We were in paradise!

We are 25 and 22 and had a one year old daughter which did not come with us. Maybe it was because it was out first vacation to a Mexican resort but we absolutly loved every second of it. We borrowed a friends' time-share so we stayed in the Sabor part of the resort. We had black bracelets which was suposed to be better than the other colors, but I dont know if it made any difference. We got top shelf liquors, the drinks were yummy and strong. The staff was extremely professional and polite. We felt like king and queen in the restaurants the way they treated us. The beaches were rocky and were not barefeet-friendly in the water, but great for snorkeling! If you are planning on going to this resort, you need to definitly book a snorkeling trip that goes around the island to a couple keys spots. And also take a cab up the island to a snorkeling beach called Playa Del Corona, you can see anything you want in that water!

People get a grip

All these reviewers need to get a grip. After six trips to Reef Club here is what's good and what's not. First what is good. If you're a diver the location is excellent. Most shops will pick you up at the dock saving you more than three HOURS of travel each day. Convenience of the all-inclusive is great. Pools are good and convenient. The rooms have all been redone since Wilma and are in good shape now. I had the opportunity to sample both a hotel room and Reef Regency suite. We were offered a hotel room to change and crash in when our room was'nt ready. Food is marginal in the main retaurant but the selection is wide enough that anyone can find something to make them satified. Upscale restaurant food (Robertos and Vista del Mar) is much better but not varied. Maintenance leaves a bit to be desired (Jacuzzis haven't worked for a couple of years) but the grounds staff works tirelessly to keep the place clean and beautiful. You're in the Carribean so expect flys, ants, salamaders etc crawling about....and yes don't believe any promise made unless it's in writing and then perhaps even not. The staff is not well trained and informed so the right hand rarely knows what the left is doing. and if they run out of the booze you want offer to go to another bar and get it for them and you'll shame them into action to resolve your issue. ..and how can you hate a place where the maids leave you with towel creatures on your bed....we had an elephant, turtle and bulldog during our stay.

My kids had a blast at Reef Club!

What a relief that our experience was not at all like that of some of the other reviewers. I can only assume that our positive experience was a direct result of the negative reviews by those before us.

The front desk staff was awesome. I had several opportunities to request assistance including help to retrieve a key lost in a cab and advice on the best way to get an ear infection treated on a Sunday evening.

The activities staff were the best and really took the load off us to keep the kids busy. My kids are 13,15,& 17 and just loved them all. They had a blast on the volleyball court and in the pool acivities. If you had small kids you would have loved to see the halloween costume parade down the beach. They had incredible energy and patience.

The maids were super and the rooms were always clean. The custodial staff were cleaning the grounds constantly. Even the beach got a daily manicure with an automated beach cleaner. Recommend they balance the fan blades in the ceiling fan. It rocks! (literally)

The entertainment was fun and the staff really put their hearts into it. However I would ask them to drop the WC act on comedy night. Too much for the little kids and the grownups...

Food staff in all areas need improvement on appropriate levels of service. Commonplace were inventories of necessary items depleting. Everything was clean but the menu was mundane and redundant. If it weren't for the grill cook in the buffet and the fresh fruit we would have spent alot more time in the snack line getting burgers. Great taste there but long lines and poor service. I did appreciate the late hours kept by the snack line staff and kitchen. Their was a cat that wandered the grounds to the amusement of many even in the buffet.

Bartenders were all knowledgeable and outgoing and did a nice job with the customers.

Landscaping was wonderful north of the lobby and around the main pool. My wife rally enjoyed having an adult quiet pool.

That's all I've got...

Fix the food service and the Reef Club will be hard to beat for the price. But don't backslide once spring breakers leave!

A positive review to combat the negative reviews

So many negative reviews.....so different from our recent stay!!! Please excuse the length, but I was trying to address all the negativities!

To start my review, I thought it would be good to give you an idea of the places my wife and I have stayed previously, giving you all an idea of what we are accustomed to.

