I'm glad that my first choice was booked

Date of Visit: January 2003
My wife and I, and another couple, just got back from a Jan. 23 (2004) trip to Ambergris Caye. We initially wanted to stay at Banyan Bay, because we read it had the nicest, largest, condos on the island, but it was booked. We looked around at a few places and, based on Lan Sluder's travel reviews, booked with Ken Krohn at Belizean Reef Suites. It's a great small condotel, managed by Kenneth Krohn, a very friendly American expat who was only too eager to tell us anything about Belize and Ambergris Caye that we wanted to ask him.
We stayed in a second-level 2br 2ba condo, oceanfront, for a good price. We were right outside of town, so everything was within walking distance--we didn't even need to rent a golf cart. Everything in the unit was in working order, and we had great seaviews every morning. Only the bedrooms were air-conditioned, but it's really true that the sea breezes keep you cool. When I go back to A.C., I'll most likely stay here again. I was a little nervous b/c their ad touted their rooftop view--which made me believe they might not have much of a beach. Actually, they had a nice beachfront, though no pier in front (we used the neighbor's).
The only downside to the property is the same as its upside--location. Because it's at the edge of town, there's a lot of pedestrian traffic. Our first night, we tried to sleep with the windows open but couldn't b/c of nearby (American) partiers drinking the night away. However, once we closed the windows and turned on the A/C, everything was fine. I've read reviews of the place where someone said its proximity to the airport made it hard for them to sleep b/c of planes. I didn't find this to be a problem at all.
I'd give, perhaps, a few tips: 1. Try to get a condo off ground level. The views are better, and you don't have to worry about thieving (an occasional problem on Ambergris Caye, I'm told).
2. The property itself is small--if you're looking for a pool, in-house restaurant, and other family-friendly amenities, you'll be disappointed. We walked by Banana Beach Resort (where we considered staying), and saw rows of people lying out on the beach (well, at least a dozen, which is a lot for belize) and kids. We personally prefered the more quiet atmosphere.
3. Their site says to get the taxi driver to take you to their resort and they'll pay. Unless you've got a lot of luggage, don't embarass yourself like we did by ordering a taxi. It's about a block away--just ask for directions. Our taxi driver laughed at us.
