Terribly deceitful and rude management!!!
By: Anonymous
Date of Visit: July 2007
This hotel is not what the people running it advertise it to be, but instead a bunch of lies, poor management, and false advertisement. We were coaxed into signing up for a Time Share tour with which we were guaranteed other benefits and gifts even if a purchase wasn't made. After a tour of the hotel we were not impressed at all with any of the facilities due to many factors and ended up not buying a time share. The manager not only then went back on his word but also did so in a very poor way being very rude and uncourteous in a very offending way. The manager then, as we watched another couple come in, acted as though they were his best friends and treated their baby like a cute puppy dog. This hotel is only out for one reason..............
TO GET YOUR MONEY!
...........I definitely wouldn't ever trust these people with my vacation enjoyment!!!

Stay AWAY

Stay at El Cid at your own risk!!! I had such high hopes for this vacation. My girlfriend and I were really looking forward to it but it was a true disaster in all respects. We were led to our room by a bellhop who practically ran down the halls with our luggage. We chased after him so we could get in the elevator before the doors closed. Our room smelled of mildew and mold. We complained at the desk and they moved us into another room. The second room was better. However, it did have cockroches in one of the bathrooms and the other bathroom leaked on our heads from toilet water in the above unit. We told them about the bugs and the manager asked me why I didn't like cockroaches. I think he was joking but it was hard to tell. The staff sprayed but never cleaned up the corpses. They remained the ENTIRE vacation even after we informed the manager that they were in the bathroom. The air conditioning unit in the hotel blows directly on your face when you sleep. The TV gets very poor reception.
WE ATE IN THE RESTAURANT ON MONDAY AFTERNOON IN THE RESORT. I ATE A SHRIMP BISQUE FOR LUNCH AND RECEIVED SEVERE FOOD POISIONING. I VOMETED FOR THREE DAYS. WHEN I TOLD THE MANAGER ABOUT THIS, HE SAID THAT THIS IS COMMON HERE. HE, ADMITTIDELY TOLD ME THAT HE GETS SICK HIMSELF IN HIS OWN RESTAURANT EVERY SIX MONTHS. HE OFFERED TO GIVE ME A GIFT CERTIFICATE TO ANOTHER RESTAURANT KNOWING I COULD NOT EAT-NO APPOLOGY OR ANYTHING. IN FACT, HE TOLD ME I HAD TO CALM DOWN OR HE WOULD NOT HELP ME.
Would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy!! If you want a lousy time, go to El Cid. Please contact me at freemalo@hotmail.com if you want more information.

Pleased With Our Stay
By: Alice from Stockton, CA
Date of Visit: June 2004
Just got back from a wonderful trip to Cozumel. Stayed at El Cid La Ceiba. Didn't stay in the hotel, but rather the other building for timeshare owners. Very clean room, excellent service. Excellent snorkeling right off of the beach, and easy access into the water. Also nice area for SCUBA diving. We are planning a trip next May.

Get better sleep, stay somewhere else

The fact that this is rated a gold crown resort is a JOKE. The is a 2 star hotel that El Cid took over. But they don't plan to remodel, they're just going to funnel their profits into a new resort they plan to build on the Mayan Riviera across the way. The only reason this resort is Gold Crown is because other El Cids are Gold Crown and they have the new resort planned. But don't be fooled. You could stay in a $25/night place and get the same thing you get here. Sure you may get free breakfast but the variety is lacking and it gets old after the second or third day.
First of all, you're lucky if you get the room you were promised. We met a group of four that reserved a 1 bedroom but were stuffed into a studio unit.
The rooms are not maintained well and most everything did not work. We had to call maintenance on a daily basis for things such as the A/C not working properly, lamp bulbs needing to be replaced, resetting the circuit because it blew every time we used the microwave, etc. The bathrooms smelled. The beds are hard as most are in Mexico. Worse yet, in order to close doors, you have to slam them and the walls are thin. You won't get a good night's sleep at La Ceiba. And when you ask to change rooms, they admit they put you into a noisy room on purpose.
It's also interesting that if you are a timeshare owner with 'VIP' (what a rip off), you cannot get an automatic upgrade, however if you are willing to pay extra, they suddenly seem to have the rooms available.
Speaking of timeshares, they try to sell hard at this resort but don't get suckered, it's not worth it to stay in place like this. P.S. The concierge is especially part of this scheme. Don't purchase tickets from them, they take a 20% service charge and you'll find you can get stuff cheaper if you go directly to the site. Don't feel like you need to go to a timeshare talk to get discounts. Their 'discounts' are normal price. They just mark everything up 50% then tell you that you get a 50% discount if you go to a talk. That's a lie.
When anything goes wrong, no one there cares and you're stuck. They'll tell you that they will take care of it but after hearing that 3 days in a row, you realize they'll keep on tell you that until you leave.
I definitely plan to go back to cozumel but I will not stay at La Ceiba again. Do yourself a favor, research places and find a better place to stay. La Ceiba was not relaxing and the service was horrible.