I don’t work for Hyatt, but my wife and I have found a certain fondness for the quality we find in their hotels. Most recently, my wife and I enjoyed our honeymoon at the Hyatt Regency 5 star resort in Maui (Hawaii). We have also recently enjoyed a suite in the Hyatt in San Diego, a casita suite at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa, and a very extravagant 3-room suite at the Hyatt Hill Country resort in Texas. Also worth mentioning, I have stayed at the Hyatt resorts in both the Cayman Islands and the Hyatt at St. John (although I don’t believe they own that property anymore).

I only mention this, as this is a good indication of expectations my wife and I have when visiting resorts/hotels. I believe our standards are relatively high, however after reading the terrible reviews of the Reef Club on the internet, we quickly began to prepare ourselves for Motel 6 in slums. LOL. To say the Reef Club measures to the above mentioned hotels would be crazy as well, and I do not mean to give anyone that impression!

I will say, my wife and I were thoroughly pleased with our 5 night stay at the Reef Club in Cozumel (June 20, 2004 – June 25, 2004). No, it is no Hyatt Hawaiian resort, but is no dump…not even close!

The property was very clean, the lobby very tidy, and the grounds of the hotel seemed to be well groomed (and this is after a week long rain storm just prior to our arrival that apparently caused a great deal of havoc for the hotel). The main pool was unfortunately shut down for a few days – but that was a result of major flooding from the rain storm that the Reef Club could not have prevented if they tried to.

We had a standard room, nothing fancy, and no fancy view at all – we were there for the island, not a hotel room with a view! The room was clean without a doubt, no troubles there. Our maid was very friendly, bending over backwards for us it! I’m sure everyone has read the beds are hard….most definitely they are. But….nothing I have never felt before, it was NOT a brick. But guys….this is Mexico (you may hear me say this a lot)….there is nothing but a hard bed on the island from what I understand! No alarm clock, but no big deal. AC worked incredibly – our room was flat out frigid…and this isn’t central AC! When you first get there, the room will be a little warm – they turn the AC way up when the room is not in use. The water in our room was clean and clear – still wouldn’t trust it (Mexico =>). Hot water in the shower was there with the exception of one day, but boy that shower felt good after a long day at the beach!

Speaking of the beach….FANTASTIC! Very big! PLENTY of chairs! I have read where people had issues with chairs, either we were there on a very off time (late June?), or they have acquired many more chairs! Even if you arrived on the beach at 1:00 pm, you probably won’t have any trouble getting yourself a good set of beach chairs, and you can probably find a shade tree at that! No problem!!! Water was crystal clear – but that’s without saying, this is the Caribbean. Good snorkeling off the beach – but YOU MUST get a ride on a snorkeling boat to see the REEF!!! Unbelievable, I thought I had seen a lot at Cayman, Hawaii and St. John….but I hadn’t seen anything. The hotel staff continuously walked around asking if anyone needed a drink. And there were always staff members looking to strike up a game of beach volleyball to keep the guests entertained. Just a few steps down the beach and you will find kayaks, wind surfers, and jet skis you can rent. In the other direction, a good walk down the beach is a dock where the Manta sport sailboat parks (snorkeling tours), and other fishing and scuba boats. Easy access!

The food. No question, those other resorts I mention have extreme restaurants in another league from the food you will find at the Reef Club. HOWEVER….this is not dog food! My wife and I enjoyed freshly prepared omelets made to order every single morning! The eggs were cracked in front of us, it doesn’t get any cleaner! That same restaurant does lunch and dinner also. The food on the buffet was not “to die for”, but it was certainly doable! I really can’t see it as terrible, and our experiences at hotel restaurants raises the bar pretty darn high. Did it meet the bar, no, but was it “ok”….SURE! The other two restaurants were WORLDS above this main one. Dinner only, but it’s a 5 course meal, and we both LOVED the food and smiling service!!

