want to be aware of if you are getting married there is that you will choose 1 complementary 5X7 photograph and purchase any additional photos for $10. each. We had 5 to choose from. When purchased, they enclosed them in an envelope and HOLE-PUNCHED the negatives that we did not purchase so we couldn’t reproduce them later. When we got home and wanted to enlarge our pictures, but we had a problem. The lady that hole-punched the pictures punched the wrong one, and we had to spend more money to digitally enhance the negative of the picture we bought that had a hole punched through it. 8. The food was excellent!!! However, if you go to a sit down place for dinner instead of the grill or buffet, do not expect to get drink orders too fast. They have nice employees, but in Jamaica there are two speeds…slow and slower. Not accustomed to that with a fast-paced lifestyle…it gets frustrating. It is also hard to remember when things open and close. You simply cannot get a drink at all hours of the day as the “all inclusive” makes it appear. 9. The grounds are clean and the people and the food at the Sundowner restaurant were fantastic. Reserve early We will never go back to a Beaches or Sandals Resort and will not recommend it to anyone interested. Nothing but the wedding went well, I’m sorry to say. Not what we expected considering it is the quote “best-all-inclusive resort” 4 years in a row.” I’d like to have some input on the voting!!!
