Beautiful but DisappointingPreview
By: Anonymous from Philadelphia, PA
Date of Visit: January 2003
We visited Kanantik in January 2003. It had been ranked as a top eco resort by Outside magazine and we decided to follow this recommendation but it seems there are some bugs to work out. The resort is gorgeous. The staff is attentive and warm. There are also many good activities in the area. We felt very jilted by the owner, as he made a habit of fawning over the older, richer looking families at dinner, making his rounds from table to table while systematically ignoring us and another young couple. The cabanas are beautiful. But let me tell you something - things LIVE in thatched roofs. More than once, scorpions fell onto our floor from the roof. When we called the desk to ask someone to help us get the scorpions out of our dressing area, Roberto actually laughed at us. The cabanas are open to the outside (although there is a/c). The first night a tarantula 7 inches across (no kidding) was on our wall. We left it alone and it left us alone. Spiders like that were common in our room during the week. My fiance and I are backpackers and generally comfortable in the outdoors. Yet, being in a strange country in the jungle with an open-aired cabana that is being inhabited by scorpions and tarantulas is NOT our idea of a luxury, 5-star resort. Just like in Arizona where scorpions and spiders live, these rooms could have benefitted from proper ceilings. Finally, our snorkeling trip was incredibly disappointing. We arrived onto the boat with nary a hello. Not once did we receive any instruction, or any education on coral or fish. We weren't even told to not touch the coral or which is fire coral. On the way back to the shore, the drivers of the boat spent their time drinking beer and flirting with the owner's daughter. And as for the beach...the first night we arrived we went walking and almost stepped on 4 syringes and needles. After that, although we lounged on the beach, we NEVER went swimming in the ocean and never saw any other guests do so either.

Kanatik March 2004
By: Anonymous from San Francisco
Date of Visit: March 2003
A beautiful, exquisitely designed, resort which manages to offer luxury accomodations in a remote, unspoiled, natural setting. Excellent service from friendly staff and superb equipment (boats, scuba gear, snorkel gear). All tours and food was included in price. The food was hit and miss though great effort was made to create imaginative local and mediteranean cuisine. Bring 'Jungle Juice' or 'Ultrathon' to protect your skin from ' no-see-ums'. Definitely worth seeing once.