Flys. Yes….COZUMEL (not just Reef Club) has a bit of a fly problem. They aren’t on the beach, but in open air restaurants – all over the island, you may have to swat a bit! We found that everywhere we went. This is not a Reef club problem, although their main restaurant – being open air, does suffer from this. Again, this is Mexico, and this is a small problem Cozumel has and it is nothing that should ruin anyone’s vacation! If it does – then those individuals should stay away from any adventurous destinations!

The Staff. We found the staff to be very very nice! CONSTANTLY trying to get people to participate in numerous activities! Volleyball, water aerobics, and shows every single night we were there! Some were quite entertaining, while others were a little….eeeeehhhh. Some shows by the pool involved the guests, and got a great deal of laughter from everyone who gathered around. Front desk staff was pleasant, plenty of people to help with car reservations (on sight) as well as making reservations for any kind of activity Cozumel has to offer.

Drinks. Whats an all-inclusive stay without sampling (on numerous occasions) the beverages! Beer was great and plentiful. Mixed drinks were just as good. Always enough alcohol…there were some we thought were a little strong (and we are avid happy hour goers at home)! Any drink you can imagine, they can make!

We had no issues with time share sellers – and had no interest to sit through their presentations. Our biggest time share hassle was probably right after we got off the airplane!!! LOL

Not sure what else to say, but that we loved our stay at the Reef Club. We were expecting the worst…and that probably helped us. If you have a trip planned – READ all those negative reviews! It helped us see all the good that the Reef Club had to offer that many angry people find a way to leave out of their reviews. Its by no means in the same league as the other hotels I mentioned up top – and that’s not their goal anyway, but it was certainly a very pleasant and enjoyable stay – spent mostly right there on their property!

THANK YOU REEF CLUB!

Unbiased experienced diver's review.

The diving was great!. The dive staff was very helpful, and professional. The staff at the resort were also very pleasant, and helpful. The entertainers in the evenings in the theater were very talented. Fun shows most nights. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the facility as a whole was very clean, and pleasant also.

The things I did care for: I think it would have been a much more pleasant atmosphere around the resort if they'd have had some recorded soft steel drum music playing around the main pool area. There was almost no music until the evenings. The food was good, but not very good. There was not much in the way of change in the menu as the days past. Definitely needed more variety in food. Got very boring about the 3rd day. The grass roof on the oceanside top room we were in leaked when it rained. Water dropped onto my face as I was sleeping. Since I like a good story to take home, it didn't bother me that much. Just a hole in the grass is all, but worth mentioning.

Would I go back to Reef Club Cozumel again? Yes, but I would definitely count on eating in town alot more often, and I would check out the roof in my room before accepting it.

All in all from 1-10 (ten being best) I'd rate this resort a 7. Well, 6 1/2 really.

I have been to the Reef Club 4 times in the last 3 years. I have watched it go down hill. This trip has been the worst yet. The food was less then desirable and the customer service was pathetic. My family was treated with a complete lack of respect. I have received better service at a motel 6. It is with regret that I will no longer recommend this resort!!! Nor will I ever return to it.

well I'm sorry to say I agree with all the unhappy visitors to the Reef Club. How the heck this place has a 4 star rating is behond me? I have to say that the food is absolutely TERRIBLE!! My husband and I aren't snobs by any means, and the food at every meal was HORRIBLE! The drinks were just as bad. How the heck can you mess up a drink?..I don't know!..but they do. The rooms were really run down, the bed was literally as hard as the floor, the fan was about to fall from the ceiling. which made us laugh-but wasn't funny. the air conditioning didn't work as well as it should have-oh, and our friends were in the room upstairs and I swear each time they were out on their balcony I thought it was going to fall down. ha ha, It makes me laugh as I type this; but it really isn't a place I will ever return to, or reccomend to anyone. Although, the hotel it's self is pretty crappy all of the employess there were all very nice to us. We will definetly return to Cozumel in the future, it is a beautiful place with awesome snorkeling and diving, but next time we will be looking in to another resort.

