Be Careful
By: Anonymous from Michigan
Date of Visit: April 2007
Well, the dining room waitstaff was second to none. Thats about where the good comments end. We took 40 high school seniors here in April 2007 for Spring break and they behaved good under the circumstances. This hotel took our reservations a year early but at about the 5 month mark called our travel agent concerned about the amount of kids coming even though we had plenty of chaperones. security watched us like hawks. The food was tough to eat after the 3rd day and most went to town to eat. So much for the all inclusive. They had only 1 kind of beer and it was draft. Bottom shelf liquor unless you ask for something else, even though they proudly display all the good liquors.(watch them reach under the bar when mixing the drinks). Whoops, need more space to include everything. Lock items in safes in rooms. We had guests who had things missing from rooms. When trying to dispute charges upon check out, were told "we already charged it to your card" and then, "if you don't like it we can call the police, you are in Mexico now" Many in our party were ill and not sure if from the food or what. Birds fly around the dining area landing on tables and counters. Great!! The "disco and karoke" which was touted as a plus for the kids was a room of about 5 booths and four tables. Several said they wouldn't go back. Pluses were the location and the dive shop operator who was honest.

OK, but that's it.

@0 days at the El Cozumeleno
The property is nice... Front Desk Staff TERRIBLE!!!
Front Desk staff had the attitude that you are inconveniencing them if you ask them a question, or have a problem. The front desk manager Julio is worthless and should be fired. This guy could barely run a motel 6 let alone a resort. They screwed up our reservations, I told them to call Orbitz, and they told me Orbitz was closed at 4pm on a Friday. I called Orbitz and for 20 minutes no one at the hotel answered the phone, I could hear it ringing from the front desk. Word of caution, their wrist bands are garbage. 3 people in our groups bands broke, they wanted to charge us $10 to replace them. We did lose 1 band, the staff found it, but they still wanted to charge us for it. Only after telling them to charge it to our credit card and telling them we would dispute the charge on returning to the US did they finally replace the band. They staff is really BAD!
Ocean Tours (On-Site Dive/Water Activities Shop) was AWSOME!!! Dive masters from Scuba Du are Great, boat picks up at the pier or they will taxi you to the Presidente, depending on the diver numbers. Sunset cruise was well worth the money, real margaritas and Coronas!
Our room was in the newer section. The room was large and cleaned daily. We could tell when our regular maid was off because no bottled water was left and there were only 2 towels for 4 people. They turn the A/C off for several hours during the day so your room will become humid if you don't leave the thermostat at 70.
The buffet is decent, breakfast is by far the best, lunch was ok, and the fajita bar gets old after 20 days. Dinner varied day to day. Out of a family of 10 on vacation, 8 of us got some sort of "food sickness". The "high end" restaurant was nice, food portions were on the small side and the service on the slow side, but it could have been that we had 10 people at our table.
Bar drinks were bottom shelf liquor, unless you tipped the bartender, then they would use a named brand. If you want a shot of tequila, forget it, we were told by several bartenders and the bar manager that "it's against resort policy to serve a shot alone", what BS! Would we stay here again? Never! Would we recommend the El Cozumeleno? No Way! They are better resorts closer to town or on the south end with better service.

A really great resort
By: Altimus from Raleigh NC
Date of Visit: March 2005
I must say, after reading the reviews about this resort, I was a little hesitant to disregard the negative ones and spend my vacation there.
WELL! Was I ever HAPPY that they were wrong. No one tried to push anything on me that I was not interested in. The staff was very polite, helpful and even went out of their way to make sure we had fun. The food was wonderful. Most people expect US standards when they travel. This is foolish. To those crybabies, I can only say, stay in Miami. That may well be as much latin as you can take.
No one in my party got sick. Then again, we have been coming to Mexico for nearly 10 years. This is the first time we stayed in the el coz. The drinks were cold, the food was hot and VERY tasty. The rooms were air conditioned and HUGE. The beds were firm but comfy and the room service was prompt and delightful. The only negative item on my list is that you have to get up REALLY early in the morning to get a beach chair.
People get up at 6 and start stashing their stuff on them to reserve them. No one actually uses them till aroun 9 tho. But, if you get there early enough, you should have one. They need to get some more chairs and a couple more palapas. Check-in and out was a breeze. In fact this is the first Mexican resort that has had our room ready when we got in at 2:30. I was amazed.
If you want to have fun and live like a king, go to this resort. You will not be sorry!

