This trip begins early on the morning of April 9th. We had been looking forward to this since we had returned from a week in PDC over New Years. But during the intervening months, we had moved; and the week prior to this latest journey to Cancun, I had traveled to D.C. to bury my brother-in-law, who passed suddenly and without warning. The anxiety over those two events made this trip all the more anticipated and welcome.
Moving – I don’t wish it on my worst enemy. Not only did we move from a home we inhabited (and collected lots of stuff in) for over 15 years, but we moved from a home with lots of storage room, and a generous amount of property, to a condo with limited storage room, and of course no property to maintain. So we were left with the massive task of sorting and discarding and packing and unpacking and schlepping and god knows what else with all the stuff collected over a lifetime. And ridding ourselves of a rather respectable collection of lawn and garden tools and equipment, and all the accouterments of the pool and yard. Suffice to say we were really looking forward to vacation.

We started going to Cancun in 1999, and this trip would make an even dozen times we’ve vacationed in the Yucatan. We always stay at a Palace property, and usually the Beach Palace. We no longer bring the kids along with us, because, well….they’re not kids any more.

Back to early in the morning of the 9th. The limo arrives as I’m posting (and boasting) my Thursday morning countdown as being down to ten minutes. Ralph, our regular driver, was a little bit early as usual. Pleasant weather and a smooth ride to O’Hare. 4AM is about the only hour of the day that traffic to O’Hare is moderate. Check in with USA3000, bags make the weight limit, exit row seating is available, cleared through security with only the usual hassle…..what could be better? We get boarded, take off on time and have an uneventful flight. Land a little early, get through immigration, bags arrive and we fly through customs. This is just so easy. Find the Apple guys in their dated, flowered shirts, and get in the van to the BP. New aquariums greeted us in the lobby.

We’re welcomed warmly, but our room isn’t made up yet. That took a couple of hours, but we spent the time reacquainting ourselves with the bartenders. We ran into a few we have known for all eleven years we’ve been vacationing with Palace. When our room was ready, it was the specific room I had requested. The Beach Palace is elliptical in construction, and the way it works out, the rooms in the middle of each floor have the largest balconies, so I had asked for the room by number…and got it.

On one hand, I took it in stride because of our experience with the exceptional service we’ve grown accustomed to with Palace; but on the other hand, I was a little surprised that I could request and get a room by number. As it turned out, occupancy was fairly low – less than 50%, so it didn’t seem like that big of a stretch. The low occupancy did kind of surprise us, as typically during Easter week, occupancy percentage is in the high 80s to low 90s. Throughout the zone, it was in the 70s. It looks like the economy is having an impact on travel. We met more people from England than usual, which I think would be because of the relative strength of the pound and Euro against the dollar. The peso has backed off to about 12.5 per USD.

The relative sparseness of guests manifested itself in some positive ways…there was never a wait at any restaurant, and you could have your pick of tables. There was always room at the bar, and there was none of the “towel wars” we’ve seen sometimes in the past. I’m an early riser, and as such, I got down to the pool a little after six each morning, to enjoy the sunrise and spend a couple of hours reading.

It was pretty much me and the pool maintenance guys, and the jovial older gentleman who watered the landscaping each morning. On our last day, I counted 4 people at the pool at 8:30 AM.

The Beach Palace is currently a misnomer. It should be rechristened the “Seawall Palace”. There is no beach – none.

While we were there, the winds were fairly strong, and we saw nothing but red flags. The ramps down to the beach were chained off, so there was no access to the non-existent beach. The lack of beach was in both directions, the Melia ME, adjacent to the south and the Avalon to the north were also without beach. Hopefully the beach reconstruction project gets done soon – and successfully.

While having no beach to walk on was disappointing, it did not deter us from our fiercely rigorous schedule of eating good food, partaking of adult beverages, napping and reading; interrupted only for an occasional dip in the pool.

We did manage to leave the grounds a couple of times for the required shopping expedition. Flamingo Mall is all but dead, the rest of the usual shopping destinations were all seemingly thriving. We did take the Kitchen Tour at BP, and learned some very interesting facts.

We were quite impressed with the cleanliness and the sanitation procedures. We were also quite surprised at the size of the kitchens, which we thought were quite small for having to support three restaurants.
We learned that Palace has schools to teach employees languages and other educational opportunities. We were told that Palace operates the largest laundry in Latin America. Some very interesting stuff.

The weather was beautiful…in the upper 80s everyday, and plunging down into the 70s overnight. As I had mentioned, it was on the windy side…even for Cancun at this time of year. We were told that the week before our arrival had been much worse. We saw not a drop of rain…and I guess we’ve been fortunate in that respect. Twelve trips to Cancun and PDC and we’ve only had one morning of rain of any significance, and a brief (five minutes) sprinkle another time or two.

The accommodations, food and service at the Beach Palace were up to the usual standards. For dinner the first night, I had the lamb chops; and they were so good that I ordered them again a few nights later. The second time around wasn’t nearly as good as the first time. They were prepared fine….the chops themselves were not up to par. That was the only negative thing we had to say about any of the food at the BP. We went to the Sun Palace for dinner one evening, and were quite surprised at the poor service we received there….very sub-standard for a Palace property. And my steak – ordered medium – came back raw…singed on the outside but cold and red inside. Of course they were apologetic, and corrected it, but the whole experience is uncommon from the norm for Palace.

That being said, there’s nothing that will prevent us from planning our next vacation at the Beach Palace. After all these years, we are giving thought to becoming members. In years past, it just wasn’t an investment that we could justify. That, and an aversion to the “sales pitch” we would have to endure. Now that I’m semi-retired, it’s starting to make sense to “pre-pay” for future vacations – so to speak. And it would make it easier to go more than once a year. Having gone in January this year, and again in April, we got a little spoiled…..and we found that we like that.

On the ninth day…it was time to leave. After breakfast, we said our good-byes, got packed up and checked out. Transportation to the airport was just a little bit late and surprisingly enough – check-in at the airport only took a few minutes. The flight was close enough to on time to not be an issue. The flight itself was uneventful, although fairly rough. The young woman next to me was apparently not an experienced flier, and was pretty fidgety throughout the trip. Immigration at O’Hare was very crowded, and took longer than usual to get through. The bags arrived in a timely manner and our driver was waiting for us by the time we got outside. All in all, another wonderful vacation, but it was still nice to be home.