It has been a couple of months since we have returned from our vacation, but I just now got irritated enough to send out a review about the hotel. My point being that on the last day I went into the gift shop to buy last minute souviniers and left my glasses on the counter. I did not realize this until we were at the airport(which is 20 minutes away)and getting ready to board our flight. When we returned home I called the hotel and talked to a lady and she said that yes they had found my glasses and not to worry, I was going to get them back. Ok, I guess that is just like saying the check is in the mail. After countless phone calls, emails and almost 3 months, still no glasses. I know it was my irresponsibility that got me into this mess but they did not have to lie to me and asure me that I will get my glasses back. I guess I better bite the bullet and just go by some other glasses. I suppose that just topped off the vacation that was not very good to begin with. The bar was constantly running out of the liquor for the drinks we wanted (we brought a group of 14)and I always thought Kahlua was made in Mexico. One night I was left with no towels or toilet paper in my room, I called the front desk to bring more. Ok, so maybe they had a rush, so I called again. I figured a third phone call would do me as well as the second, so I headed to the front desk myself. Thank goodness I finally got some toilet paper, because can you think of a night in Mexico withour it!(Ughhhhh) We found one worker there who was excellent (and our group showed our appreciation by the tips) but unfortunatly the restaurant manager said he could not spend so much time on us and the poor guy had to stop waiting on us. We found that most of the workers were snotty and not very helpful. I would suggest another hotel or even going to a different place, Playa del Carmen is nice and Cancun is wonderful. So many people have different experiences and I have read some reviews that love the place, but unfortunatly I cannot say that it was that great. If you go, I wish you luck!

This trip was Feb Of 2004 Date of stay would only go to 2003

Paid to have a large group (over 20) to stay at the reef club. This place is terrible. Most of our guests had to go to the front desk just to get toilet paper.......this after tipping each maid $2 to $5 per day. Many people from our group left the Reef Club to go to a bar down on the beach and were willing to spend their own money just to get a drink with some booze in it. By the way wine is not included in this 'All Inclusive Resort' when you are in the resturants......What?? $22 a bottle what a joke! The staff at the resort likes to act like they dont speak english however when pressed they all speak it very well. They just dont want to help. I ended up having a discussion with the CEO on the property. He was very nice but very out of touch with the problems that currently exist at his resort! If I step foot on this property during the rest of my life it will be too soon!

Reef Club Nightmare

The following are details about what happened on our stay at Reef Club Cozumel from 1-17-04 to 1-24-04.
My wife and I took the trip booked thru funjet vacations. We traveled with my brother in law and his Wife and their 2 children. These are our experiences at this resort. We spoke with several other guests and have collected a few e mail addresses and plan on taking action against the Resort at the corporate level. We will also provide this information to Apple Vacations and Funjet. Hopefully this will help others to make an educated decision on where to NOT stay in Cozumel.

We arrived and asked for 2 rooms that were next to each other. This could not be done. Then we asked for rooms that were at least close together. We were told that this also could not be done. When we arrived the hotel was 40% booked so I can't see why this was impossible. The staff at the resort has a general 'I don't care' attitude. There were no salt or pepper shakers available anywhere in one of the restaurants, we were told that we would have to go across to the other restaurant and get salt if we wanted it.
There were never enough chairs in the beach grill area to sit down. We had to take chairs from the restaurant across the resort if we wanted to sit down. When we asked a staff member for chairs, he said 'one minute' and that was the last we saw of him. This was the norm throughout the entire trip. Staff members were asked for essential items and told us that they would take care of it and never returned.
No cream for the coffee, there was never any creamer available for the coffee. Also no spoons were to be found anywhere at the resort. When you asked for one you were told, 'sorry senior, we no have'. We stopped tipping the staff after the third day because tipping didn't provide better service. So what's the point? We bought 150.00 in singles for tipping and came back with most of it.
My wife saw a staff member that was picking up trash trying to kill a kitten by slitting it's throat with a sharp piece of glass. A woman saw this and started beating the man with her shopping bag. He laughed and finally stopped. This was reported to the staff manager and we were told that the matter would be taken care of. 2 hours later the same man was still working, cleaning up the grounds. No pop is available in the morning anywhere at the resort. If you ask a staff member, they TELL you they will get you some, but never return.
We made reservations at the Italian Restaurant for 6 people. When we went in for dinner, we were seated inside. I asked for an ash tray and was told that the inside was no smoking. We were never asked when we made the reservations about smoking or non smoking and it isn't posted anywhere. We told the Head waiter and he told me that it was not his problem and that I should contact guest relations.

