Seaside Paradise

We enjoyed our stay at this condo very much. At one time it used to be an all inclusive, but is not anymore it is mostly privately owned. So pool works, jacuzzi does't, and I guess they use to have a games room but because the owners don't want to pay upkeep monies it is not what I heard it use to be (an owner of one of the condos was a source of good info). But we were not looking for an all inclusive resort this time there, it was mostly what we were looking for.
For the first couple of days we stumble through being on our own, we got a motorbike ride into town one day and rented a vehicle for three days (actually worked out to be really two days, ha ha).
We then drove up to Playa Grande, it was fun and a true experience. Our first night there we were in late (8pm) we were taken to our room by a gentlemen all was well.We asked if there was somewhere to eat, and he set us up with a cab, which took us to a place (Tropicale)at Sea Grapes Village (About 1/2 mile NE of Cabarete). The food here is to die for, especially the desserts, cheap, classy and the service gracious, Delio is a wonderful host. We made a habit out of coming here for dinner.
During our two week stay we got to know (as well we could considering the language barrier)our valet, Eduardo, he was sad to see us leave. We will be back. There was a very nice young man who worked days at the front desk and small grocery store (he was studying English Correspondance)he got us a cab that happpened to be his brother Tony (Almonte),from Taxi Sosua Y Cabarete, this man was wonderful, he would pick us up and while we shopped in the grocery store he would wait, or if we were going to town he would always come back for us when we called him. We called it round trip 200 Pesos.
One night he brought his daughter, what a sweet gorgeous child. We made arrangements with Tony to take us to the airport on our departure day, he did, and he picked us up early, and gave us a two hour tour of Puerto Plata, we went around the beachfront parks, Forteleza, and the amber museum, we spent lots of money in the jewelry store, bought cigars at the cigar store, and rum, it was an excellent way to end our vacation, Tony is a real jewel, we bought him lunch at a restaurant that he likes, a good choice the food was excellent, and cheap. My husband had fresh hand picked lobster and so did Tony as he said it is the best. All this for 5000 Pesos. It was worth it. During our stay there Tony hooked us up (he was great for this) with a friend who did horseback riding tours. We paid 500 pesos for a 5 1/2 ride, with lunch at a Dominican Families home, it was really good. We had some americans on our tour but they did not like it too much I think as they complained a lot and opted out of the lunch, beach and river tour. They missed some of the best things. We went to where the river tours come in and where the river flows into the ocean, is it evedr warm. It was just warm period, so we ordered cervaza at the canteena there, bought one for Alex our guide, he was a lot of fun, and he was having fun with us. Instead of taking us back to the corral with the horses (then get a cab)he rode us right back to our beachfront condo at Orilla Del Mar. And we had the perfect room overlooking the pool and beach. We will come back to this place if they still have rentals. We enjoyed the condo, price was great, people were wonderful.
We found a place called Jose' O'Shays on Cabarete beach, it was a little bit more pricey but still okay, food was really good, lots of it, and the drinks are greeeaaaaaaaaaat!Especially the different Coladas, and watching the kite surfers is really cool.Worth the price. And there is lots of places along this beach to carouse, great fun. Each time we go to the DR, we enjoy it more.