Even Better Second Time Around...
By: Cecilia & Marcus from Hamilton Twp, NJ
Date of Visit: May 2004
We just returned from our trip. We were at the 'el coz' from May 1 through May 8. Our first time visit to the hotel was over 9 years ago and we loved it then. Second time around, was even better. Our room was in the 'new' section of the hotel on the 5th floor (1505). The view was spectacular. We were concerned about the noise by the pools, but did not have any issues, possibly because the hotel was only at 50% capacity. The staff work so hard to make you happy. Please don't forget to tip them. The bartenders Eduardo, David, Mateos and Jorge were great. They remembered all our names from the first time we met them. The waiters, the 'grill guy' and the maids were all terrific also--I even got the 'swan' shaped towels in my bathroom and a bow made on our bedspread. The food is 'ok', mostly buffet, lot of the same stuff everyday..but if you want a 'menu'..just ask, or you can make reservations in the sit down dinner restaurant--that was good too. The place is so clean, always being kept up. We had a problem with our toilet and staff fixed it immediately. Never had a problem with anyone stealing anything. We kept our camera out and nothing was touched. The only drawback was the crazy group from Texas. They were loud, drunk and obnoxious--for 35-45 year olds, they acted worse than Cancun spring breakers. Alot of the guests complained about them and they were almost thrown out of the resort. We were all thrilled when they left. If you want to raise hell, go to Cancun, but if you want to relax, enjoy the beach, pool, great snorkeling and meet nice people, go to the 'el coz'..wish we were still there...

still ok 2nd time around!
By: Mike from Michigan from Michigan
Date of Visit: February 2003
This is our 2nd time at the El Coz and not much has changed for 2004.The food is just 'allright',but hey,who goes for the food right? The service was very good, the drinks were always flowing & the kids had a riot at the pool(this resort is very family orientated)I am normally pretty flexible but a few things rub me the wrong way this time. The first 3 days were a washout weather wise, not their fault, but they had vertually nothing to keep the people entertained, even when the sun came out the last 4 days. The second issue was having clothes stolen from our room-a pair of shorts & a tank top.The value of these items was nominal(at least to us)but the fact that someone was going through our stuff creeps me out-and yes I am 100% sure they were stolen

Would visit again!
By: John and Jean Maggioncalda from Grand Blanc, Michigan
Date of Visit: February 2003
We were very happy with the overall resort, but we were out into the older side and had several pros and cons there. Our room was in the corner of where two wings come together, which was nice for privacy. We overlooked the older pool, so we didn't have the all day craziness of the music and activities of the newer side. We did find that the room itself was not up to what we thought we would get. The drop ceilings were damaged and stained. There was NO smoke detector. The molding on the bathroom door looked like someone has kicked it in. The paint on the A/C vents in the ceiling was peeling. We figured as long as it was kept clean, we only slept there and these things were minor (except the smoke detector). We had wonderful service and the food was almost equal the 5 stars we have stayed at. We would certainly recommend this place to friends. A taxi ride to town was about $5 and it was a short trip, whereas other resorts south of town had an expensive ride into town. We didn't have too much trouble with cruise ship passengers crowding town. The shops around the piers were designed to get their business, so look farther afield to shop for bargains. El Cozumeleno is exactly what you want if you don't require fancy meals or entertainment. The overall feeling was relaxed and that's what we want during our week of vacation.

WE LOVED THE EL COZUMELENO
By: Cindy Kennedy from Watauga, TX
Date of Visit: July 2003
Our family returned from Cozumel on July 3rd and I sure wished I had booked for a longer stay at the El Cozumeleno. The staff at this resort were GREAT - always helpful, friendly. Even the other tourist - everyone was so friendly. Breakfast was awesome along with all other meals. We stayed on the old side and the rooms were really big and spacious, had just a beautiful view of the ocean and both pools. We scheduled a snorkeling tour through the 'Dive Shop' there on the property and those guys are just awesome - the really care about your safety and the prices are really good. Dive Shop Manager Antonio was just AWESOME. Snorkeling right there at the beach was something to remember. What beautiful water.........There is plenty for kids to do. I would highly recommend this resort.

Honeymoonerz
By: Tiffany from Minneapolis, MN
Date of Visit: June 2003
My husband and I were looking for a warm, relaxing, and non-party atmosphere for our honeymoon. The pool and beach were perfect for when we were lazy and the staff was so great. Their help, sense of humor, and positiveness made our stay really nice. After seeing how much fun the children were having that were at the resort, we decided it is perfect for children and we will bring our family, when we start one :)