In general, the staff doesn't care, the food is lukewarm at best, the pools are cold (75*). All of this was discussed with management . Hope you don't pick this resort.

Pete

We just returned from our 11th trip from Cozumel and are so glad it was our 11th for had it been our first trip with the experience we had at the Reef Club it may have been our last. We took advantage of an Apple Square deal that put us at the Reef Club, we cringed when we heard where we were staying for we had heard a number of bad reviews. First we are wondering how did you get a 4 apple rating? The service at the bar was the worst we have ever seen, the bartenders literally stood with their backs toward the bar or they were eating behind the fruit drink machine or too busy visiting with each other. We had to ask for each and every drink or even glass to put it in and felt like we were bothering them. My husband went to the buffet in the morning to get me coffee and some juice for himself, did not have shoes on and was asked not to return without them. Dress code we understand, but when should this be such an issue when cats are roaming freely in and all about the restaurant??? The water in our room was of a dark yellow color, the toilet stained, no kleenix and half a roll of tissue. We literally let the shower run for 15mins before we had even luke warm water. Speaking of water we have never stayed anywhere there when bottled wasn't in the room, this was an all inclusive package but guess water wasn't on the list. Then of course there is the room, no hair dryer???????? Stained bedspread????? filthy fan?????? and then our Apple Rep let us know at the end of our stay we were supposed to have gotten a king size bed??????? The check in desk made us feel like we were putting them out by even entering the lobby. Let's see the spider bites are healing but they were more tolerable than the food poisoning I got which put me in bed for one whole day, missed a day of diving that was paid for, but then again it was a pretty perfect way to end a perfectly horrid stay at your resort. We plan on letting our travel agent know, in fact all ready have not to reccomend this property to anyone, we told as many people we could at the airport in Cozumel about the Reef Club and there is a Cozumel forem on the net that alot of people visit to get the worst and the best about Cozumel. We are in love with Cozumel, visit there as often as we can, never have we been treated so poorly, never have we been sick and never would we return to Reef Club. I would sincerely hope this review is in fact reviewed, we would love to hear from someone if any one there had that much curtesy.

Our family stayed as in the newer villas section for club members. The rooms were new and beautiful! The pool for club members was clean, big and awesome. Wine and fruit awaited us, and every day the towel service was custom folded into different animals (from swans to iguanas). The food was plentiful and fine. The hamburgers at the outside grill were the best!
Nightly entertainment was just OK ... the best night was the mexican folklorico dance troup. Not much for the teens to do, but our teenager made new friends and we felt entirely safe leaving him for much of the day and evening to 'hang' with his new friends. The scuba diving school/staff were awesome! Free introductory lessons every day at 10:00 am, and if you are ready to really do it, great instructors make it easy and safe. Never thought we'd scuba, but did it in one day and it was the experience of a lifetime! Snorkeling in front of the hotel was pleasurable, as was the free sea kayaking! Massage/spa was very enjoyable too. Highly recommend for families!

[A bad trip ... then a good trip]

My wife and I went to the Reef Club ,Cozumel in June of 2002. We were looking foward to all the extras we were to experience upon our arrival such as wine, fruit,a stocked bar, jacuzzi and passes for a sunset cruise, priority seating at the specialty restaurant, cocierge service.(We purchased our vacation package from Fun-Jet), all of this was written in the package we paid for......we got none of it, just the run around and alot of sarcasim and rudeness.

