Perfect Resort

If you like the big, glitzy, Sandals type resorts which are like little Americas, then Hamanasi is not for you. If you like small, local, quiet, intimate places, then you can't go wrong with Hamanasi. We had the most fantastic time. We went primarily to dive, and the diving with these guys was top tier. They took care of all the equipment, had very knowledgeable dive masters, and captains that knew every tiny island and reef. The food was great, the rooms impeccable (we stayed in a tree house and loved it) and the service was the best I have ever receieved anywhere in the world. Everyone knew our names and we felt like we were visiting family. We spent a magical week, happily cut off from the world, diving, exploring Mayan Ruins, horseback riding... It was hard to come home. Belize is fantastic, but it was our stay at Hamanasi that made sure we would be back!

Well run Resort
By: Michael Girman from New York, NY
Date of Visit: December 2004
My wife and I spent 6 days at Jungle Reef Lodge in December, '04 for a honeymoon and diving. Since JRL doesn't have an inhouse dive staff, we arranged to do all our diving at the Hamanasi resort which is next door to JRL. We blew it. We should have stayed at Hamanasi.
We choose JRL on the basis of their website photos. The pictures were better than the reality. The rooms were nice but, except for the two on either end, were too far from the beach and sort of behind the main lodge/dining room. You couldn't hear the surf from the rooms, only the air conditioners in the adjoining rooms. The lodge building blocked most, if not all, of the sea breeze. The pictures of Hamanasi, on the other hand, didn't do it justice. The resort was much prettier than its pictures. The rooms were also much closer to the beach and in front of the lodge. Hamanasi was also beautifully landscaped and filled with hummingbirds. JRL was clean and well raked but bare by comparison.
As far as the staff goes, there was no comparison. Hamanasi's staff was superb. JRL's was mediocre at best. Since we did all our diving from Hamanasi, we were there every morning to get on the dive boat. The manager there, Karen, would greet both my wife and I by name. She went diving with us one afternoon. She joined us for breakfast. She personally saw to our comfort and the details of our dives. The rest of the staff treated us like guests, not like visitors from another resort. We took a JRL boat snorkeling one afternoon to Coco Plum Caye. The captain took us to the island, pointed to a buoy floating offshore and said “Go snorkel over there.” He then went to the bar and chatted with a waitress. We took a double sea kayak out to the site. It sucked. We could have seen as much in the resort's pool. Because of heavy surf, we couldn't get back into the kayak. If some of the other guests wouldn't have sent the captain back out to help, we'd still be out there struggling.
We never spoke to the management of JRL. We could see them sitting inside through a glass window in their office door, but they never came out of the airconditioning to introduce themselves, say hi or ask if there was anything they could do. JRL’s wait staff needs a lot of work. One afternoon for lunch, they just stood in the back and only came forward to serve us reluctantly.
As far as the food went, again Hamanasi also was, far and away, superior. More variety, bigger portions, better preparation, presentation and service. JRL’s was adequate but much less than we expected. It was what you’d expect from a chain restaurant in an airport. We took a JRL box lunch snorkelling one day and it consisted of a plastic box with chicken salad, some vegetable salad, and a cookie. Hamanasi’s picnic lunch was grilled chicken breasts, lunchmeat with cheese, bread and condiments for sandwiches, bow tie pasta, fresh cut watermelon, fresh cut pineapple and brownies and cookies. The captain and the dive crew set up a table and did the serving.
Hamanasi – first class, JRL – low class.

Great Place to Escape
By: K. Stasko from York, Maine
Date of Visit: November 2003
I stayed there on a recommendation of a friend who used to live in Belize. Arrived after a long ride on a bumpy dirt road. I had a reservation for the least expensive room - beach front rooms. We arrived and the staff was just wonderful. The big surprize was when I entered the room. I was one of the most beautiful and cleanest rooms I have ever stayed it. It was supplied with everything I could need down to air freshner and bug spray. The only things missing was a phone and a T.V.. They feel that this is a place to escape and relax and they are right. I only had time to go on one excursion, to South Water Cay but that was wonderful. They offer a breakfast of homemade breads and rolls with tropical fruits. The juice is freshly squeezed from fruits picked the day before. The breakfast in included in the price of the room. There is also a casual resturant with very good food and the service is prompt unlike many others in the area. I highly recommend this resort for anyone who wants to escape from it all!!

Great Resort BUT BEWARE OF THIEVES
By: Gene and Kathy Ford from Provo, Utah
Date of Visit: November 2003
Most everything about this resort was exceptional. However, the morning we checked out we gave all our luggage to the support staff who said they were supposed to load them in the van for the trip to the Dangriga airport. My husband's $600 Suunto Stinger dive computer/watch was in a plastic bag in my hand carry bag. From the time we gave the bags to them and the time it took to unload them at the airport, the dive computer bag was ripped open and the dive computer stolen! If you go to this resort I would suggest handling your own luggage and not letting it out of sight! Keep anything of any value at home or on your person at all times. We didn't stay with the bags when we gave them to the support staff as we were paying the bill and so forth. This certainly put a damper on what was a really grand nine days at this resort. For this reason, we will never go back there and certainly wouldn't recommend it to any of our dive friends. It's a shame.....to say the least. Also, the vehicles are in need of maintenance. On one excursion the van blew an engine and we were stranded until the owner of another resort came by and gave us a ride back to the resort, while the young tour guide stayed with the broken vehicle. This resort is fairly new and seems to have some bugs to work out, sort to speak, and I do hope they will investigate our stolen computer and find the thieves and maybe the computer.