We were taken through a contruction zone,a muddy mess and piles of buiding scrap all around to our junior suite,an upgrade from their other rooms. The pool that it said was for us to 'enjoy' on our package was undone. The bar with 'premium drinks' was NOT open. Workers were chipping concrete for hours. Hammering and electric saws. Green rotten water in the jacuzzi. I couldn't stand near it, it was really foul smelling. I let it run for hours and it turned brown. We 'downgraded' ourselves and got a tiny room in it's place.

The suite we booked was large with a large bathroom and a sitting area in the dining room. It had a kitchen, micro, fridge etc. It was really a beautiful room. It's just that it was situated in the middle of hell. So we spent the rest of our vacation in a Motel 6 size room, possibly even smaller.

When we got back my wife went to the travel agent and told them that our vacation was a disaster, Many more problems arose with not receiving what we were told on paper what we would receive during our stay. Initially the people at the travel agency seemed appalled at we had endured. We showed them pictures of the area, the jacuzzi etc. They told my wife 'we sell vacations not that' pointing to one of the photos presented to her. They assured us that they 'would make it right'.

They showed us what we were to experience, all we were to receive on our more expensive upgrade. They have brochures of tranquility of real Carribean natural beauty. What we got was stress and the 'run around' for months to come.

The Reef Club was contacted and their response to our vacation there was something like this,'We are very sorry etc.. Please allow us to offer you another stay equaling the time spent with us etc..'offer expires in one year. Now that is how you treat someone that completly screwed you around for so much planning, work, time and most of all $$$. To this Day FunJet said that the experience we had on the vacation package that we purchased from Fun Jet is not their or the travel agents fault.

We just returned from the Reef Club earlier this month. We had no choice but to purchase our tickets and our 2 children's also.I'm in debt now but what a lifetime of memories I'll have. I should have received it last year.

It was heaven. The construction was completed, the bar was open, the pool was great, the whole place looked better. Sidewalks were no longer wooden planks but a nice bright concrete. I saw improvements all over. I didn't know what to expect before this trip. The last time , I was so ticked off that I was ready to turn around for home.

Reef Club------Thank You for knowing when a customer has been wronged and for your offer to 'fix' the situation . It couldn't have been any better(except for the food) Fun Jet lied to us before and again after our return. The way that they conduct business/themselves, it should be illegal! Nothing 'fun' about it !

I have travelled on my own to Cozumel numerous times with dive groups. I am a scuba instructor and take groups to CZM frequently and usually stay at Fiesta Inn aka Costa Club now called the Brisas. I have stayed at the El Presidente too considered to be the best hotel in the island. Just got back from Cozumel last week (June 9'03) with my entire family and stayed at the Reef Club. My family and I had a blast. We had so much of a good time and enjoyed the resort that we joined the Reef Regency Vacation Club. It's great for couples and for families. The entertainment crew tried did a good job in engaging and entertaining the resort guest. Food was decent and had variety and themes. They could increase the number of wait staff to truly serve the guest prompltly. The beach was great, one of the few in Cozumel, although the beach chairs were broken, probably from guest who overate the buffet and broke the chairs (grin) but seriuosly, the management need to pay attention to these small details. Overall good value for your money, very good service, and great variety of atmosphere.

The Reef Club - Quick Review

The Reef Club was not what it appears, the rooms are much nicer go for the studio or suite if avail, you will enjoy a private pool. Otherwise you have to get up at 7am to get space on their small beach due to lack of chairs, previous guests told us the beach was bigger around May.

The food on the other hand leaves something to be desired, don't eat the fish, full of bones. Most of the amenities are for the time-share people, they get the best treatment.

All in all it was a nice, relaxing place; entertainment was mostly for children. The food was rated a 1. Take your choice food or relaxation. The rooms shown online are terrible looking, must be an older picture even regular hotel rooms appeared to be much nicer (in person).
